A safety cam inspection is one of those maintenance jobs that gets skipped until something goes wrong, and by then it’s usually too late. We’ve walked into Iowa shops where a two-post lift has been running for years without anyone ever checking the latch mechanism that keeps a loaded vehicle from free-falling if the hydraulic system fails. What a Safety Cam Inspection Actually Checks

On a two-post lift, the safety cam (also called a safety latch or pawl) is a spring-loaded mechanical stop mounted to the carriage that rides along a notched safety bar or rack welded to the post. As the carriage rises, the cam clicks past each notch. If the hydraulic cylinder or cable ever loses pressure or breaks, that cam is designed to catch in the nearest notch and hold the vehicle in place instead of letting it drop. A proper safety cam inspection means physically watching that cam engage and disengage through a full cycle, checking that the teeth on both the cam and the rack are not rounded off or chipped, and confirming the return spring still has tension.

We also check the release mechanism, usually a cable or rod connected to the lift’s release handle, to make sure it’s pulling both cams evenly on both columns. A lift with one side releasing a half-second before the other puts uneven load on the arms and can rack the carriage. We look at the mounting bolts for the cam bracket too, since vibration over years of use can back those fasteners out. None of this takes long for a trained tech, but it requires actually cycling the lift under load, not just a visual glance from the ground.

How Often You Should Schedule a Safety Cam Inspection

We recommend a safety cam inspection at least once a year for shops running a lift daily, and twice a year for high-volume operations like tire shops or quick-lube bays where the lift cycles dozens of times a day. Home garage owners running a lift occasionally can typically stretch to an annual check, but we still tell people not to skip it just because usage is low — corrosion and spring fatigue happen on a calendar, not just from cycle counts. Iowa’s humidity swings and winter road salt tracked in on undercarriages accelerate rust on exposed cam components faster than owners expect.

Most lift manufacturers, including Rotary and Challenger, specify inspection intervals in their owner’s manuals, and following those intervals matters for warranty coverage as well as safety. If you’ve never had a formal inspection done on a lift you inherited with a shop purchase or bought used, treat that as reason enough to schedule one now rather than waiting for the next annual date. We see this constantly with used equipment — the previous owner assumed someone else was keeping up on it.

Warning Signs Between Scheduled Inspections

You don’t have to wait for your annual visit to notice trouble. If you hear a grinding or clicking sound that’s different from the normal cam engagement noise, or if the lift seems to drop slightly before the cam catches when you set it down, stop using it immediately. A cam that’s slow to engage or that skips a notch is telling you the teeth are worn or the spring has lost tension. Visible rust flaking off the cam or the rack, especially in a shop that deals with road salt, is another sign that inspection is overdue.

We also tell techs to pay attention to how the release handle feels. If it takes noticeably more or less effort than it used to, something in the linkage has changed — a stretched cable, a bent rod, or a seized pivot point. Any of these can prevent both cams from releasing together, which is a real hazard when someone is trying to lower a vehicle. Don’t try to diagnose this by watching from underneath the car. Step back, watch the mechanism from the side, and if anything looks off, call for service instead of continuing to run the lift.

Why Worn Cam Teeth Are More Dangerous Than They Look

A cam tooth doesn’t need to be completely broken to fail. Rounded-off edges reduce the contact surface between the cam and the notch, which means the cam can slip under load even though it still visually appears to catch. We’ve seen lifts where a cam looked functional in a quick test with no vehicle on it, but under a loaded truck, the reduced engagement surface let the carriage settle an inch or two before catching hard. That kind of movement is unnerving with a person underneath, and it’s exactly why we insist on inspecting cams under actual load, not just cycling the lift empty.

This is also why we don’t recommend trying to true up worn cam teeth with a grinder or file. Reshaping hardened steel components changes their heat treatment and geometry in ways that are hard to predict, and a cam that looks fine after grinding can still fail at the wrong moment. Replacement cam and pawl kits are inexpensive relative to the risk, and swapping them is a straightforward job for anyone with basic mechanical ability and the right lift-specific hardware.

DIY Checks Versus Calling a Professional

There’s a reasonable amount you can check yourself between professional visits. Cycle the lift empty and listen for consistent clicking as the cam passes each notch, look for visible rust or metal shavings near the cam assembly, and test that the release handle operates smoothly with both cams disengaging at the same time. Keep a simple log of what you observe each month so you can catch gradual changes rather than relying on memory.

What you shouldn’t attempt without training is disassembling the cam bracket, replacing the safety bar, or making adjustments to the linkage geometry. These require lift-specific torque specs and, in some cases, factory alignment procedures that vary by brand and model. If you’re not confident interpreting what you’re seeing during a self-check, that’s exactly the situation a formal safety cam inspection is meant to cover. We’d rather field a call about a noise that turns out to be nothing than find out later that a shop kept running a lift with a compromised latch.

Two-Post Versus Other Lift Types

Most of what we’ve covered applies specifically to two-post lifts, since the cam-and-pawl design is standard on that style. Four-post lifts and scissor lifts use different mechanical locks, usually a ratcheting bar or a pin-style safety stop, but the underlying principle is identical: a mechanical backup that holds the vehicle if hydraulics fail. If you’re running a mixed fleet of lift types in one shop, don’t assume the inspection routine for one style covers the other. Each mechanism has its own wear points and its own inspection procedure, and treating them as interchangeable is how gaps in a maintenance program happen.
