Real Bay Dimensions and What They Mean

The dealership bay we surveyed measured 14 feet 2 inches wide by 26 feet 6 inches deep, with 13-foot ceilings and a 6-inch concrete slab poured in 2012 (they had the pour records). For a scissor lift for automotive inspection work at full-rise height, those are close to ideal numbers. The width comfortably clears a Rotary X14 or Challenger DX77 with the platforms extended, and 13 feet of ceiling means the tallest F-250 crew cab they inspect will still have four feet of headroom over the platforms fully raised.

Depth is the metric most shops underspec. A scissor lift for automotive inspection isn’t just the lift footprint — it’s the lift plus enough approach room to drive on straight, plus enough behind for the tech to walk around and open a hood. On a full-rise X14, the platforms are about 78 inches long; add 15 feet of drive-on approach and 4 feet of walk-behind clearance and you want a minimum 24-foot bay depth. His 26 feet 6 inches was ideal. If you’re under 22 feet, we’d steer you to a pad-style scissor instead of a drive-on and change the workflow accordingly.

Concrete Requirements for Inspection-Duty Cycles

Full-rise scissor lifts for automotive service require 4 inches minimum of 3,000 PSI concrete for their anchor rating, but for inspection duty — where the lift cycles up and down 15-25 times per day, five days a week — we push customers to 6 inches of 4,000 PSI when they have the choice. Cycle count matters. A residential scissor lift for automotive hobby use might see 200 cycles a year; the dealership we specced this for will hit 4,000+ cycles annually. Anchor holes see that many load-release-load transitions, and a marginal slab will eventually crack around the anchor.

His 2012 slab tested (we brought a Windsor probe) at just over 4,000 PSI, 6 inches thick, so we cleared him for the X14 anchor spec without reservation. If you’re a shop with an older slab and you’re unsure — most southwest Iowa shops built before 1990 have unknown mix and thickness — the honest answer is: cut a 4-inch core out of a corner, measure it, and get a compressive-strength test. Power Requirements and Panel Load

A scissor lift for automotive service typically runs on a single-phase 220V, 30-amp circuit. The X14 pulls about 22 amps at motor start, then settles into the 12-15 amp range under load. The dealership’s existing panel had a spare 30-amp double-pole slot, so no service upgrade was needed. Where we’ve seen surprises is in shops that already have a compressor, tire changer, and welder on the same subpanel — you’ll get nuisance breaker trips when the lift and compressor start simultaneously.

The other spec that catches people off guard is the disconnect. Iowa electrical code requires a locking disconnect within sight of the lift for anything over 240V. Most licensed local electricians know this cold, but we’ve had shops try to save $180 by running a plug-and-cord rig, which is not code-compliant and will fail inspection. Budget the disconnect, budget an electrician for the panel work (we don’t do the panel side ourselves), and plan for that to add roughly $600-$1,200 to the total install depending on run length and access.

Workflow: Why a Scissor Beats a 2-Post Here

For state inspections specifically, a scissor lift for automotive service has three real advantages over a 2-post. First, no arm setup: on inspection cycles you don’t want a tech spending 90 seconds threading arms under pinch welds on every vehicle. Drive on, hit up, walk around. Second, the platforms give you a stable place to stand or rest a light — inspectors constantly reference under-body components against a checklist, and having a flat platform edge is faster than a 2-post’s dangling arm. Third, no column obstruction: the tech walks a full circle around the raised vehicle without dodging posts, which shaves 15-20 seconds off every under-body check.

Across a five-day week doing 20 inspections per day, those seconds add up to roughly one full inspection slot recovered every day — meaningful revenue when state contracts pay per completed inspection. Total shop downtime for that one bay: roughly 60 working hours, most of which is over the weekend.

Bigger dealership shops with a covered service drive can sometimes stay operational on adjacent bays throughout the install. His shop did — three bays kept running while ours went in, which meant zero lost revenue over the install window. That’s the argument for phased installs on multi-bay shops: never take down more than one bay at a time. Ongoing Maintenance and Parts Support

Scissor lifts for automotive inspection duty need more frequent PM than home-garage units, simply because of cycle count. We recommend a 90-day PM interval on any inspection-duty scissor: check hydraulic fluid level and cleanliness, inspect cables and pulleys for wear, verify all safety locks engage and release cleanly, grease pivot points, and torque-check anchor bolts. Annually, replace the hydraulic filter and pull a fluid sample for analysis. Every 3-5 years on high-cycle installations, plan for a cable set replacement — the lifting cables have a finite fatigue life and shouldn’t be pushed past manufacturer intervals.
