A smart scissor lift bay layout is the difference between a shop that flows and one where techs are constantly working around each other. We get calls almost every week from Iowa shop owners who bought a lift, then realized mid-install that the bay they picked doesn’t leave enough room to open doors, roll a tire cart, or get a jack under the car. Start With the Vehicle, Not the Lift

Every good scissor lift bay layout starts with the biggest vehicle you expect to service, not the smallest. If your bay handles everything from compact sedans to three-quarter-ton pickups and vans, measure for the van. A scissor lift that’s plenty long for a Civic can leave a Silverado’s tailgate hanging past the platform, which is both awkward and unsafe. We walk customers through their actual vehicle mix before recommending a platform length and width, because the lift has to fit the worst-case vehicle, not the average one.

This also affects where you place the lift within the bay. If you’re servicing longer vehicles, you may need to shift the lift toward the rear of the bay to leave room for open doors and hoods at the front, or vice versa depending on your workflow. We’ve seen shops flip their whole bay layout just by moving the lift two feet in one direction, suddenly gaining enough clearance for a rolling tool cart or a second technician to work comfortably. Don’t assume the center of the bay is automatically the right spot — model it out with your actual vehicle length first.

Clearance Around the Platform

Once the lift is placed, the next scissor lift bay layout question is what’s happening around it. You need working room on both sides for tire removal, enough overhead clearance if you’re running a lift with a raised platform, and clear sightlines so a tech isn’t backing into a workbench. A rule of thumb we use: plan for at least three feet of clear space on each side of the platform where a technician actually stands, plus room behind the vehicle for exhaust work or a transmission jack.

Don’t forget swing space for lift arms, wheel-free adapters, or rolling jacks that slide under the platform on mid-rise and full-rise units. If your bay also has a support column, an air line reel, or a parts washer nearby, sketch those in before you finalize the lift’s position. We’ve corrected more than one layout where a customer only realized after installation that a support post blocked the door swing on the driver’s side. A five-minute tape-measure walkthrough before delivery saves that headache entirely.

Drive-Through vs. Drive-On Orientation

Scissor lifts are almost always drive-on, but orientation still matters. Deciding whether vehicles pull in nose-first or back in changes your entire scissor lift bay layout, especially in single-bay setups where there’s no room to turn around inside. If your shop door only opens one direction or your lot only allows pull-through traffic from one side, plan the lift orientation to match, not the other way around. We’ve had customers install a lift facing the wrong way for their traffic pattern and end up backing vehicles in every single day, which slows everything down and increases the odds of a mistake near the bay walls.

For shops running true drive-through bays with doors on both ends, orientation is more flexible, but you still want to think about where hoses, air lines, and electrical drops feed in. Positioning those on the side where techs actually work, rather than the side closest to the breaker panel for convenience, pays off every single day the lift is in use.

Utility Placement: Air, Power, and Hydraulics

A scissor lift bay layout isn’t complete until you’ve mapped out air lines, electrical, and any hydraulic connections the lift itself needs. Air-operated and hydraulic scissor lifts need a power drop and sometimes a dedicated air supply near the unit, and running those lines after the lift is already bolted down is far more expensive than planning them into the floor plan up front. We coordinate with electricians and plumbers on new installs specifically to avoid this — nobody wants conduit run across a walking path because it was an afterthought.

Think about where techs will plug in impact wrenches, work lights, and diagnostic equipment while a vehicle is up on the platform. Placing outlets and air reels within easy reach of the lift, rather than across the bay, cuts down on extension cords and hose runs that create trip hazards. It’s a small detail that makes a measurable difference in how efficiently a bay actually runs day to day.

Multi-Bay and Multi-Lift Considerations

If you’re outfitting more than one bay, your scissor lift bay layout decisions compound fast. Two lifts placed too close together can create a bottleneck when both are loaded with vehicles and a technician needs to walk between them with a cart or jack. We generally recommend planning aisle space between lifts as if both platforms are fully raised and both vehicle doors are open at the same time — because eventually, that’s exactly what will happen on a busy day.

It also helps to stagger lift orientations in adjacent bays if your building allows it, so exhaust systems, doors, and tool carts on each bay don’t overlap into the neighboring bay’s workspace. Shops that plan this out ahead of time report far fewer collisions between techs and far less time spent shuffling vehicles just to get room to work.

Storage and Portability

Some scissor lifts are designed to be moved between bays or stored against a wall when not in use, and that changes your layout math.
