When a vehicle collector outside Omaha called us about getting a two-post lift into his pole barn, the first question wasn’t about the rotary lift cylinder at all — it was about his slab. That’s usually how these projects go. Why the Site Survey Comes Before the Rotary Lift Cylinder Ever Gets Ordered

Every install we do for a collector starts with us walking the space, not flipping through a catalog. We measure ceiling height, check the slab thickness, look for existing plumbing or floor drains, and figure out where the lift’s columns will actually sit relative to the doors. For this Nebraska customer, his barn had a 14-foot ceiling and a slab that was poured for equipment storage, not for anchoring a two-post lift rated to lift several tons on a hydraulic cylinder. We had to confirm slab thickness and rebar placement before we’d even quote the unit.

This matters because a rotary lift cylinder is only as good as the structure holding the lift up around it. If the anchors pull out of a thin or cracked slab, it doesn’t matter how well-built the cylinder is — the whole system is compromised. We’ve turned away installs where the concrete needed to be replaced first, and we’ve had others where a simple slab patch and cure time solved it. Either way, this conversation happens before any equipment ships, and it’s the single biggest factor in whether a collector’s first year with a new lift goes smoothly or turns into a headache.

Choosing the Right Rotary Lift Cylinder Configuration for Exhaust and Driveline Work

Collectors doing exhaust and driveline access don’t need the same lift configuration as a quick-lube shop. They need clearance underneath, they need the ability to leave a vehicle up for days at a time while they source parts, and they need a cylinder setup that holds pressure reliably without creeping down overnight. We spec Rotary’s two-post systems for this exact reason — the hydraulic cylinder and its counterbalance valving are built to hold a load steady, which matters a lot when you’re mid-project on a numbers-matching driveline and you walk away for the weekend.

We also talk through symmetric versus asymmetric column placement at this stage, since door swing and column position change how much room you have to work underneath the vehicle for exhaust removal. A lift with poor clearance forces awkward creeper positions and makes simple driveline swaps take twice as long. Getting this decision right before the equipment arrives saves the customer from discovering the limitation the first time they’re actually under the car.

Electrical, Air Lines, and the Details Nobody Thinks About Until Install Day

A lot of collectors assume the lift install is just bolting down two posts and running hydraulic lines. In reality, most of our install day is electrical and air line routing. The power unit needs a dedicated circuit, and depending on the model, you may need compressed air for the locking mechanism release. In a pole barn setup like this one, that meant running new conduit from the panel, which the customer hadn’t budgeted for until we flagged it during the survey.

We always recommend collectors get a licensed electrician lined up before the lift arrives so the install crew isn’t waiting around for power. The same goes for air — if you don’t already have a compressor sized to run the lift’s release valves smoothly, that’s another piece to sort out ahead of time. None of this is complicated, but it’s exactly the kind of detail that turns a one-day install into a three-day install when it’s discovered last minute instead of planned for during the site survey.

Door Swing, Clearance, and Positioning the Lift for a Multi-Vehicle Rotation

Because this customer planned to rotate several vehicles through the same lift over the course of a year, we spent extra time on positioning relative to his overhead doors. Too close to the door track and you can’t fully open the door with a tall vehicle on the lift. Too far back and you lose usable garage space for parking the next vehicle waiting its turn. We used his tallest vehicle, a lifted truck, as the worst-case measurement and worked backward from there.

We also mapped out where his tool carts and jack stands would live during service, since exhaust and driveline work generates a lot of loose parts and fasteners that need somewhere to go besides the floor. Planning this out on paper before the lift bolts down meant he wasn’t rearranging his whole shop layout three weeks after the install because something didn’t fit the way he pictured it.

The First Service Call: What We Check on a Rotary Lift Cylinder After Year One

About eleven months after the install, we came back out for a routine check. This is standard practice we recommend to every collector customer — get the lift looked at before the one-year mark, especially if it’s seeing regular use. We checked the hydraulic fluid level and condition, inspected the cylinder’s seals for any early signs of weeping, and tested the locking mechanism through a full cycle range.

On this particular unit we found nothing concerning — the rotary lift cylinder was holding pressure exactly as it should, no drift, no seal leakage. But we’ve seen other first-year checks where a customer’s slab settled slightly and threw the columns out of plumb, or where a fitting wasn’t torqued to spec at install and needed attention. Catching these things at the one-year mark, rather than waiting for a failure, is a lot cheaper and a lot less disruptive to a collector’s project schedule.

Sourcing Parts and Rebuild Kits When a Rotary Lift Cylinder Eventually Needs Service

Even a well-installed lift will eventually need seal kits or a cylinder rebuild — it’s a wear item, not a lifetime part. When a customer calls us describing a leaking or slow-to-hold cylinder, we can usually identify the right part from the model and serial number alone, without needing the unit shipped to us first.

For a collector who only uses their lift a few days a week, a cylinder can last many years before it needs attention. But when it does start weeping fluid or losing hold overnight, waiting too long risks contaminating the slab or damaging the piston bore further. We’d rather get a customer the right rebuild kit early than have them limp along with a marginal cylinder for another season.
