European-marque specialty shops in northwest Iowa keep hearing the same tired myths about running alignment work on a scissor lift for automotive service. “Scissors are too flexy for alignment.” “You can’t hit factory spec on a platform lift.” “Only a four-post rack will do it.” Some of that was true fifteen years ago. Almost none of it is true today, and repeating it costs shop owners real money on a bay retrofit. Myth 1: Scissors Are Too Flexy for Alignment

This is the myth we hear the most and it’s dead wrong on a modern alignment-rated scissor lift for automotive service. The platforms on a Rotary or Challenger alignment scissor are engineered with a torsional stiffness spec that keeps the runway within alignment tolerance under full rated load. That’s not marketing — it’s the reason the manufacturer publishes the lift as alignment-rated in the first place. Flex on a bargain-brand scissor? Sure, plenty. Flex on a compliant alignment scissor sitting on a properly anchored slab? Not in a way that shows up on a Hunter alignment head.

Where shops actually get in trouble is when they buy a general-purpose scissor lift for automotive maintenance and then try to run alignment on it. General-purpose scissors don’t have turnplate pockets, don’t have slip plates in the rear, and don’t publish an alignment-tolerance spec. Buy the alignment-rated model and this myth goes away. Buy the wrong model and you’ll spend a year chasing camber readings that shift half a degree when the tech leans on the fender. The lift didn’t fail — the wrong lift was picked. It’s a very common mistake and it’s very fixable at the quote stage.

Myth 2: You Can’t Hit Factory Spec on a Platform Lift

Factory alignment specs on European marques are tight — often quarter-degree tolerance on camber, sub-millimeter thrust angle. The myth says a scissor won’t hold those tolerances. In practice, a properly leveled alignment scissor lift for automotive service holds those tolerances all day, provided the slip plates and turnplates float freely and the platform sits at the alignment height marked on the runway. That last piece is what most shops miss. The alignment height is a specific notch on the safety ladder — usually printed on the platform itself — and if you skip it and set the tech height for whatever’s comfortable that day, your readings drift.

The other factor is slab flatness under the anchors. If the slab is a quarter-inch off across the platform footprint, the platform is a quarter-inch off. Our install crews shim to a laser level, not to a stubby bubble level, because a quarter-degree tolerance on the readout is meaningless if your platform baseline is a quarter-degree off. Do the leveling right and hitting factory spec on a modern European car is a routine morning of work.

Myth 3: Arm Restraints Don’t Matter on a Platform Lift

Arm restraints are a two-post concept that shop owners sometimes assume don’t apply to a scissor. On a pad-style scissor lift for automotive service the equivalent function is the pad-locking mechanism and the pad-position lock. If your scissor has adjustable-slide pads, those pads must be locked in position before the lift comes up. If they’re not, they can walk under load and put the vehicle off-center on the platform. That’s the failure mode people don’t see coming because it doesn’t happen every day — it happens once, on the wrong car, on a wet-floor Tuesday.

Runway-style scissors don’t have this issue because the vehicle sits on continuous rails. But if you’re running a pad-style alignment scissor, treat the pad locks like arm restraints on a two-post: verified engaged every single lift, no exceptions. Take five seconds. This is where the arm-restraint discipline transfers directly from a two-post workflow into scissor workflow, and skipping it is one of the most common mistakes we see on a bay retrofit where the tech was trained on two-posts and treats the scissor as an easier machine.

Myth 4: Safety-Cam Engagement Is Automatic

Every alignment scissor lift for automotive service has mechanical safety cams — spring-loaded pawls that engage a toothed ladder as the platform rises. Locks click every couple of inches. Shop owners hear “automatic” and assume the lift is safely mechanically locked as soon as the up button releases. It’s not. The lock only engages when the platform drifts down onto the next lower notch. If you release the up button and immediately reach under the vehicle without allowing that drift-and-clunk, you are working on live hydraulics.

The correct sequence is: raise to the alignment height, release the up button, let the platform drift down onto the next lock notch, verify the audible engagement, then start work. Every legitimate lift manufacturer prints this in bold in the owner’s manual. Techs skip it because it feels slow and it’s genuinely under two seconds when done right. Two seconds of drift-and-clunk versus a hydraulic failure with a technician underneath the car — this is not a hard tradeoff. Build it into training on day one and hold the shop lead accountable for auditing it.

Myth 5: All Scissor Lifts Work for Alignment

They don’t. A short-rise oil-change scissor doesn’t lift high enough for a tech to comfortably read alignment heads. A pad-style scissor without turnplate pockets doesn’t accommodate the front-wheel rotation an alignment demands. A scissor without slip plates in the rear axle position doesn’t let the rear thrust angle self-correct as the front comes into spec. If you buy the wrong scissor lift for automotive alignment, you’re going to hate the workflow and it’s not the lift’s fault — it’s the pick’s fault.

The correct machine is specifically labeled as an alignment scissor by the manufacturer. It has turnplate pockets in the front, slip plates in the rear, an alignment-height marker on the platform, and the platform stiffness spec published by the manufacturer. Rotary and Challenger both make this class of lift. Ask any dealer explicitly for the alignment-rated model, not just “a scissor,” and read the spec sheet before you sign. Fifteen extra minutes of homework saves you from a $6,000 mistake.

Myth 6: You Can’t Store a Car on an Alignment Scissor

This is the myth that trips up dual-use shops. Alignment scissors are optimized for alignment geometry, but they still hold their rated capacity indefinitely on the mechanical locks. If the manufacturer rates the safety cams for full-capacity static hold — and most do — you can absolutely park a vehicle on the alignment scissor for storage between alignment jobs, provided you lock to the safety cam and drop hydraulic pressure. That’s the safe protocol on any scissor lift for automotive service, alignment-rated or otherwise.

What you shouldn’t do is leave a vehicle on live hydraulics for hours or days. Hydraulic seals are not storage devices. They’re motion devices. Leave a vehicle on hydraulic pressure overnight and you’ll come in to a slowly drifted platform and a puddle. Lock the vehicle to the safety cam, drop pressure, walk away. When you come back, raise slightly to disengage the pawl and lower normally. Do this correctly and an alignment scissor doubles as overnight storage without penalty. Do it wrong and you’re rebuilding a cylinder in six months.
