Fork One: What Weight Are You Actually Lifting

The first fork in the decision tree is honest weight math. Not what the shop sometimes lifts, not the heaviest thing the shop might lift someday, but what the shop routinely lifts. For the Des Moines restoration owner, the honest number was a full-frame sedan or pickup somewhere between four thousand and forty-five hundred pounds curb weight. Add a partial engine and drivetrain and it’s under five thousand. That puts him solidly inside the range of a seven-thousand-pound-rated scissor lift for automotive shop use, with meaningful headroom.

Where owners overbuy on capacity is when they think about the outlier vehicle instead of the routine one. If the lift is a semi-permanent home for a project, the shop needs to be able to work around it — walk under it, roll a cart past it, keep the bay usable while the project drags.

A full-rise runway scissor takes more floor real estate and creates a bigger obstacle when it’s up and holding a project car. Fork Three: What’s Your Ceiling Height

Ceiling height gates the lift height. The Des Moines restoration shop had an eleven-foot ceiling, common in older commercial buildings around Iowa. That’s plenty for a mid-rise scissor lift raising a passenger car, but it starts to get interesting on a truck or SUV. Not disqualifying, but worth planning around.

The restoration owner’s ceiling made a mid-rise the easier call regardless. Even a full-size sedan on a mid-rise fits comfortably with plenty of room for overhead lighting and shop tools. That constraint would have flipped the other way in a shop with an eight-foot ceiling, where even a mid-rise starts to press vehicle roof height against the ceiling on some SUVs. Any ceiling under nine feet needs a specific measurement of the tallest vehicle the shop plans to lift plus the platform height, not a general rule.

Fork Four: Which Brand Fits the Restoration Use Case

For a scissor lift for automotive restoration work, the two brands we stock — Rotary and Challenger — both have suitable models. The choice usually comes down to parts pipeline and warranty terms rather than any meaningful difference in the machine itself. Rotary has a long history in the American shop equipment market and a deep parts catalog. Challenger has been building lifts for decades with a strong reputation for value on the same certification standard. Both are ALI Gold, both are built to hold a load safely for the fifteen or twenty years a restoration owner is going to keep the machine.

The brand history question sometimes matters to restoration owners who care about the story of the equipment as much as its function. Rotary traces back to Madison, Indiana with a manufacturing history that predates most of the cars our restoration customers are working on. We tell that story when it comes up, because it’s a real part of the brand’s identity. But for a working shop, brand history is not the deciding factor. Parts pipeline is. Both brands pass that test through our distribution.

Fork Five: Portable or Permanent

A subset of scissor lifts are marketed as portable, meaning the pad sections can be rolled around the shop floor and set up in different positions. That flexibility sounds attractive to a restoration shop, but there are real tradeoffs. Portable scissor lifts have lower capacity ratings and shorter lift heights than their anchored counterparts, and the pads have to be repositioned carefully every time to hit the vehicle’s lifting points. A shop that moves the lift once a week is fine. A shop that would move it daily is going to regret the choice.

Portable scissor lifts have their place, but not usually in a serious restoration shop’s primary bay.

Fork Six: Budget and Total Cost of Ownership

The Des Moines owner walked in with an equipment-only budget number that would have covered the mid-tier of the market comfortably. What we walked him toward was a total-cost-of-ownership number that included install, anchor kit, the ALI annual inspection, a spare seal kit, and one hydraulic cylinder rebuild in year five or six.
