When a third-generation transmission shop in West Des Moines called us about a rotary pad lift that had started drifting down overnight, we already had a good guess before we even got there: worn cylinder seals. Why a Rotary Pad Lift Cylinder Starts Drifting

The most common failure point on any rotary pad lift isn’t the motor, the cable, or the arms — it’s the seals inside the hydraulic cylinder. Over years of cycling, the piston seal and rod wiper both take a beating from grit, moisture condensation, and simple age hardening of the rubber compound. Once the piston seal starts to glaze or crack, hydraulic fluid slips past it under load, and the lift settles a fraction of an inch at a time until a technician notices the vehicle sitting lower than where they left it.

On this particular West Des Moines job, the shop’s single-post rotary pad lift had roughly 3/16 inch of drift over an eight-hour shift, which is enough for a transmission jack to lose contact with a properly seated cross-member. We pulled the cylinder, measured a 3.5 inch bore with an 8 foot stroke, and confirmed the piston seal had taken on a permanent set — it no longer sprang back to full diameter once compressed. That’s the telltale sign a rebuild kit, not just a top-off of fluid, is the right fix.

What’s Actually Inside a Rebuild Kit

A proper rebuild kit for a rotary pad lift cylinder includes more than just an O-ring. You’re looking at the piston seal, rod seal, wiper (sometimes called a scraper), backup rings, and typically a full set of static O-rings for the gland and base. Depending on the cylinder generation, some kits also include a new rod bushing, since bushing wear lets the rod cock slightly off-axis and accelerates seal wear on one side more than the other.

We always recommend measuring twice before ordering. Bore diameter, rod diameter, and gland thread pitch all vary between cylinder generations even on the same nominal lift capacity, and using a kit sized for the wrong generation is the single biggest cause of repeat failures we see in the field. If you’re not sure which generation cylinder you have, a photo of the gland nut and a caliper reading on the rod usually gets us to the right kit within a few minutes on the phone.

Tearing Down the Cylinder Correctly

Once the cylinder is off the lift and drained, the teardown itself is straightforward but unforgiving of shortcuts. The gland nut has to come off first, usually with a strap wrench or spanner wrench rather than channel locks, because gouging the gland’s sealing surface will cause a new seal to fail almost immediately. From there the piston and rod assembly slide out as a unit, and that’s the point where you inspect the cylinder wall for scoring.

On the transmission shop’s cylinder, we found light scoring about two-thirds of the way down the bore — nothing that required a full cylinder replacement, but enough that we recommended a light honing pass before installing new seals. Skipping that step and just dropping new seals into a scored bore is a common mistake that gets a rotary pad lift running again for a few weeks before it starts leaking in the exact same spot. Every seal we install gets a light coat of clean hydraulic fluid before it goes in, never grease, since grease attracts grit that can nick the new seal on the first stroke.

Bleeding Air and Testing Under Real Load

After reassembly, air in the system is the enemy. A rotary pad lift cylinder that isn’t properly bled will feel spongy, rise unevenly, or make a knocking sound as air pockets collapse under pressure. We cycle the lift empty several times, running it to full extension and back down, before ever putting a vehicle on it, watching the return speed and listening for that hollow knock that tells you there’s still trapped air.

Once the empty cycling is smooth, we load-test with the shop’s own equipment — in this case, a transmission jack loaded to a representative weight sitting on the lift’s cross-member adapter. We watch for drift over a ten- to fifteen-minute hold, which is long enough to reveal a seal that’s seated improperly but short enough not to tie up the bay all afternoon. On this job the rebuilt cylinder held rock steady, and the shop’s owner told us it felt tighter than it had in years.

Signs You Need a Rebuild Versus a Full Cylinder Replacement

Not every leaking rotary pad lift needs a brand-new cylinder. If the bore is clean or only lightly scored, a seal kit and a hone is almost always the more economical path and gets you back in service faster than waiting on a full cylinder casting. But if you’re seeing deep vertical scoring, pitting from rust, or a bent rod from an overload event, no seal kit is going to fix that — you’re into replacement territory.

We also look at the age and duty cycle of the shop. A transmission shop cycling a single-post lift ten or more times a day wears seals faster than a shop that uses a lift twice a week, so we factor real-world usage into whether we recommend a rebuild now versus budgeting for a full cylinder in the next year or two. Being upfront about that timeline, rather than upselling a replacement nobody needs yet, is how we keep customers coming back for a decade instead of once.

Iowa Climate and Cylinder Longevity

Iowa’s humidity swings and winter road salt tracked in on tires do a number on hydraulic cylinders that shops in drier climates never have to think about. Moisture condensing inside a cylinder overnight in an unheated bay accelerates seal hardening, and salt brine dripping off a lifted vehicle finds its way into every exposed fitting eventually. We see this constantly on service calls across central Iowa, and it’s a big part of why we recommend an annual fluid and seal inspection rather than waiting for visible drift.
