One Year In: A Marion RV Shop’s Rotary Two Post Lift Story

A rotary two post lift changes what an RV and trailer shop can take on, but only if the concrete under it is ready for the load. We worked with a shop near Marion last year that wanted to stop turning away differential fluid service jobs on travel trailers and small toy haulers because they didn’t have a way to get axles up in the air safely. They ended up with a rotary two post lift, and watching that install go from slab questions to a working first service told us a lot about what shops in this situation need to know before they sign anything.

Why an RV and Trailer Shop Chooses a Rotary Two Post Lift

Most RV and trailer shops start out with jack stands, a floor jack, and a lot of crawling. That works fine for basic brake jobs, but the moment a customer wants a differential fluid service on a travel trailer axle, or a full underside inspection on a toy hauler, the limits show up fast. A rotary two post lift gets the whole unit up in the air with the wheels hanging free, which matters when you’re draining and refilling gear oil on an axle assembly and need clean access without fighting a low frame.

The shop we’re describing had been referring that kind of work down the road for years. Once they had a rotary two post lift in the bay, they could take a trailer or smaller RV chassis, run it up, and have a tech underneath with both hands free instead of lying on a creeper. Arm length and lifting height on the two post design also gave them room to work around dual-axle setups that a four post drive-on ramp lift would have made awkward. For a shop trying to add differential fluid service and underside work to their menu, that flexibility was the deciding factor over sticking with stands.

Marion Concrete: Slab Thickness and Rebar Come First

Before we ever talk lift model, we talk concrete. A rotary two post lift anchors into the slab, and if that slab isn’t thick enough or doesn’t have the right reinforcement, the anchors won’t hold under load no matter how good the lift is. In Marion, like most of the shops we serve around central Iowa, older buildings sometimes have a thinner slab poured decades ago for foot traffic and light parts storage, not for anchoring a two post lift rated to lift a loaded trailer axle.

We ask for slab thickness and whether there’s rebar or mesh in it before we schedule an install crew. A lift installed on the wrong slab can pass a visual check and still fail an anchor pull test, and that’s not something you want to discover after a trailer is already up in the air. For this Marion shop, we reviewed their existing floor, confirmed thickness against the manufacturer’s anchor spec, and once it checked out, we moved forward with placement. If your shop’s slab is questionable, we’d rather find that out in the planning call than during the walkthrough, and we’ll tell you straight if a section needs to be broken out and repoured before a rotary two post lift goes in.

Setting Realistic Install Lead Times

One thing we’re upfront about: manufacturer lead times on a rotary two post lift are almost always optimistic. We’ve seen quoted windows in the 45-day range that don’t account for the fact that Rotary, like most manufacturers, isn’t always on schedule, and that quoted number typically doesn’t include shipping time either. We tell shops to plan on a wider window, and we’d rather under-promise and give updates along the way than have a shop counting on a date that slips.

For the Marion shop, we set expectations early that their timeline was closer to two to four months from order to install, not six weeks, and we kept them updated as the order moved through production and freight. That mattered because they were planning staff schedules and customer bookings around having the lift available. Nobody likes a surprise delay, but a delay you were warned about ahead of time is a lot easier to plan around than one that blindsides you the week you expected delivery.

Delivery Day: Forklift, Pit Access, and Floor Space

Before delivery, we ask the same logistics questions every time: do you have a forklift on site, is there a pit or floor obstruction we need to route around, and how much clear floor space is there to stage the lift columns before anchoring. A rotary two post lift arrives in sections, and getting it from the truck to its final position without a plan wastes a full day of labor that didn’t need to be wasted.

The Marion shop had decent bay clearance but no forklift of their own, so we coordinated equipment for the delivery day rather than showing up and discovering a problem on site. That’s a small thing that saves real money, because idle install crews cost the shop either way. We also walked the bay for overhead clearance, since RV and trailer work sometimes involves taller units than a standard passenger car bay was built around, and a rotary two post lift needs enough header room for the columns and the arm swing to clear a taller unit without the tech having to duck and guess.

Anchor Bolts and Workmanship Warranty

Shop owners ask us a fair question: what happens if an anchor bolt works loose a year in and it’s not the lift itself, it’s how it was installed. We tell them plainly that if it’s a workmanship issue related to our install, we make it right. That’s a different bucket than a manufacturer defect on the rotary two post lift itself, and knowing the difference matters when you’re troubleshooting a problem six or twelve months down the road.

We keep specific installation warranty terms on file and go over them before the sale, not after. For the Marion shop, that conversation happened during the walkthrough, before they pulled the trigger on the order, and it’s part of why they felt comfortable moving forward with us instead of getting a bare quote and no follow-through. A lift is only as good as the install underneath it, and we’d rather answer the
