Footprint: what a scissor actually takes on the floor

The floor footprint of a commercial pad scissor is smaller than most buyers expect. A typical mid-rise pad scissor sits on two runway rails roughly eighteen inches apart, with each rail about seventy-two inches long. The overall footprint when parked is roughly six feet long by three feet wide with the arms folded. That is remarkably compact compared to a two-post, which claims a footprint closer to twelve by twelve because of the columns and arm swing arcs.

The vehicle-over-lift footprint is another story. When a car is on the scissor at working height the outer dimensions of the car define the bay space you need, and that is usually eighteen to twenty feet long by seven or eight feet wide. The point of a scissor in an oil-change bay is that when the lift is down and the car is off, the bay is fully open — no columns, no tall structure, just runway rails a few inches off the floor. In a family garage with two two-posts already installed, a scissor as a third bay dramatically increases the usable open floor when the lift is not in use, because the down-position footprint is trivial.

Rise height and working clearance in inches

Real dimensions matter. A mid-rise pad scissor typically raises from three or four inches at rest to fifty-six to sixty inches at pad top. Add the vehicle’s frame-to-ground dimension — usually about fifteen inches on a sedan — and the vehicle undercarriage sits at roughly seventy-one to seventy-five inches from the floor. That gives a tech chest to shoulder height clearance under the vehicle, which is right for oil-change work.

A full-rise pad scissor extends higher — seventy to seventy-two inches at pad top — and puts the undercarriage closer to walk-under height. That is nice for transmission and exhaust work but overkill for oil service. For a family garage that expects the scissor to be a dedicated oil-change bay, the mid-rise unit is the right specification and the price advantage over full-rise is meaningful. Freight weight and pallet dimensions

A commercial pad scissor crated for shipment weighs between fifteen hundred and two thousand pounds and ships on a pallet roughly eighty-four inches long, forty-eight inches wide, and thirty to thirty-six inches tall. The power unit and control box usually ship on the same pallet. Some larger scissors ship in two crates — the main lift assembly on one, the ramps or accessories on a second — with a combined weight closer to twenty-two hundred pounds.

Those numbers matter because they determine what kind of truck can deliver, what kind of dock or forklift the receiver needs, and whether the freight class triggers surcharges. A common carrier truck with a lift gate can drop the pallet at the receiver’s door if the receiver has no forklift, but the lift gate has a weight limit that a heavy scissor may exceed. When we ship an oversize scissor we call the terminal ahead and confirm the equipment. When we deliver on our own truck we bring a forklift and set the pallet inside the shop where the owner wants it staged. Skipping that logistics step is where first-time buyers get a nasty freight surprise, and it is why we prefer to control the delivery when we can.

Forklift and unloading realities in a family garage

Most working shops have a forklift on site, and central Iowa family garages usually do — a small warehouse-style fork or a skid-steer with pallet forks. Either handles a scissor pallet cleanly if the forks are long enough to catch the full depth. A pallet forty-eight inches wide by eighty-four inches long wants forks at least forty-eight inches long to get all the way under without dumping the load.

If the shop does not have a fork we schedule the delivery on our truck and unload with our own equipment. If the shop wants to receive on a common carrier we ask about the fork situation ahead of time, and if the answer is no we recommend rescheduling to our truck. A dropped pallet in the parking lot means bent runway rails, damaged control box, or worse — and the freight claim process on damage discovered after signing is genuinely a nightmare. We take the customer through the exact unload plan before the crate ships, and the family garage confirms staging space and equipment. That coordination is invisible when it works and painful when it does not.

Bay staging and install sequencing

Installing a scissor next to two working two-posts is a sequencing job. The bay needs to be empty of vehicles and clear of tool carts on install day. The concrete anchors go in first, then the runway rails, then the mechanism assembly, then the hydraulic lines and power unit, then the control box wiring. Total install time is usually four to six hours on a bay we have already prepped, longer if we hit a concrete or electrical surprise.

For a family garage with active work in the adjacent bays, we coordinate the install date so it lands on the shop’s lightest day — often a Monday after weekend catch-up. We ask the shop to schedule oil-change appointments away from that bay for the day. If the electrical work is being done by an outside electrician, we sequence the electrical to land before we arrive. That planning is worth an extra phone call. Watching a bay sit empty because the electrician ran a wire on install day is a waste of everyone’s time. Concrete anchor spec and torque

The anchors on a commercial scissor are typically five-eighths inch diameter wedge anchors set roughly four and a half inches deep into 3,000 PSI concrete. Each rail wants four anchors, so a scissor is anchored at eight points total. Torque spec is around 120 foot-pounds per anchor, applied with a calibrated torque wrench, not a rattle gun.

We drill anchor holes with a hammer drill and a proper masonry bit, vacuum the dust from each hole before setting the anchor, and set with the wedge cone properly engaged before applying torque. Skipping the dust vacuum is a common shortcut that leaves the anchor loose in the hole; the anchor will hold at first but walk under load over a year or two. On a family garage install where the lift is expected to run for decades, cutting that corner is not acceptable. We follow the manufacturer’s install manual word by word and we hand the buyer the torque record when we leave. That documentation is the paper trail that keeps the install traceable in year fifteen when someone asks how it was set.

Twenty-year support after the crate lands
