RV shop lift planning is a different animal than planning a lift for a normal repair bay, and we’ve watched more than one Iowa shop find that out the hard way after the equipment was already bolted to the floor. A Class A motorhome or a loaded fifth wheel chassis brings weight, width, and wheelbase numbers that a standard two-post car lift was never built to handle. Start With Weight, Not Floor Space

Every conversation about RV shop lift planning has to start with actual gross vehicle weight, not the number stamped on the brochure for the smallest trailer you expect to see. Iowa RV shops that service everything from travel trailers to diesel pusher motorhomes need to plan around the heaviest unit that will realistically roll through the door, not the average one. We routinely see shops undersize capacity because they quoted a lift for the units they service today and never accounted for growth into bigger coaches.

A 30,000 lb rated four-post platform is a common starting point for full-size RV work, but some diesel pushers and toterhomes push well past that, and that’s before you add fuel, water, and cargo weight that’s often still in the rig during service. We always ask shops to pull actual GVWR figures off the units they see most and the heaviest one they’ve serviced in the last two years, then build in a margin. Undersizing capacity here isn’t a minor error — it’s a liability and safety issue that shows up the first time a fully loaded coach sits on a lift rated for half that weight.

Width, Length, and Wheelbase Reality

Standard four-post lifts built for pickups and vans are often too narrow or too short for RV chassis, and this is one of the most common gaps in RV shop lift planning we run into. Motorhomes and long trailers have wheelbases and overall lengths that don’t match anything on a typical dealership lot, and runway length matters just as much as weight rating. A lift with runways too short forces techs to work around overhang, which is both inconvenient and unsafe when jacking or supporting the frame.

We spec RV-specific four-post and specialty platforms with extended runways and wider spacing so techs can access dual rear axles, slide mechanisms, and undercarriage plumbing without fighting the equipment. Approach ramp angle matters too — a coach with low front-end clearance can drag or bottom out climbing onto a standard ramp, and that’s a call we get more than people expect. Getting the physical footprint right the first time avoids a costly retrofit or, worse, a lift that simply can’t take the vehicles the shop was built to service.

Ceiling Height and Roof Clearance

RVs are tall to begin with, and once you put one up on a lift, ceiling height becomes the limiting factor fast — often before weight capacity even enters the conversation. Class A coaches with roof-mounted AC units, satellite domes, and vent stacks can push total height well past what a standard shop bay was built for. We measure this early in every RV shop lift planning conversation because it’s one variable that can’t be solved with a bigger lift — it requires either a taller building or a different lift style altogether.

In-ground lifts sidestep the ceiling height problem entirely since the vehicle doesn’t rise as high relative to the roof, and that’s why we see more RV shops asking about in-ground platforms even though they cost more upfront and require more site work. For shops staying above ground, we run the numbers on rise height plus tire diameter plus roof accessories before anything gets ordered, because finding out a coach won’t clear the trusses after installation is a problem nobody wants.

Slab and Anchoring Requirements

Heavy RV lifts put serious point loads into the floor, and slab thickness and rebar are not optional details in RV shop lift planning — they’re the foundation the whole project depends on. Many older Iowa shop buildings were poured for light-duty repair work, not for four-post platforms rated at 30,000 lbs or more sitting under a fully loaded motorhome. We pull the engineering specs for the exact lift model before pouring or re-pouring anything, because retrofitting a slab after equipment is delivered turns a simple install into a full construction project.

We coordinate directly with contractors on anchor bolt patterns, slab depth, and load distribution so the pad is built to spec the first time. This is also where in-ground versus above-ground decisions get finalized, since in-ground platforms have very different pit and drainage requirements than a bolt-down four-post unit. Getting a structural engineer’s eyes on the plan when the shop building predates the lift decision saves real money down the line.

Layout for Traffic Flow

RVs need enormous turning radius and straight-line approach distance compared to cars and trucks, and that changes how a bay should be laid out. A tight service bay that works fine for pickups can become a bottleneck when a 40-foot coach needs to back in, straighten out, and pull forward onto a lift. Good RV shop lift planning accounts for drive aisle width, door height and width, and enough maneuvering room that a driver isn’t clipping mirrors or awnings getting into position.

We also look at how multiple bays interact — if a shop plans to run two or three RV lifts, staggered positioning often works better than a straight row, since it gives each unit its own clear approach without one coach blocking another’s swing path. Door height deserves its own gut check too, since even a properly sized lift is useless if the coach can’t physically enter the building with its AC units and vents intact.

Choosing Between In-Ground and Above-Ground

This decision shapes the whole rest of the project, and it’s one of the biggest forks in RV shop lift planning. Above-ground four-post lifts cost less upfront, install faster, and can be relocated if the shop ever changes layout, but they add height that eats into ceiling clearance and requires ramps for approach. In-ground lifts solve the height problem and give a cleaner look, but they need a pit, drainage planning, and a bigger construction commitment that’s hard to reverse.

For shops doing high-volume RV work with tall coaches and tight ceiling clearance, in-ground platforms often make more sense despite the higher install cost. For shops mixing RV work with trucks, trailers, and other vehicles, a flexible above-ground four-post setup usually wins on versatility. We walk through both scenarios with actual numbers — volume, vehicle mix, ceiling height, and budget — before recommending a direction, because this call is expensive to reverse once concrete or hydraulics are in the ground.

Planning for Service and Long-Term Use

A lift is a decade-plus investment, so RV shop lift planning should also cover how the equipment gets maintained once it’s running vehicles every week. Cable and hydraulic systems on heavy-duty platforms see more wear under RV loads than under typical car and truck traffic, so parts availability and service response matter as much as the initial spec.
