Challenger Lifts came into the family in the early 2000s when Rotary and Challenger merged under the same parent. Challenger scissor product lines share power units, cylinders, and cable geometry with the Rotary lineup. The main visible difference is the paint color and some cosmetic covers. Under the skin the engineering is close enough that we stock parts kits that work on both. Forward Lift is the third brand in the same family, and it is the value tier — same engineering DNA, slightly stripped feature set. All three brands have real parts pipelines behind them.

Real dimensions from the SM122 install manual

Let us get specific with numbers, because a technical piece owes real dimensions. The Rotary SM122 scissor lift for automotive service is 12,000 pound rated, and the install manual gives the following real specs: runway length 200 inches, runway width 22.5 inches, overall lift width across the runways 84 inches, lowered profile 4.5 inches above the slab, rise height 68 inches at the runway surface, cycle time 45 to 55 seconds full rise. AW32 hydraulic fluid is spec for shop temperatures between 40 and 100 Fahrenheit. Below 40 Fahrenheit the fluid thickens and the cylinder speed drops noticeably, which is why southern Minnesota shops with unheated bays sometimes see slow rise in January. The fluid is the fix, not the lift.

What oil-change and fluid-service work actually demands

A scissor lift for automotive oil and fluid service does not need the tallest rise or the biggest capacity, but it does need the fastest cycle time and the most stable mid-height locks. Oil changes are volume work. The scissor is up and down thirty times a day in a busy family shop. Cycle time matters. Mid-height locks matter because oil changes and fluid service usually happen at chest height, not full rise. Cheap scissors lock only at full rise or full stop and expect you to hydraulically hold the mid positions. That is fine occasionally and terrible for volume oil work. If your shop does thirty oil changes a day, spec a lift with real mid-height mechanical locks, not just hydraulic holds.

AW32 is the spec for most shops, AW46 in warmer environments or where the fluid runs hotter. Do not mix grades. Filter changes go with the fluid change on the same schedule.

Cable inspections are the other non-negotiable. A commercial scissor typically has equalizer cables synchronizing the two runways, and those cables stretch and fray over the years. Annual inspection under the ALI standard catches most cable issues before they become failures, but a family shop that runs volume oil work should be spot-checking cables monthly. It takes five minutes with a bright flashlight. A frayed cable that fails at rise causes a stuck-lift event that we can fix but that costs the shop a day of production. Cheaper to catch it early.
