Out on a farm shop in northern Missouri, restoration and metal work puts a lift through a different kind of abuse than a typical repair bay, and the rotary air cylinder on a used two-post you’re eyeing at auction or off a classified ad is one of the easiest things to overlook until it’s already failing in your shop. We’ve fielded plenty of calls from farm shop owners who bought a used Rotary lift sight-unseen, hauled it home, and then called us asking why the arms won’t release. Step One: Get the Serial Number Before You Get the Cash Out

Every checklist for buying a used lift starts here, and it’s the step people skip most often because they’re excited about the deal. Before you hand over any money for a lift with a rotary air cylinder you haven’t inspected, get the full serial number off the column data plate and send it to a shop that knows Rotary equipment. We recently helped a shop with an older Rotary two-post that needed a cylinder rebuild, and having that serial number up front let us confirm exactly which cylinder specification it used before the buyer committed to hauling it home.

Model numbers matter because Rotary has changed cylinder specs and port configurations across different production years. A cylinder that looks physically similar to what you need might have a different port size, different end mounting dimensions, or a different counterbalance valve behind it, and none of that is obvious just by looking at the outside of the unit. Get the number, call it in, and get written confirmation of what parts are actually available for that specific serial before you finalize any purchase.

Step Two: Inspect the Cylinder Body for Scoring and Corrosion

Once you’ve confirmed the model, physically inspect the rotary air cylinder itself if you can get eyes on the lift in person. Look at the exposed portion of the rod for scoring, pitting, or rust — farm shops especially tend to store equipment in buildings with humidity swings, and that moisture works its way into cylinders that sit unused for stretches between owners. Surface rust on a rod is often salvageable with a reseal, but deep pitting means the seals will never hold long-term no matter how good the rebuild kit is.

Check the endcaps and mounting points too. On Rotary equipment, end mounting specs are precise — diameters and widths are machined to close tolerances so the cylinder pins correctly into the arm assembly. If a previous owner welded a repair onto a mounting ear or swapped in a non-original part, that’s a red flag worth walking away from, because it usually means the cylinder was already failing and got a workshop fix instead of a proper rebuild.

Step Three: Ask About Counterbalance Valve Compatibility

Many rotary air cylinder setups on Rotary equipment work alongside a counterbalance valve that controls extension and retraction smoothly rather than letting the arm drop or swing uncontrolled. If you’re restoring an older unit, confirm the counterbalance valve spec matches what the cylinder actually needs — mismatched valves cause jerky arm movement or lock engagement that doesn’t feel right, and that’s dangerous on equipment you’re about to trust with a vehicle overhead.

This is a detail a lot of private sellers can’t answer, because most people who used the lift for years never had to think about it until something broke. If the seller doesn’t know, that’s not necessarily a dealbreaker, but it does mean you should budget for a full inspection and potential valve replacement as part of your restoration project cost, not as a surprise after you’ve already reassembled everything else.

Step Four: Compare Port Sizes and Line Routing

Port size matters more than people expect. Many Rotary cylinder designs use matched port sizes on both the extend and retract sides, often located at the piston endcap with a feeder tube running to the rod end so a hose doesn’t need to be routed the long way around. If you’re restoring a unit and planning to source a replacement rotary air cylinder rather than rebuild the original, mismatched port sizing means you’ll also need to redo hose fittings and possibly the external line routing, which adds cost and time you didn’t plan for.

Before buying any replacement part, get the exact port specification confirmed against your lift’s actual configuration, not just the general model family. Step Five: Factor In Rebuild Kit Availability, Not Just the Cylinder Price

A used lift with a tired rotary air cylinder isn’t automatically a bad buy — sometimes it’s the best deal on the lot, because a rebuild kit costs a fraction of a full replacement cylinder. But before you agree on price, confirm that a rebuild kit is actually available for that specific unit. Older or less common configurations sometimes require custom seal sourcing, and on units that were custom-built or modified by a previous owner, off-the-shelf kits may not fit at all.

We’ve rebuilt cylinders where the original was a custom-built unit with nonstandard dimensions, and while it’s absolutely doable, it takes longer and costs more than a standard rebuild. Know which situation you’re in before you negotiate a price, because that difference should be reflected in what you’re willing to pay for the lift.

Step Six: Test the Lock Function Before You Load It on the Trailer

If at all possible, see the lift run before you buy it — even a five-minute demonstration tells you a lot. Cycle the arms, listen for hissing or delayed release, and watch whether the lock engages solidly or feels soft. A rotary air cylinder that’s failing often shows subtle symptoms before it fails completely: slow release, incomplete lock, or a hiss you can hear if the shop is quiet enough.

For restoration and metal work specifically, where you’ll be swinging arms constantly to access panels and frame sections, a marginal cylinder will become a daily annoyance fast. It’s worth the extra hour to see it run rather than assuming a static inspection tells you everything. If the seller can’t or won’t demonstrate it, factor a rebuild into your offer regardless of what they claim about its condition.

Step Seven: Plan Your Parts Source Before Move-In Day

Farm shops in northern Missouri are often a long haul from a dedicated lift parts distributor, so the last item on this checklist is simple: know where you’re getting parts before the lift is bolted to your floor.
