Good rv shop bay design starts long before a lift ever gets bolted down, and we say that after walking into more than a few Iowa shops that built their bay around a pickup truck and then wondered why a 38-foot Class A wouldn’t fit through the door. Why RV Shop Bay Design Starts With the Ceiling and the Door

Every rv shop bay design decision we make with a customer begins with two numbers: overhead door clearance and interior ceiling height. A Class A diesel pusher can run 12 to 13 feet tall before you even raise it. If your door clearance is 14 feet, you have almost no room to lift the coach for underbody work once it’s parked inside. We’ve seen shops discover this the hard way, after the slab is poured and the walls are up, and the fix at that point is expensive.

The rule we give people planning new construction: build for the tallest unit you realistically expect to service, add lift travel on top of that, and then add another two feet for comfort and for whatever the next generation of RVs looks like. Diesel pushers keep getting taller, not shorter. If your rv shop bay design only accounts for today’s fleet, you’ll be retrofitting in five years. We’d rather help you get the number right once than call us back for a bay you’ve already outgrown.

Choosing Between Mobile Columns and In-Ground for RV Work

For most RV-focused bays, mobile column lifts are the more flexible answer, and it’s the setup we recommend most often for shops doing mixed RV and heavy truck work. A set of four, six, or eight wireless columns rolls into position under the axles or frame of a motorhome regardless of its wheelbase, then lifts in sync. There’s no fixed rail length to plan around, which matters a great deal in rv shop bay design since RV lengths vary from a 24-foot Class C to a 45-foot bus conversion.

In-ground lifts can work too, particularly in a permanent, high-volume bay where you’re not moving the lift location. But in-ground installation means pit work, drainage planning, and a real commitment to that bay layout. Mobile columns skip all of that and can be relocated to another bay or even another building if your business changes. For a shop still figuring out how much RV work it wants relative to truck and trailer work, that flexibility is worth a lot, and it’s a big reason mobile columns show up in nearly every rv shop bay design we help plan.

Floor Space, Turning Radius, and Getting the Rig In and Out

An RV’s turning radius is nothing like a car’s, and a shop bay that can’t accommodate a wide turn into the door is a shop bay that will scrape mirrors and quarter panels on the way in. We tell customers to walk the actual approach with a tape measure, not just the door opening, factoring in what’s parked outside and what’s coming down the drive at the same time. Good rv shop bay design accounts for the maneuver, not just the parked footprint.

Inside the bay, plan clear floor space around the lift columns for techs to move a service cart, a generator dolly, or a ladder without squeezing past a parked column. RVs also have slide-outs and awnings that may extend once the unit is inside, so leave side clearance beyond what the transport width suggests. We’ve adjusted more than one bay layout after a shop realized the slide-out needed six extra feet they hadn’t planned for.

Weight Capacity and Axle Configuration

A fully loaded Class A with full water tanks, generator, and towed vehicle prep can weigh well more than an empty pickup, and RV weight distribution is uneven front to back and side to side depending on where the tanks and slides sit. Any rv shop bay design has to account for real-world loaded weight, not the empty curb weight on the spec sheet, and it has to account for uneven axle loads too.

This is another place mobile columns earn their keep, since each column can be positioned at the actual load point rather than a fixed pad location, and the synchronized lifting keeps the unit level even when the weight isn’t evenly distributed. We size every system to the heaviest realistic load a shop expects, with margin, rather than the average unit that rolls through the door.

Utility Placement and Bay Layout Basics

Air lines, power drops, and lighting all need to be planned around where the lift columns and the rig itself will sit, not bolted on after the fact. Overhead reels for air and power keep cords off the floor where a tech is working underneath a raised coach, which matters more in RV work than most other bay types given how long service intervals run.

Lighting deserves its own mention. RV undercarriages are dark, complex, and full of tanks, wiring, and slide mechanisms that are hard to see clearly under a single shop light. Plan for supplemental lighting mounted to the lift structure itself or on adjustable stands, not just ceiling fixtures that get shadowed by the raised unit.

RV bays share more in common with other specialty shop layouts than people expect.
