A northwest Iowa collector who spent last summer pouring a new pole-building shop for a growing car collection needed a scissor lift for automotive oil pan gasket work and general maintenance on ten vehicles rotating in and out of storage. This is a year-in-review of how that install went, from the slab pour with rebar decisions through the first cylinder service twelve months later. What follows is a straight account of what worked, what surprised the owner, and what we would change if we did it over.

The Slab Pour: Where the Decision Really Started

The building was a 40×60 pole barn on a fresh site. Concrete contractor was scheduled for a Tuesday, and the owner called us the Thursday before to ask what slab thickness he needed. That timing was fortunate. The scissor lift for automotive collector use we recommended needs 4 inches minimum of 3,000 psi concrete for the anchor spec to work. The contractor was planning a 4-inch slab across the whole building.

We asked him to thicken the slab to 6 inches in the 12×24 area where the lift would sit, and to add a second grid of rebar in that zone. That change added maybe $400 to the concrete bill, and it gave the anchors a much better foundation to grip. Six-inch reinforced concrete resists anchor pull-out under repeated lifting far better than the minimum spec does. Twelve months in, the anchors show no signs of loosening or telegraphing through the surface. Money well spent on paper, and doubly well spent in confidence.

Rebar Placement: The Anchor-Pattern Overlay

We sent the concrete crew a PDF of the lift’s anchor-hole pattern the day after the owner ordered the lift. The pattern shows exactly where the four wedge anchors go, in inches, relative to the front centerline of the lift. The concrete crew used that overlay to lay out the rebar grid so no rebar sits directly under an anchor location. That is a small optimization that saved real trouble on install day.

When anchors are drilled into slab that has rebar directly underneath, the drill catches, the hole goes off-plumb, and the anchor either does not seat or seats crooked. In a new pour, moving the rebar around the anchor grid is trivial. In an existing slab, it is impossible. The collector’s shop went from concrete pour to lift install with zero anchor issues because that PDF got emailed a week before the pour. Delivery Week: The Freight Coordination

The lift shipped 21 days after order, which is typical for a scissor lift for automotive use in stock at our warehouse. The freight company scheduled a two-hour window, called the day before, and arrived with a liftgate truck as we had specified. The crate was on the slab within twenty minutes of the truck’s arrival. The collector had a skid-steer with pallet forks in the barn, and we had originally planned to unload with that, but the liftgate delivery made it unnecessary.

The one surprise was crate size. The owner had expected something the size of a large refrigerator; the crate was closer to a small pallet-shipping stack, about 8 feet long, 5 feet wide, and 4 feet tall. That fit through the pole-barn door but only barely. Restoration shops with narrower doors sometimes need to uncrate outside and walk components in. Measure the widest crate dimension against the door before delivery. Nothing worse than staring at a crate that will not go through the door.

Install Day: Anchor to Power-Up

Install day was one long Saturday. Uncrating took about an hour, positioning the platform on the slab took another hour, and drilling the anchor holes took maybe two hours for four holes because the collector was careful about depth and cleanout. Wiring the 220V circuit added another 90 minutes because the electrical contractor had already run a subpanel with a properly sized receptacle mounted near the lift location.

Total install time end to end was about six hours including the fluid fill and initial break-in cycles. That is roughly what we quote first-time DIY installers when they call and ask. Professional install crews knock it out in about half that. The collector chose DIY, and the result was as good as a pro job because the anchor pattern went into the slab correctly on Tuesday and the electrical was in place on Friday. Preparation matters more than raw install speed on a scissor lift for automotive collector work.

First Vehicle Up: The Uneventful Moment

The first vehicle on the lift was a mid-70s American full-size sedan the collector had been meaning to service for months. The lift arms cradled the frame at the OEM lift points, the platform rose smoothly, the mechanical locks engaged at the first click height, and the oil pan gasket work happened over the course of an afternoon. Nothing dramatic. Which is exactly the goal.

The collector’s note to us after that first service was that the lift felt quieter and steadier than the drive-on ramps he had used for years, and the click-lock height adjustment meant he could set the sedan at a slightly lower working height than the full extension for the actual gasket wrench work. That every-two-inches click adjustment is one of the underrated features of a scissor lift for automotive service. Buyers expect a lift to be either fully up or fully down, and the incremental locks turn it into a proper adjustable workbench for whatever height suits the job at hand.

Month Six: The First Real Test

Six months in, the collector was rotating vehicles through the shop for storage in and storage out. A heavier pickup came in for shocks and brakes; the lift handled it without complaint. A low-slung sports car came in for exhaust work; the pad-lift approach worked fine because the frame contact points cleared the lifted-frame profile easily. The lift had accumulated about 200 cycles by that point, which is well within the maintenance-free range.

The one operational note from that period was that the shop’s ambient temperature dropped into the 40s in November, and the hydraulic fluid ran noticeably slower at cold startup. The owner was tempted to run space heaters to warm the shop before lifting, but the fluid spec is fine down to about 0 degrees Fahrenheit with the AW32 grade the manual calls for. Slow first lift on a cold morning is normal. Two or three cycles warms the fluid enough that the rest of the day runs at full speed. Not a defect, just physics.

Year One Service and What Comes Next

At the twelve-month mark, the collector ran the annual service the manual specifies. Fluid level check, anchor torque check, hose inspection, cylinder rod visual inspection, and a lubrication pass on the hinge pins. Total time was maybe 45 minutes. Nothing needed replacement. Nothing was leaking. The anchors held their torque without adjustment.

The plan for year two is the same. The plan for year five is a proactive seal kit swap even if the cylinders show no signs of weeping, because a scissor lift for automotive collector use running 300 to 400 cycles a year will benefit from the fresh seals long before the old ones start failing on their own. That is the philosophy we push with every buyer: replace consumables on schedule rather than waiting for a failure that takes the lift out of service at the worst possible moment.
