An EV specialty shop in the Iowa-Illinois corridor called us last year with a specific problem: they were doing a steady stream of wheel bearing and hub work on electric crossovers, they had a low ceiling in their second bay, and they had already decided a scissor lift for automotive service was the answer. They were mostly right — but almost every assumption they brought to the conversation was wrong. Wrong about capacity math on a battery-heavy vehicle, wrong about lift-point access, and badly wrong about what freight day was going to look like at a leased building with no dock and no forklift. This is the myth-busting piece we wish they had read first.

Myth 1: “EVs Are About the Same Weight as What We Already Lift”

This is the most expensive misconception in the EV service world right now. A mid-size electric crossover can weigh a thousand to two thousand pounds more than its gas equivalent, and full-size electric pickups have pushed well past nine thousand pounds curb weight. Shops that have been happily running 6,000 and 7,000 lb equipment for fifteen years suddenly have vehicles rolling in that are at or over the rating with a technician’s toolbox on the deck.

Worse, the weight is distributed differently. A skateboard battery pack puts hundreds of pounds low and centered between the axles, which changes where the load lands on a platform and how the vehicle behaves as it comes up. That is not automatically a problem — a low center of gravity is stable — but it means you cannot just look at front and rear axle weights the way you would on a body-on-frame truck. When we spec a scissor lift for automotive EV work, we look at gross vehicle weight rating, not curb weight, and then we add margin on top. If your heaviest regular customer vehicle is 9,000 lbs, we are not selling you a 9,000 lb machine. We are talking about 10,000 or 12,000 lb capacity, and we are talking about pad footprint and runway length so that a long-wheelbase electric truck actually sits where it is supposed to sit. Under-buying on capacity is the single most common mistake we see in shops transitioning to electric work, and it is not a mistake you can fix cheaply once the equipment is anchored to the floor.

Myth 2: “A Scissor Means We Lose Wheel Access”

This one is half true, which is why it persists. A basic mid-rise scissor lifts the vehicle by the rocker pinch welds or frame rails with the platforms sitting inboard of the wheels, and on some designs the structure genuinely does crowd the wheel well. If your bread and butter is wheel bearing and hub service, that is a real objection worth taking seriously.

But it is not the whole product category. Full-rise scissor models with proper drive-on runways and rolling jacks give you wheels-free access exactly the way a four-post does, and low-profile mid-rise units with narrow center structures leave the wheel arches wide open. We have installed plenty of these in shops doing high-volume brake, bearing, and suspension work. The question to ask is not “scissor or not” — it is “what is the width of the structure underneath at the point where my technician needs to swing a hub assembly out?” That is a measurable number, and it varies significantly between models. When shops call us about this, we pull up the actual dimensional drawings rather than trading generalities. Myth 3: “It Only Goes All the Way Up or All the Way Down”

We hear this constantly, usually from people whose only experience is with a cheap portable jack. On the machines we sell and service, mechanical locks engage roughly every two to two-and-a-half inches through the full travel range. You raise the platform, listen to it click through positions, and lower onto whichever lock puts the vehicle at your working height. If you are pulling a rear hub and you want the axle at bench height, you set it there.

For EV work this flexibility matters more than most shops realize. Battery pack service, underbody panel removal, and coolant loop work all happen at different comfortable heights, and a lot of EV underbody procedures require you to work with a support fixture or a table underneath. Being able to bring the vehicle down onto a lock at a precise height instead of fighting it at full extension makes those jobs faster and safer. It also means less hydraulic cycling, which means less pump wear and less heat in the fluid over a busy day. The discipline we teach at every install is the same one we would teach a first-year tech: raise past your target height, lower onto the mechanical lock, then push on the bumper to confirm the lock is fully seated before anyone goes underneath. Hydraulic pressure is for lifting. Steel locks are for holding. Nobody works under a vehicle that is only being held by oil, and a properly maintained locking system makes that rule easy to follow.

Myth 4: “Freight Is the Vendor’s Problem”

Here is where we lose the most goodwill in this industry, and it is almost always avoidable. When you buy a scissor lift for automotive service, you are buying a crated assembly that can run anywhere from roughly 1,200 to over 3,000 pounds depending on capacity and whether you ordered runways and a rolling jack. It ships LTL on a flatbed or a van trailer. The carrier’s job ends at the back of the truck. Getting it off the truck and into your building is yours unless you have explicitly arranged otherwise.

So the questions to settle before the order ships are simple and specific. Do you have a dock at the right height, or do you need a liftgate? A liftgate has a weight limit, and a heavy full-rise crate can exceed it — meaning the liftgate you paid for is useless when the driver arrives. Do you have a forklift on site with enough capacity and long enough forks to handle an awkward crate, and is someone certified to run it? If you are leasing, does your landlord allow a semi on that approach, and will the pavement take it in a spring thaw? We ask every one of these questions on the phone before we dispatch anything, because we have seen the alternative: a driver on a two-hour detention clock, a crate sitting in a parking lot in the rain, and a shop owner scrambling to rent equipment at Saturday rates. Ten minutes of planning eliminates the entire problem.

Myth 5: “We Can Unload It With What’s Lying Around”

Improvised unloading is how people get hurt and how equipment gets damaged before it is ever bolted down. A crated scissor assembly is heavy, its center of gravity is not where you would guess, and the crate itself is not always strong enough to be strapped and dragged. We have seen frames tweaked and hydraulic lines pinched during unloading, and the damage does not always show up until the platforms refuse to track together during the first bleed.

What actually works: a forklift rated well above the crate weight with forks long enough to reach past the center of mass, a spotter, and a plan for where the crate lands. If you do not have that, arrange it in advance — a local rental yard, a neighboring business with a lift truck, or a delivery service that includes inside placement. Have the crate set down close to the final install position so you are not skidding it across a finished floor. Inspect it before you sign the delivery receipt: photograph the crate on the truck, note any crushed corners or shifted banding, and write damage on the bill of lading. Once you sign clean, freight claims get very difficult. We tell every customer to unpack and inventory the same day, not the following week, because concealed damage claims have a short window. One more thing worth saying plainly: schedule your unloading help for the delivery window, not for the day the truck is supposed to arrive. LTL delivery dates move.

What We Actually Recommend for EV Shops in the Corridor

Pulling it all together: if you are running an EV-focused shop between Des Moines and the Quad Cities and your volume is wheel bearings, hubs, brakes, and suspension, we usually push toward a higher-capacity full-rise scissor with drive-on runways and a rolling jack, or toward a two-post if your ceiling and floor plan allow it. The two-post is often cheaper per pound of capacity and gives unmatched wheels-free access. Where the scissor wins is short ceilings, bays that need to stay clear for other uses, and shops where the flush-mount option makes the floor usable for battery tables and support fixtures.

Whatever you land on, get the slab confirmed first — thickness, cure, reinforcement — because anchoring high-capacity equipment into marginal concrete is the shortcut that ends careers. Then build a maintenance rhythm: hydraulic fluid at spec with the deck down, quarterly cable and sheave inspection, pivot pins greased, anchor torque re-checked after the first month.
