Late last fall we finished a scissor lift for automotive storage install for a mobile mechanic in Iowa City who was tired of parking his personal project car outside every winter. He wanted the ability to store one vehicle up in the air and park his daily under it, and he wanted the flexibility to actually work on the stored car for winter projects. His shop is a three-bay pole building with twelve-foot side walls, concrete floor, and enough width to breathe. What he did not have was a clear read on which scissor design, which arm restraint style, and which safety-cam configuration would fit his workflow. The Iowa City job that changed how we quote scissor lifts

The customer called us in September asking about a two-post lift and left the conversation with a scissor lift for automotive storage instead. That flip happened because we walked his shop with him over video and looked at three things: door swing on the overhead, obstruction from a garage door opener, and the way he actually moved his cars in and out. A two-post would have forced him to park the daily driver at an angle to clear the columns. A scissor solved that instantly. The car sits up on the scissor, and the daily rolls straight in underneath without pretzeling around a column.

That single conversation changed how we quote lifts to anyone doing seasonal storage. We now ask the storage question first, because if you are storing more than servicing, a scissor lift for automotive storage is almost always the right call. Two-post lifts do not disappear when the car is down. The columns are still there. A scissor collapses flat to about four inches, and the car parked on top of it can drive off cleanly when the season changes.

Why the customer chose a scissor lift for automotive storage

Three factors decided it. First, ceiling height. His side walls were twelve feet but the trusses came down to about ten and a half in the middle. A full-rise two-post would have chewed into that headroom. A full-rise scissor with the car on top gave him just over seven feet of clearance under the frame, which was enough to park his daily driver and still walk around it. Second, floor real estate. He wanted the option to roll a motorcycle or a mower under the stored car in the summer. A scissor lets the underneath space stay usable. Third, cost. His budget was tight, and the scissor came in about four thousand dollars less installed than the equivalent two-post.

Cost is not always the deciding factor and we do not lead with it. But when the other two factors already pointed at the scissor, price sealed it. He also liked that the scissor gave him locking heights every couple of inches on the safety cam, so he could set the stored car at exactly the height that let his daily fit under with room to open a door.

The arm restraint conversation we walked him through

On a scissor lift for automotive service, arm restraints look different than on a two-post. There are no swing arms to restrain. Instead the vehicle sits on frame-contact pads or on drive-on runways, and the restraint job falls to the pad rubber, the pad locating tabs, and the safety cams. We spent about twenty minutes on the phone walking him through what to look for. Rubber pad tops must be clean and not oil-glazed. The pad locating pins should slot into positive-lock positions rather than friction detents. And the safety cams must be adjusted so both stacks engage within a quarter-second of each other on the way up.

He asked a fair question. If the safety cams do all the work, why does the design of the pad rubber matter. The answer is that between locks the pad rubber is the only thing keeping the car from sliding as the scissor climbs. If a pad has hardened from ten winters of cold cycles, it will not grip a modern low-profile tire footprint on a runway scissor or a frame rail on a mid-rise. We replaced his pads with fresh rubber before the install went live.

Safety cam engagement in practice

Once the install was live, we spent forty-five minutes on cam engagement training. On this scissor there are eleven safety-cam positions from three feet to seven feet of runway height. You hear each one click on the way up. The rule we gave him was simple. When you reach your working or storage height, back the hydraulic pressure down until the lift settles onto the nearest cam. That transfers the entire load off the hydraulic cylinder and onto a mechanical lock. If the hydraulic system leaks overnight, the car stays put.

Six months later he told us he backs it onto the cam every single time, storage or service. Habit forms fast when the safety mechanism is right there under your foot and the alternative is a stored car drifting down half an inch overnight. This is the kind of habit that gets missed when a customer buys a scissor lift for automotive work without training. Do not skip the walkthrough with your installer even if you have been around lifts for years.

Installation day: what the install actually looked like

We arrived at seven in the morning with the base frame, hydraulic power unit, and installation kit on a small trailer. First hour was slab verification. We confirmed the concrete was four inches thick with a rebar sweep. Second hour was layout: marking anchor points, verifying the runway envelope against the overhead door path, and confirming the parked vehicle path underneath. By noon we had the base frame set and anchored. Afternoon was hydraulic plumbing, cylinder bleed, and cam calibration.

We cycled the lift ten full times before we let him drive a car on it. That is standard practice for us. If a hydraulic fitting is going to weep, it weeps in the first ten cycles. We would rather find it before a car is on the pads. The whole install wrapped at four thirty in the afternoon with training and paperwork, and he was storing his project car by dinner. This is a normal day for a scissor lift for automotive install in central Iowa.

Six months later: how the lift is holding up

Spring came around and he sent us photos. The stored car came down clean, the safety cams engaged and released without hesitation, and the pad rubber had held up through six months of cold cycles. The one issue he flagged was hydraulic fluid weeping from a return line fitting we had missed on install day. It was a slow weep, not a leak, but it stained the slab under the power unit. We drove out on a Saturday, tightened the fitting, and cleaned it up. Total time on the road was three hours.

That kind of follow-up matters more than the sale itself. Any installer can drop a lift and disappear. Our commitment is that we come back when something needs attention. If you are shopping a scissor lift for automotive service and the vendor cannot tell you what their follow-up policy is, that is a red flag worth taking seriously.

What we learned and would do differently

Two things we changed after this job. First, we now do slab verification with a scan or a core sample by default on any storage-use install, because the load cycles on a stored vehicle are different than service cycles. Second, we ship fresh pad rubber with every install even when the lift is new, because the pads that come from the factory can sit in a warehouse for months and the rubber does not improve with age. Neither change added meaningful cost. Both changes reduce risk.
