Step One: Is the Housing Still Sound?

Before you even think about used versus new, the first branch in the decision tree is whether the existing cylinder housing is salvageable. If the bore is scored, pitted, or out-of-round, no seal kit is going to fix it, and you’re looking at replacement rather than rebuild. We’ve pulled cylinders out of restoration shop lifts that were twenty years old with housings still in great shape — the wear was entirely in the seals and rod, which is a straightforward and inexpensive rebuild.

If the housing checks out, a rebuild is almost always the cheapest path forward, and it’s the branch most Ames shop owners end up on. If your shop depends on the lift daily for oil changes and fluid service on customer vehicles — work that generates steady revenue rather than sitting on a restoration project indefinitely — the downtime risk of a used part failing early usually outweighs the savings. We generally steer daily-use shops toward new or professionally rebuilt units, and reserve used cylinders for shops with a second lift as backup or slack in their schedule to handle a failure.

Step Three: Match the Configuration Exactly

This is where restoration shop owners get tripped up most often. A rotary air cylinder isn’t a universal part — end mounting diameters, port locations, counterbalance valve specs, and feeder line routing all vary by lift model and sometimes by production year. We’ve seen shops buy a used cylinder that looked right but had a different rod-end width or port placement, which meant it either didn’t fit or required custom-fabricated brackets to install.

Before buying used or new, pull your lift’s serial number and cross-reference the original spec sheet: bore diameter, stroke length, port size, and mounting width. If you’re not sure where to find that information, we can usually identify it from photos of the existing cylinder and a serial number, even on older Rotary equipment that’s changed hands a few times. Getting this step wrong is the single most common reason a cylinder swap turns into a multi-week delay instead of a weekend job.

Step Four: How Much Downtime Can Your Shop Absorb?

Restoration work has more schedule flexibility than a quick-lube bay, but even a custom build has deadlines — a customer picking up their car for a show, a trade-in deal that’s time-sensitive. If your shop can tolerate a week or two of downtime, ordering the correct new or rebuilt rotary air cylinder and waiting for the right part is almost always the better call than rushing into a used purchase that might not fit.

If you genuinely can’t afford any downtime — say your lift is the only one in the shop and you’ve got three cars mid-project sitting on it — a used cylinder that’s a confirmed match and can be installed same-day might be worth the tradeoff, even with the added risk. Step Six: When to Just Call Us Instead of Guessing
