Budget conversations with race teams almost always start with the equipment number and forget the install number. On a scissor lift for automotive service, the install cost can run 25 to 40 percent of the equipment cost by itself, depending on slab prep, electrical routing, and whether you need to relocate a floor drain. Start with a total budget number, then divide it between equipment, install, and consumables (fluids, adapters, and a starter parts kit).

Race teams that swap transmissions and rear ends need a full-rise because they need clearance to slide a transmission jack in under a lifted platform.

If your job mix is 70 percent setup and 30 percent driveline, the honest answer is usually to buy the full-rise, because the driveline days are the days that hurt if you are working on jack stands. Setup work is comfortable on any lift; driveline work is only comfortable when you have room to move. A scissor lift for automotive drivetrain work needs to be full-rise if you want the crew to move fast on transmission swap weeks.

Step 3: does your bay flow support a scissor

Race shops usually have a distinct bay flow: the car comes in the front, gets prepped, moves to the setup pad, and rolls out the back. A scissor lift for automotive service fits that flow well because the platform lowers flush and you can drive over it. But you have to plan the anchor location so that a driver rolling the car past the lift does not have to jog around a raised platform edge.

We usually recommend orienting the scissor with its long axis parallel to the bay traffic flow, so the driver enters and exits without a lateral shuffle. In West Des Moines shops, where bays are often narrow and deep, that orientation matters. Draw the flow on paper, mark the raised and lowered footprints, and confirm that a rolling toolbox has room past the platform when the lift is up.

Step 4: transmission service headroom

Transmission and driveline work on a scissor lift for automotive service demands specific headroom. To slide a transmission jack under a race car and raise it into position, you need the vehicle at about 55 to 65 inches of platform height, and you need enough overhead clear space to swing a torque wrench above the transmission tailshaft. That means at least 42 inches of vertical space between the car underbody and the ceiling.

Do the math with your actual bay. If your ceiling is 12 feet and your race car sits 48 inches tall, a fully raised scissor platform puts the roof of the car at 122 inches, leaving 22 inches of clearance. That is enough for the vehicle but tight for a raised transmission jack. Consider whether to spec a lower maximum platform height, or to run the transmission service at 55 inches instead of the maximum 74 inches. Either works; just plan for it.

Step 5: pick the brand and capacity

For a race shop, we recommend a Rotary or Challenger commercial-tier scissor over the home-tier BendPak or Atlas units. Race work is high-cycle and hard-use, and the commercial-tier scissors have thicker platform steel, tighter safety-cam intervals (2 inches versus 3 inches on the entry tier), and ALI Gold certification available on more SKUs. The delta is a few thousand dollars on equipment but the reliability difference is meaningful over a race season.

Capacity for most race cars is not the driver; a stock Cup or ARCA chassis weighs well under 4,000 pounds. But we still recommend 7,000-pound minimum capacity for the platform stiffness, not for the weight rating. Stiffer platforms deflect less under asymmetric load, and asymmetric load is what happens when you have a corner of the car unweighted for a control-arm swap.

Step 6: install and commissioning

Installation of a scissor lift for automotive race-shop use typically takes six to eight hours for a two-person crew, assuming the slab is prepped and the electrical is stubbed to the target location. We coordinate with your electrician if you have one on retainer, or we bring our own for turnkey. Commissioning includes a functional test at full load, safety-cam engagement verification, and a walkthrough of the daily pre-use inspection.
