This collector’s outbuilding houses a mix of vehicles — a couple of low-slung classics, a pickup, and a daily driver — which meant the lift arm geometry needed to work across very different frame heights and pinch-weld locations without a lot of fuss. Rotary’s asymmetric arm layout, with front arms shorter than rear arms to match how weight distributes on most vehicles, made more sense for a garage swapping vehicles in and out regularly than a symmetric arm design that requires more careful positioning every time.

We also measured ceiling height with the arms fully raised and a tall vehicle on the pads in mind, checked overhead clearance for garage door tracks, and confirmed there was enough width between columns for his widest vehicle’s doors to open fully once it was up in the air. That last detail trips up a lot of collectors who assume any two-post lift will fit any garage — arm swing radius and column spacing need to match not just the vehicle’s width, but how much room you need to actually work once it’s lifted. Skipping this step is the number one reason we get called back to fix a lift that was installed by someone else without a proper survey.

Install Day and Getting the Arms Set Correctly

On install day, the columns and crossbeam go in first, but the arms are where most of the fine-tuning happens. We set initial arm length and pad height based on the vehicles he told us he’d be lifting most often, then walked him through adjusting them himself for the ones we hadn’t seen yet. Getting the pad contact points right on the first lift of a new vehicle is important — pads need to sit on factory-recommended lift points, not just wherever the arm happens to reach, and that’s especially true on lower classics where ground clearance is tight and arm angle changes fast.

We also spent time on the swing-out clearance for each bay position, since in a shared outbuilding, one lift’s arms swung out could get close to a neighboring vehicle’s mirror or door if positioned wrong. Small adjustments during install — rotating the column orientation slightly, confirming arm restraint pins locked cleanly at his most common vehicle heights — saved him from repositioning problems later. By the end of install day, he was swinging the arms in and out on three different vehicles without needing us to walk him through it again, which is really the goal of a good install: independence, not dependence on a callback for basic use.

The First Few Months: General Daily Maintenance Habits

For general daily maintenance on a collector’s lift, the arms need less attention than people expect, but they need consistent attention. We told him to wipe down pivot points and check for grease fitting access every month or so, since a garage that isn’t climate-controlled sees more moisture and dust than a heated commercial shop, and that accelerates wear on pins if grease isn’t replenished. He kept a simple log — date, vehicle lifted, any drag or stiffness noticed in the arm swing — which is more record-keeping than most home users bother with, but it made our first service visit faster because he could point to exactly when something changed.

Around month four, he noticed one rear arm dragging slightly when swinging out empty, a classic early sign of pin wear rather than anything structural. Because he caught it early and didn’t force the arm into position, it stayed a minor issue instead of becoming a locking mechanism problem. That’s the pattern we see again and again with collectors who store vehicles rather than run a high-volume shop: the arms last a long time if small drag and stiffness get addressed instead of ignored, but the same small issue on a shop running ten vehicles a day would compound into a real failure within weeks.

The First Service Call: What We Found and What We Adjusted

His first service call came about eight months in, driven by that dragging rear arm and a request to double-check torque on the anchor bolts after a full Iowa-adjacent winter of temperature swings. We regreased the pivot points, replaced a worn pin on the dragging arm before it got any worse, and confirmed all four rotary lift arms swung freely with even resistance side to side. We also rechecked pad height settings for a car he’d added to his collection since the install, since a different frame height meant the arm reach needed slight readjustment to hit the right lift points.

This visit is a good example of why we push collectors toward a first-year checkup even when nothing feels broken. A cold Midwest winter followed by a humid summer puts real thermal stress on concrete anchors and metal components, and catching a slightly loose anchor bolt or a stiffening arm early is a lot cheaper than dealing with a failure later. He’d budgeted for the visit before he ever needed it, which is the mindset we wish more owners had — treating the first year like a break-in period rather than assuming a new lift needs zero attention until something breaks.

What We’d Tell a First-Time Collector Buying a Rotary Lift

Looking back at this collector’s first year, the lessons are pretty transferable to anyone considering a similar setup. Don’t skip the site survey, even if your garage looks fine to the eye — slab condition and clearance issues aren’t always visible until someone measures them properly. Ask specifically about arm reach and pad height for your actual vehicles during the buying conversation, not just lift capacity, because a lift rated for your vehicle’s weight can still be a poor fit if the arm geometry doesn’t match your frame heights.

Keep a simple maintenance log even if you’re not required to, because it turns every future service call into a faster, cheaper visit instead of a diagnostic guessing game. And don’t ignore small symptoms — a dragging arm or a stiff swing is the lift telling you something before it becomes a real problem. This collector’s rotary lift arms are still performing well into their second year now, and the reason is almost entirely that small issues got caught early rather than any special maintenance regimen. That’s a pattern we’d love to see more collectors and small shop owners across Iowa and the surrounding region adopt before their first real problem forces the issue.
