The first collector we sold a scissor lift for automotive seasonal storage to in western Illinois came to us with a simple question and a 30-by-40 pole building that was still just concrete and pole holes. He wanted to store a passenger car up top and park a driver underneath, and he wanted to know if a scissor was the right answer for a private garage doing zero commercial work. We spent about a year walking through the build with him: slab pour, ceiling framing, panel and disconnect placement, model selection, delivery, install, and the first service call after his first winter. This is that year written up as one story, because the sequencing decisions matter more than the model number.

Why a scissor changed the storage plan

The original plan was a 4-post storage lift, which is the default recommendation for anyone stacking two cars. The problem was ceiling height. His western Illinois pole barn was going in with 12-foot side walls, which reads as plenty until you subtract truss depth, purlin height, and the actual finished-ceiling clear height. He was going to end up with about 10 feet of usable, and a 4-post with a stored vehicle on top eats every inch of that. When we walked the numbers on the phone, the top vehicle would clear the roof by about six inches, and there would be no way to open the hood.

A scissor lift for automotive service opened up a different plan: park the driver on the floor, put the stored car on the platform at a lower fixed height for the winter, and drop it flat when it was time to swap seasonally. He wouldn’t have full walk-under access to the stored car, but he’d have a clean flat storage platform that folded away when he wanted the whole bay back. For a two-car collector cycling between summer and winter drivers, that turned out to be exactly the right geometry for a scissor lift for automotive storage duty.

Sequencing the pole-barn build: concrete first, lift second

The single biggest mistake we see on collector builds is people ordering the lift before the slab is scheduled. In this case, we walked the concrete contractor through the anchor loads and the slab-thickness spec before the pour was even quoted. Minimum for the scissor unit he picked was 4 inches of 3,000 PSI, but because western Illinois has a full freeze-thaw season and the building would be unheated for weeks at a time, we spec’d 5 inches with rebar and a full moisture barrier.

The pour happened in September, cured for 28 days, and got a shot-blasted anchor zone marked before the surrounding floor was epoxied. That sequencing saved him about $600 in return trips: the concrete guys were already on-site, the anchor pattern was known, and the epoxy crew could mask off the lift footprint cleanly. The lift itself went on order two weeks after the pour, which put delivery in the first week of November: right on schedule for winter storage. It gets designed into the slab from the start, and the sequencing decides whether install day takes four hours or fourteen.

Site visit and lift selection

We drove out for a site visit before we quoted anything. This is where a lot of collectors save themselves from a mistake: the phone version of a garage never matches the walk-through version. In this case, the framer had put a header exactly where the platform’s rear column wanted to be, and we had to shift the anchor pattern about 14 inches forward to keep the platform clear of the header. That’s a five-minute conversation on site and a nightmare fifteen minutes into install day if nobody caught it.

We ended up specifying a mid-rise scissor rated for 7,000 pounds, with about 48 inches of lift height, which fit his passenger cars comfortably with margin. The alternative was a full-rise scissor lift for automotive storage duty, but he only needed the storage height, not walk-under access, so we saved him about $1,800 and a set of complexity by staying with the mid-rise geometry. We also spec’d extra-density lock ladders (about every 2 inches through the range) because he wanted the flexibility to store cars of different heights across seasons without wedging blocks under the pads.

Delivery day and forklift logistics

The lift shipped freight to the pole barn. In rural western Illinois that meant a semi with a lift gate, and a rented forklift on his end because the driver could get the crate to the curb but not into the barn. We coordinated a local forklift rental for a half day, which came in around $250 and saved everyone a herniated disc. Delivery happened on a Tuesday. Uncrating took about an hour. Anchor drilling and setting took another two. He drove his summer car onto the lift the same afternoon, and it went up and down through its full range on the first cycle without a leak or an alignment complaint. First season: lifting and lowering a stored car

The first winter, he raised the summer car about 40 inches, locked it into position, and parked his winter driver underneath at ground level. He never needed to touch the summer car for four months. In March, he dropped the summer car, moved the winter driver out, and swapped. The two things he noticed that first season, and worth passing on: one, he wished he had spec’d LED under-platform lighting up front rather than trying to install it after, because the stored car cast a shadow he wanted to solve. Two, the pole barn’s cold winter meant hydraulic fluid viscosity mattered more than he expected. On the first lift cycle in March, the lift was noticeably slower until the fluid warmed up. We ended up swapping to a synthetic hydraulic fluid better rated for Illinois winter temperatures, and that solved the sluggishness for the next season. Neither issue was a problem with the lift, but both are worth planning for on collector-storage installs.

First service call and shelf-stock parts

Fourteen months in, he called us because a lock pawl on one side was clicking oddly. This is the exact conversation we run with every collector: the pawl was fine, but the return spring had gotten stiff from cold cycling. Ten-dollar part, one-hour visit, and he was back in business. But it made us both wish he’d kept a small shelf-stock kit on hand.
