Last spring an RV and trailer service shop in Council Bluffs called our team about a scissor lift for automotive and light-truck differential service. They had been running two 10,000-pound 2-post lifts for the tow vehicles and slide-in campers, and they wanted a third machine that could handle a Ram 3500 diesel with the diff on the ground so a tech could actually stand under it. The initial phone call and the shop layout they were working with
The shop had a 40 by 60 pole building with a slab poured in 2018, 14-foot side walls, and two roll-up doors on the long side. The two 2-posts sat parallel on the east wall, and the third bay was empty concrete they’d been using for parts staging. That’s where the new scissor lift for automotive service would go. When we walked the bay in person, we noticed a floor drain running down the centerline of the empty stall, and a low-hanging light fixture that would sit about six inches over the top of a raised drive-on runway.
Those two details are the kind of thing that don’t show up in an email exchange or a phone quote. If we had shipped a full-rise scissor without walking the shop, the customer would have been on the phone the day of install asking why the runway hit the light and why we needed to cut into the drain. Instead we shifted the machine four feet north, we moved the light to the side wall, and the customer paid our normal install rate with no change orders. Why they picked a full-rise scissor over a third 2-post
A third 2-post would have been the obvious answer, but two things pushed them toward a scissor lift for automotive diff work. The first was width. The tow rigs coming through were Ram 3500 duallys and F-450s, and the arms on their existing 2-posts were maxed at the widest setting for those trucks. A wide drive-on scissor cleared the duallys without any arm placement at all. The tech just rolled the truck on, chocked, and lifted.
The second reason was travel trailers. Slide-in truck campers can’t go on a 2-post, and neither can a bumper-pull trailer with the tongue jack in the way of the swing arms. The shop’s owner told us later that the scissor picked up something like 30 extra jobs a quarter that they used to turn away because the 2-posts couldn’t take the shape of the vehicle. That was more than enough to pay the machine off in year two.
The garage build-out sequencing we recommended
The customer wanted the lift in before spring RV season. We told them the honest timeline: order to delivery was about four weeks, floor prep and any concrete cure work needed another week of buffer, and the install itself took a day and a half with our crew. That put us at six weeks from PO to first lift, and we didn’t want to compress it. Slab cure time matters more than most shops think, especially in the shoulder seasons when temps swing 30 degrees between morning and afternoon.
We also recommended sequencing the electrical work before the concrete. The shop needed a 220V single-phase pull to the new bay, and the electrician wanted to trench across the slab. Doing that after the lift was in would have meant surface-mount conduit that looked terrible and could get clipped by a jack. Trenching first, patching the slab, letting it cure, then installing the machine kept everything clean and out of the way. We coordinated the calls with their electrician directly so the owner didn’t have to babysit two contractors.
Install day and the first lift with actual weight on it
Our install crew rolled in at 7 a.m. on a Tuesday. The machine came in on a flatbed, we uncrated it in the parking lot, and we walked it into the bay on a pallet jack. The base sits flush with the floor thanks to the recessed pit we cut for it, so the roll-on ramps come down to zero height. Anchoring took about two hours because we hit rebar on one of the anchor holes and had to reposition it. The hydraulic power unit mounted to the north wall with about eight feet of hose run.
The first vehicle on the lift was a Ram 2500 belonging to one of the shop’s regulars. We ran it up to full height with the shop’s owner walking around the perimeter and listening to the locks click. The tech dropped the differential cover, changed the fluid, and had the truck back on the ground in 35 minutes. That was the moment the shop owner said out loud that he wished he had bought two.
The first big service call at six months
At six months the shop called us about a hydraulic weep at one of the base cylinders. This is normal. Cylinder seals are a wear item, and we plan for a first-year check regardless of what the shop reports. When we arrived we found a slight seepage from the rod seal, we swapped in a new seal kit, we topped the reservoir, we cycled the machine ten times with a Ford F-350 on it, and we handed it back. While we were there we also ran the annual ALI inspection sheet even though the machine wasn’t due for another six months. The shop owner wanted to know if anything was drifting out of spec. Nothing was. The locks still caught within tolerance, the level check was fine, and the electrical junction was dry. He renewed our service contract for year two on the spot.
Diff service workflow that changed after the scissor arrived
Before the scissor lift for automotive diff work, the shop was pulling differentials with the truck up on the 2-post and the tech reaching over the swing arms. It worked but it was slow, and it was awkward on wider rear ends where the arms fought the axle. On the scissor drive-on, the tech has a completely open floor under the truck. What the shop would do differently a year later
When we asked the owner at the twelve-month mark what he would change, he had two answers. First, he wished he had spent the extra couple thousand on the wider runway option. His trailer clients showed up with wider stances than a passenger truck, and the standard runway width worked but was tight. Second, he wished he had bought the air-line kit factory-installed instead of adding it later. Retrofitting an air line on a scissor is not hard but it’s a couple of hours of labor he didn’t need to pay for.
Nothing else changed. He would buy the same scissor lift for automotive service again. He would use the same install crew. He would sequence the electrical work the same way.
