What a Rotary Air Cylinder Actually Does in a Two-Post Setup

On most rotary two-post lifts, the hydraulic cylinder does the heavy lifting, but a rotary air cylinder — or the counterbalance/air-assist circuitry paired with it — controls how smoothly the carriage rises and how the arms lock and release. In a dealership bay running CV axle and half-shaft jobs all day, that smoothness matters. A tech working under a raised vehicle needs the platform to settle predictably, not chatter or drift while they’re wrestling a half-shaft out of a hub. We’ve seen counterbalance valves like the Sun CBCALHN spec’d specifically to control extension speed so the cylinder doesn’t slam or hesitate under partial load, which is common with axle work since the vehicle’s weight distribution changes as components come off.

The cylinder itself typically has SAE #6 ports at the piston end cap, with a feeder tube running to the rod end so a second hose isn’t needed just to service that side. End mounting bores usually run 1.020/1.015 inch ID by 1.75 inch OD, with the piston end body around 4 inches wide and the rod end nearer 2 inches. Those numbers aren’t trivia — they’re what determine whether a replacement cylinder or a rebuild kit will actually bolt back into your existing rotary lift without machining. When a dealership calls us about a lift that’s leaking or slow to rise, the first thing we ask for is the model and serial number, because matching bore and mounting dimensions correctly the first time saves a second visit.

Ceiling Height Math for CV Axle and Half-Shaft Bays

Most dealership service bays in the Des Moines metro were built with a specific vehicle mix in mind, and CV axle work often means lifting trucks and SUVs to full height so a tech can get a jack or transmission stand underneath. A rotary two-post lift with a standard cylinder typically needs 12 to 14 feet of overhead clearance to reach a 6-foot lift height without the carriage or arm assembly kissing the ceiling structure, ductwork, or lighting. If your bay has exposed HVAC trunk lines or a sprinkler grid lower than that, the cylinder’s stroke length becomes the limiting factor, not the lift’s rated capacity.

We’ve walked into more than one Iowa dealership where the original lift was undersized for the bay height, meaning the tech never gets full rise and ends up on a creeper for the last foot of axle work anyway — defeating the purpose of the lift. Before ordering a replacement cylinder or a whole new unit, measure from the floor to the lowest overhead obstruction, subtract at least 6 inches for safety clearance, and compare that number against the lift manufacturer’s overall height spec at full extension. This is the single most common measurement mistake we catch on service calls, and it’s a five-minute fix if you catch it before the equipment ships.

Door Swing and Arm Reach Around the Cylinder Housing

The other clearance question that trips up dealership layouts is door swing — not the shop’s overhead door, but how far the lift’s arms sweep out from the cylinder housing when positioning under a vehicle. A rotary air cylinder assembly mounted off-center on some two-post configurations changes how much the arm has to rotate to reach factory lift points on longer wheelbase trucks, which is common CV axle and half-shaft candidates. If your bay has support columns, tool carts, or a neighboring lift’s post within that swing radius, techs end up fighting the equipment instead of the vehicle.

We recommend mapping arm swing radius against your actual bay width before finalizing any cylinder or lift order, especially in dealership service departments running multiple lifts in a shared bay. A few extra inches of swing clearance on paper turns into real time savings when a tech isn’t repositioning a truck three times to get all four arms under factory pick points. This is also where symmetric versus asymmetric arm configurations matter — asymmetric setups reduce swing on the driver’s side specifically to improve door access for techs entering and exiting the cab during axle service.

Rebuild Versus Replace: What We See on Dealership Service Calls

A lot of the calls we get aren’t for new cylinders at all — they’re rebuild requests. We’ve had dealership contacts reach out about older Rotary two-post lifts, serial numbers decades old, where the cylinder is original equipment and just needs new seals rather than a full replacement. If the bore isn’t scored and the rod isn’t pitted, a reseal is almost always cheaper and faster than sourcing a new casting, and it gets the bay back online the same week rather than waiting on a backordered part.

That said, we don’t recommend rebuilding a cylinder blind. We’ve fielded requests for custom-built imported cylinders that needed seal kits, and matching seal dimensions correctly on non-domestic castings takes more care than a straightforward rotary air cylinder rebuild. If your dealership is running an older lift and unsure whether to rebuild or replace, send us the serial number and a few photos of the cylinder end caps — we can usually tell within a day whether a reseal makes sense or whether you’re better off swapping in new equipment before the next axle job goes down.

Air Supply and Compressor Sizing for Multi-Bay Dealerships

Even though the cylinder itself is hydraulically driven on most rotary lifts, air-assist circuits, pneumatic locks, and shop air tools all draw from the same compressor loop, and undersized air supply shows up as slow or hesitant lift operation just as often as a worn cylinder does. We’ve worked with dealership service departments running older rotary vane compressors rated near 11 bar with dual motors, and when those units start falling behind demand, lift response is usually one of the first symptoms techs notice.

If your dealership is adding bays or upgrading lifts, size the compressor for the whole shop’s peak draw, not just the new equipment. A rotary air cylinder circuit sharing air with impact guns, sanders, and paint booths during a busy CV axle morning will starve if the compressor was only sized for the lift. We walk dealerships through this calculation as part of any multi-bay lift quote, because a brand new cylinder installed on an undersized air system will get blamed for problems it didn’t cause.
