Item 1: Brand history first, features second
The single most important checklist item before you look at any spec sheet is brand history. There are three families of scissor manufacturers on the American market today: legacy commercial builders like Rotary that have been making lifts since the 1920s, mid-tier commercial builders like Challenger that have three decades of continuous production, and the churn category — house-brand imports with names that change every four or five years to escape parts obligations. That third category is where farm-shop buyers get burned most often.
When we sell a farm-shop customer in the Quad Cities region we spend real time on brand history because a lift with a five-year name change cycle is a lift with a five-year parts window. A cylinder seal kit that costs eighty dollars while the model is current can cost seven hundred dollars ten years later when the importer has moved on. Rotary and Challenger both maintain part numbers back through decades of production. That is what a legacy brand actually means, and it is worth paying for. Item 2: Verify the parts pipeline is real
Every lift brochure will claim strong parts support. Only a fraction of them can back it up. The way we verify a real parts pipeline is by picking three consumables — a cylinder seal kit, a lock cable, and a power unit motor — and asking the manufacturer for stocked lead times and part numbers before we ever endorse a quote. If the answer is a real number and a real box on a shelf, the brand passes.

Rise height matters too. A short scissor that maxes out at forty-eight inches leaves the pickup at working height for tires and brakes but not really for exhaust or driveline. A mid-rise scissor at fifty-six to sixty inches gives more usable clearance. A full-rise drive-on scissor is where you get true walk-under height, at the cost of drive-on runways that trap the wheels. The right answer for a farm shop that mostly does tires and brakes on its own trucks is usually a mid-rise pad with roughly nine-thousand-pound capacity. Item 4: Check your concrete before you shop
A scissor drops most of its load through two rows of pivot bearings onto four anchor points. Those anchors want four inches of properly cured concrete at 3,000 PSI minimum. Farm shops built in the 1990s or later usually have that. Older shops with mixed pours or repaired sections may not. Before we quote any scissor we ask the buyer to send a photo of the slab and, if there is any doubt, we walk it with a coring bit on the install day.
The cost of finding out the slab is too thin after install is high: pulling the lift, saw-cutting, repouring, curing, and reinstalling can add a couple thousand dollars and a week to the project. We would rather find it before we ship the lift. In a Quad Cities farm shop we have seen every kind of slab — from pristine new pours to old barn concrete with sawdust from a former use — and we treat each one individually. Item 5: Ceiling and side clearance sanity check
A scissor lift for automotive service does not need column clearance the way a two-post does, but it does need ceiling. A mid-rise scissor plus a full-height farm pickup wants roughly eleven feet of ceiling to get the vehicle up cleanly. Twelve is more comfortable. Under ten is a problem. Side clearance is easier: a scissor has no columns and no arms swinging outboard, so the bay only needs about a foot of side clearance around the raised vehicle for the tech to work.
We measure ceiling on site or from photos with a reference dimension. In older farm shops with truss ceilings we double-check the low point on any support gusset. In newer post-frame shops with clear-span trusses the ceiling is usually not the constraint. If it is close, we recommend a lower-rise unit before the buyer buys a taller one and then discovers it does not fit. Item 6: Power source and single-phase realities
Most commercial scissors ship as 220-volt single-phase from the factory. Most farm shops have that already because they run a wire welder, an air compressor, or both on that circuit. Verify the amperage — a scissor power unit typically wants a dedicated 30-amp circuit, and if your existing 220 outlet is shared with the compressor you may need to add a run.
If your shop is on three-phase, some models can be ordered that way from the factory and there is a small cost delta. If your shop is only 110-volt, you have a few options. A few home-grade scissors run on 110, but they are slower and lower capacity, and we do not usually recommend them for a farm shop that will eventually own a real pickup. The better path is to have an electrician add a 220 circuit at install time, which usually runs a few hundred dollars if the panel has room. We coordinate that timing with the install so the lift and the electrical land together, and the buyer is not paying for a service call because the outlet was not ready.
Item 7: Iowa install and long-term backup
The last item on the checklist is the one that never appears in an online spec sheet: who is going to install this thing, and who is going to answer the phone when it needs service in year twelve. Buying a scissor from a national online retailer often means an anonymous drop-off on a common carrier, a broken pallet, a missing part, and a bill for freight damage the buyer has to fight for months.
