Step one in build-out sequencing: pour the slab correctly

If you are building a new detached shop in Cedar Falls, the concrete slab is step one and it is not a step to rush. The minimum for a scissor lift for automotive service is four inches of 3,000 PSI mix. Trying to run a lift off the existing main house panel with a single homerun feeder often means undersized wire and a slow, warm-running pump motor. The subpanel is worth the extra electrical labor at build-out time — you will use every amp of it over the years.

Step three: measure ceiling clearance twice

The third step is measuring ceiling clearance, and it is the step that surprises the most first-time home garage buyers. A full-rise scissor at 74 inches plus a full-size pickup at 76 inches of vehicle height plus the raised tailgate takes about 13 feet of ceiling. Step five: mid-rise versus full-rise for restoration work

Restoration and metal work is undercar-heavy — you are welding, grinding, shaping, and fabricating under the rocker and inside the wheel arch. That means full-rise, so you can stand up under the vehicle without ducking. A mid-rise at 48 inches lets you sit on a creeper and work, but it does not let you stand up straight.
