Choosing a scissor lift for automotive restoration work is not the same decision as picking one for a quick-lube bay. Restoration shops in the Des Moines metro deal with everything from a rusted-out 1970s pickup to a modern truck with a transmission dropped on the bench, and the lift has to serve both jobs. Start with what you are actually lifting

Before you get talked into any specific model, list every vehicle you expect to service in the next five years. A restoration shop that is mostly rebuilding classic pickups sits under 6,000 pounds all day. If you are touching lifted 3/4-ton diesels, a modified SUV, or the occasional dually project, you are already over 7,500 pounds. Weight matters more on a scissor than on a two-post because the lift picks up on the frame or pinch welds, and cornering a load across a shorter footprint is less forgiving than a symmetric two-post pattern. Second, look at wheelbase. A short-wheelbase Bronco and a long-wheelbase crew cab need different pad positions, so the lifting pads have to slide.

Third, look at your shop floor. Most Des Moines metro restoration bays we install into have 4-inch reinforced concrete, which is fine, but 3-inch garage-grade slabs come up more than people expect. Confirm the pour before you buy — we have dug up too many surprises when the installer arrives. Undersize the lift and you spend the next decade parking half your jobs in the corner. Mid-rise sits around 42 to 48 inches, and it is a wheels-free waist-high working platform for brakes, rockers, and quick tire jobs. Low-rise pad lifts top out around 30 inches and only really suit body-panel and quick-service work.

Restoration shops are almost always full-rise buyers because a transmission service in a Des Moines metro shop means dropping a transfer case, cross member, and driveshaft, and none of that happens comfortably at 42 inches. When we spec a scissor lift for automotive restoration workflow, we default to full-rise unless the bay geometry forces mid-rise. Mid-rise wins one specific fight: it fits low-ceiling garages where a two-post will not clear. You raise it to any lock position, engage the lock, and the lift is sitting on steel — not on hydraulic pressure. That matters because you will spend more hours at a comfortable working height than fully extended, and hydraulic-only rests are not something we recommend leaving under a project car overnight.

Scissors, unlike two-posts, do not always anchor to the floor. Some full-rise models are portable and freestanding, some are surface-mount with anchor bolts, and some drop flush into a recessed pit. That decision changes your restoration bay layout more than any other single choice. Surface-mount is the most common install in a metro Des Moines shop we are touching, and it needs 4 inches of good 3,000 PSI concrete under the base. If the shop is older or the slab is unknown, we will core-sample before install.

But pit installs need to happen while the slab is still new or during a renovation, because retrofit pits are messy and expensive. If you are building a new bay from scratch, tell your GC before the slab is poured — you will drop conduit for cheap.
