Why Fleet Shops Keep Landing on Scissors
The fleet operators we work with in Story County and around central Iowa share a common problem: they have bay space, but it is contested space. The same bay that services a van on Tuesday morning holds a trailer Tuesday afternoon. A two-post eats that bay permanently — the columns are there whether you are using them or not, and you cannot back a trailer over them. That is the whole appeal of a scissor. When it is down, the bay is a bay again. We have installed units that sit almost flush on a recessed pad and others that surface-mount with a low approach ramp, and in both cases the shop got its floor back the moment the vehicle rolled off.
The second reason is cycle time. Fleet work is repetitive. Configuration One: The Low-Rise Wheel-Service Scissor
The first configuration we put in front of fleet buyers is a low-rise or mid-rise unit — typically 6,000 to 7,000 lb capacity, lifting to roughly 24 to 48 inches depending on the model. It picks up on the frame or pinch welds, leaves the wheels hanging free, and is designed almost entirely around wheel and brake work. If ninety percent of your labor hours are tire rotation, brake pads, rotors, and suspension checks, this is the honest answer.
What people underestimate is how adjustable these are. A question we get on nearly every call is whether it is all the way down or all the way up with nothing in between. It is not. The mechanical safety locks engage roughly every two to two and a half inches through the travel, so you pick the height that puts the hub at your elbow rather than working overhead or hunched. For a tech doing forty rotations a week, that ergonomic difference shows up in fatigue and in how many years that tech stays with you. The tradeoff is honest: you are not walking underneath it, and you are not doing exhaust or transmission work. Low-rise units also tend to be the cheapest path into a real scissor lift for automotive service, and several models are portable enough to roll between bays with a pallet jack if your slab is flat and clean.
Configuration Two: The Full-Rise Drive-On Scissor
The second configuration is a full-rise scissor — usually 9,000 to 12,000 lb capacity, lifting to around 70 to 80 inches, with drive-on runways and a rolling jack or two so you can still get wheels off the ground. This is the unit that competes directly with a two-post, and for a lot of fleets it wins on floor plan alone.
The full-rise gives you standing headroom underneath, which means oil changes, driveline inspections, fuel filter service, and exhaust work all come back on the table. With integrated rolling jacks you get the wheels-free position too, so you have not given up the tire work you bought the first configuration for. The tradeoff is footprint and cost: a full-rise scissor lift for automotive service takes a bigger slab commitment, usually wants a deeper bay, and lands meaningfully higher on price than the low-rise. There is also the runway question — the runways sit between you and the underside of the vehicle in a way two-post arms do not, so a few center-of-vehicle jobs get awkward. When a fleet manager asks us which one, the deciding question is almost always the same: what percentage of your annual hours involve going underneath? Under twenty percent, take the low-rise and keep the cash. Over forty percent, buy the full-rise once and stop thinking about it. Concrete, Power, and the Install Details Nobody Asks About Until Install Day
Every scissor we set is only as good as what it is anchored to. For most low-rise and mid-rise units we want a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, cured, with no cracks or expansion joints running through the anchor pattern. Full-rise models commonly want more — five to six inches is a safer number, and some manufacturers specify it outright. If your building is a converted pole barn or a slab poured for storage rather than service, we will tell you before we quote, not after we show up with a hammer drill.
Power is the other one. Most units run a 220V single-phase power unit, though three-phase is available on the larger commercial models and is worth having if your building already carries it. You will also need an air supply on many models — the mechanical lock release is frequently pneumatic, and shops are constantly surprised that a hydraulic lift needs a shop air line. Plan the drop before the concrete guys leave. Finally, think about recess. A recessed scissor lift for automotive work sits nearly flush and is beautiful to work around, but recessing means saw-cutting or forming a pit, which is a concrete contractor’s job and adds lead time. Surface mount is faster and cheaper; you just live with a small ramp and a bump in the floor.
Financing Terms: What Small Fleets Actually Sign
We are asked about payments more than almost anything else, and the honest framing is this: a lift is one of the few shop purchases where the monthly payment is usually smaller than the labor value it unlocks in the first week of the month. Equipment financing for lifts typically runs 24 to 60 months. Shorter terms carry a lower total cost and a higher monthly number; sixty-month terms bring the payment down to something most small fleets barely notice in their operating budget but you pay more over the life of the note.
Structures vary. Straight equipment loans put the lift on your balance sheet and you own it outright at the end. Capital leases — often with a nominal buyout at term — behave similarly and sometimes get you better first-year tax treatment; ask your accountant about Section 179, because for a lot of the shops we serve the deduction covers a meaningful chunk of the purchase in year one. True operating leases exist but are less common for lifts because a lift lasts twenty-plus years and you want to own it. Down payments generally land in the ten to twenty percent range for newer businesses and can be zero for established shops with credit history. Watch for documentation fees, prepayment penalties, and whether installation and freight can be rolled into the financed amount. Budgeting Beyond the Purchase Price
The sticker is not the spend. Freight on a scissor is real, especially for full-rise models that ship on a heavy pallet and need a forklift or a liftgate at delivery. If you do not have a forklift on site, tell us during quoting so we schedule accordingly — we have shown up to plenty of sites where a machine was assumed and not present, and that turns into a return trip nobody wants to pay for.
Installation runs a range depending on whether you are surface-mounting or recessing, how far the power drop has to run, and what shape the slab is in. Anchors, shims, and leveling are included in what we do; concrete repair is not. Then there is the ongoing side, which is genuinely modest but not zero. Annual inspection is required under ANSI/ALI guidance and is cheap insurance against a much larger problem. Hydraulic fluid changes, lock pivot lubrication, and cylinder seal service are the recurring items on a scissor lift for automotive use, and cylinder seals are the one that eventually gets everybody — we rebuild leaking cylinders constantly and it is far cheaper than replacement. Budget a few hundred dollars a year for maintenance and a slightly bigger number every seven to ten years for a cylinder or power unit refresh.
