Step One: What’s Your Real Budget, Not Your Wish List Budget

Every decision tree starts with money, so let’s be honest about it. We talk to shop owners who tell us they want to spend around five grand including installation, and that number is workable — but it depends heavily on whether you’re buying new or refurbished, and whether the site needs concrete work or electrical upgrades first. A base-plate rotary two post lift with a modest lifting capacity can land in that range installed, but step up to a heavier-duty asymmetric arm configuration built for full-size trucks and frame-off restoration work, and you’re looking at a higher tier.

The mistake we see most often is a shop trying to save a thousand dollars upfront by buying an off-brand import, only to discover six months later that replacement arm pins, cable kits, or a hydraulic cylinder aren’t available anywhere in the country. Step Four: Don’t Skip Arm Restraints and Safety Cam Function

Every rotary two post lift on the market has arm restraints and a mechanical safety cam locking system, but not every shop trains staff to actually use them correctly, and that’s where accidents happen. The arm restraints keep the lift arms from swinging out from under a vehicle once it’s raised, and the safety cams engage automatically as the carriage rises, locking into place at intervals so the vehicle’s weight is held mechanically — not just by hydraulic pressure — if a seal or hose ever fails.

In a restoration shop, vehicles often sit up on the lift far longer than a quick-lube job — sometimes for days or weeks during a full restoration — which means the arm restraints and safety cam engagement get relied on constantly rather than for a fifteen-minute brake job. Step Five: Overhead vs. Baseplate Depends on Your Ceiling

Older restoration shop buildings around the lakes region often have lower ceilings or overhead doors that make an overhead-style lift a poor fit, which pushes the decision tree toward a baseplate configuration instead. Baseplate rotary two post lift models anchor through a plate at the base of each column rather than an overhead beam, which works well in retrofitted buildings, pole barns, and older brick shops where headroom is already tight.

Concrete that’s cracked, too thin, or laid over fill dirt won’t hold anchors reliably under load, and that’s a safety issue as much as a warranty one — most manufacturers require a minimum slab spec before they’ll honor the warranty at all.
