Buying a scissor lift for automotive restoration and metal work in a farm shop is a bigger decision than most first-time buyers realize. Farm shops around Waukee are usually thirty by forty pole buildings with twelve-foot walls, a concrete slab poured years ago at unknown thickness, and an overhead door that swings up into the interior envelope. That combination of unknowns kills more lift installs than any other factor we see in central Iowa. A scissor lift for automotive restoration in a farm shop

Restoration work is different than daily service. You spend hours under the car with a wire wheel, a MIG torch, or a floor pan patch. You climb up and down more times per hour than a normal shop rotation. And you work at multiple heights because you are sanding at the fender line one hour and welding at the frame rail the next. A scissor lift for automotive restoration should give you clean, easy access at every one of those heights, and it should collapse flat when you want the car on the floor for engine-out work or paint. That combination points at a full-rise scissor with drive-on runways, not a two-post.

The reason we push farm-shop customers away from mid-rise scissors for restoration is height variability. A mid-rise gets you to waist height and stops. Restoration wants shoulder height for underbody and waist height for exterior. A full-rise scissor with a safety cam at every two inches lets you dial in exactly where the work sits, then lock it and forget the hydraulics. That flexibility is worth every extra dollar the full-rise costs over the mid-rise if restoration is your primary use case.

Ceiling height checklist

Measure ceiling height in three places, not one. Measure at the peak, at the halfway point of the trusses, and at the wall. In a Waukee-area pole building with a twelve-foot wall you will often see the trusses come down to around nine feet at the wall and rise back up to twelve at the ridge. The lowest measurement is the one that matters because when the scissor lift for automotive service reaches full extension, the roof of your vehicle needs to clear the lowest point along the runway path.

Bring your tallest vehicle into the equation. A lifted crew-cab pickup sits around eighty inches at the roof. Add a seventy-two-inch full-rise runway height and you are at twelve feet six inches. That will not clear a nine-foot truss low point. It will clear a twelve-foot ridge. So on paper the lift fits, but the truck can only sit centered on the ridge, and if the runway path is offset toward the wall you have a problem. This is why we survey the whole envelope, not just the middle of the shop.

Door swing and overhead obstruction checklist

Overhead doors swing up on tracks that project six to eight inches inside the door opening. When the door is fully open, the lowest edge of the door panel sits between seven and eight feet above the slab depending on the door size. Measure this yourself on a day when you can open the door fully and hold a tape from slab to panel edge. Farm shop overhead doors are almost never installed with tracks that clear a full-rise scissor at full extension, which means you either accept partial-rise use with the door open or you commit to opening and closing the door around the lift cycle.

The workaround we recommend is to position the lift far enough back from the door that the vehicle can enter, drive to the lift, and then the door closes behind before the lift raises. That eats another few feet of shop depth but eliminates the door-swing conflict entirely. Sketch it out on paper before you commit to a lift location. Once the anchors are drilled you are living with wherever the base frame ended up.

Concrete slab thickness and scissor lift loading

The published minimum slab for most full-rise commercial scissor lift for automotive equipment is four inches of 3000-psi concrete with rebar. Farm shop slabs from the 1990s and earlier are often three-inch pours with no rebar, or thickened around the perimeter and thin in the middle. There is no reliable way to tell without either drilling a small core sample or bringing in a scan. If you are unsure, get it scanned before you buy the lift. The scan costs a couple hundred dollars. Ripping out and re-pouring a slab because a lift install failed costs thousands.

If your slab is thin, you have two paths. You can pour a thickened pad under the lift footprint, which is essentially a small concrete island with proper depth and rebar, tied into the surrounding slab. Or you can choose a portable scissor lift that spreads load over a wider footprint and does not require anchoring. Both are legitimate. We have installed thickened pads in farm shops around Waukee more than a dozen times without incident, and the total cost of a proper pad is usually less than a thousand dollars in materials.

Power and hydraulic power unit placement

Most farm shops have a subpanel with limited spare capacity. A commercial scissor lift for automotive service wants a dedicated 220-volt single-phase circuit at twenty amps. Confirm you have that capacity before you buy. If your panel is full, budget a couple hundred dollars for a small subpanel expansion. The alternative is running the lift on a shared circuit with your welder or your compressor, and you will trip breakers all winter. We have troubleshot that exact problem in three different Waukee shops in the last year.

Place the hydraulic power unit against a wall where you can easily access the reservoir cap, the pressure relief valve, and the electrical disconnect. Do not place it in a corner where you cannot swing a wrench. The unit needs periodic maintenance and you want it accessible. Most manufacturers ship with a fifteen-foot hydraulic hose which gives you flexibility in placement. Longer runs are available if you need them, but every additional foot of hose is another leak point.

Restoration and metal-fab workflow considerations

When you are welding under the vehicle on a scissor lift, ground the workpiece directly to the frame you are welding on, not to the lift. Grounding through the lift can arc across a safety-cam pivot or through a hydraulic cylinder, which does not damage the lift but can pit the surface of a component that is not designed for electrical passage. Every restoration shop we work with makes this mistake at least once. The rule is simple. Ground clamp goes on the vehicle metal you are burning to. Not the runway. Not the frame.

Sparks from a grinder or a plasma cutter fall down onto the pad rubber and runway surface. Keep a leather welding blanket over the runway when you are cutting, and sweep pad tops before you drive the car off. Slag on pad rubber shortens pad life and can create slip points on the next lift cycle. Small habit, big payoff over a decade of restoration work. We have replaced pads on farm-shop lifts prematurely more than once because of grinder slag glaze.

Final walk-through before you buy your scissor lift for automotive shop

Before you sign, verify every item on this checklist. Ceiling height at every point along the runway path. Door swing clearance in the open position. Slab thickness and rebar confirmed by scan or core. Electrical capacity at your panel. Space for the hydraulic power unit against a wall with maintenance access. Workflow for restoration or metal-fab that keeps grounds direct and pad tops clean. If any of those items are unresolved on the day the lift ships, you are borrowing trouble.
