An EV specialty shop owner in Waterloo emailed us a spreadsheet of six model numbers and asked which scissor lift for automotive suspension work he should buy. Every unit on his list claimed 6,000 to 9,000 pounds of capacity and every one had a photo that looked more or less identical. What the spreadsheet didn’t show him was rise height, platform length, drive-through width, lock increment, or whether the thing could get a wheel off the ground at all — and those are the specs that decide whether shock and strut jobs go smoothly or become a daily fight. Myth: Capacity Is the Spec That Matters Most

Capacity is the number that gets printed largest and it’s the number owners fixate on. It’s also rarely the binding constraint. A shop servicing passenger EVs and hybrids is dealing with vehicles in the 3,800 to 5,600 pound range, and even a loaded three-row electric crossover rarely crosses 6,500. Almost any commercial-grade unit clears that. Where shops actually get burned is rise height and platform geometry, because those determine whether a technician can stand upright under a coilover or has to work on their knees with a floor jack under the control arm.

Battery-pack vehicles do change the conversation in one specific way: weight distribution. An EV carries a huge portion of its mass low and centered between the axles, so the load on a scissor platform is more evenly spread than on a front-engine truck. That’s generally good news for the lift. What it complicates is lift point selection, since factory pinch-weld pads and jacking points on EVs are often reinforced in specific spots and nowhere else. A capacity number tells you nothing about whether your pad kit reaches those points. That’s the real spec question on a scissor lift for automotive suspension work.

Rise Height: The Number That Decides Your Day

Mid-rise scissor models typically top out somewhere in the 40 to 50 inch range. Full-rise commercial models reach 70 inches and up. Both get called a scissor lift for automotive service in marketing copy, and that’s where the confusion starts. At 45 inches of rise, a technician of average height is working seated on a stool or bent forward. At 72 inches, they’re standing straight with a shock in one hand and an impact in the other. For a shop doing suspension and shock replacement as bread-and-butter work, that difference compounds across every job, every day.

The Waterloo shop owner had two mid-rise units on his list purely because they were cheaper, and he’d mentally justified it by saying he could always jack the car higher. You can’t — a mid-rise is a mid-rise. We asked him to price out the time cost: if a bent-over strut job takes twenty extra minutes and he does eight a week, that’s over two hundred hours a year of labor he’s giving away to save a few thousand up front. That math changed his shopping list in about ninety seconds. Buy for the work you actually do, not for the invoice total.

Myth: All Scissor Lifts Block Wheel Access

This one comes up constantly and it’s half true. A conventional full-platform scissor supports the vehicle under the frame or pinch welds, which means the wheels hang free — that’s exactly what you want for suspension work. Where the myth comes from is drive-on scissor designs that support the vehicle by its tires, common in alignment configurations. Those are excellent for alignment and terrible for pulling a strut assembly, unless the model includes rolling jacks that let you lift the axle off the runway.

So the spec to check isn’t “scissor versus two-post,” it’s whether the model is a frame-engaging design or a wheel-engaging design. For a shop whose core work is shocks, struts, control arms, and bushings, frame-engaging is the answer nearly every time. If you also want alignment capability in the same bay, you’re looking at a drive-on scissor with integrated rolling jacks and turnplates, which is a different price tier and a different install. We’d rather you know that distinction before you buy than discover it the first Monday you own the thing.

Lock Increments and Why Two-and-a-Half Inches Matters

People assume these lifts are all-the-way-down or all-the-way-up. They’re not. Mechanical safety locks engage roughly every two to two and a half inches through the full travel, and you choose which one to set on. That’s a genuine advantage for suspension work, where you often want the vehicle just high enough to get the wheels off and the spring compressor swinging free, but not so high that you’re reaching overhead with a loaded coil spring in your hands.

It also matters when you’re servicing a low car. An EV shop sees plenty of low-slung sedans with tight ground clearance, and the approach angle onto the platforms is a real consideration. Fine lock increments let a technician set the car at a comfortable height for underbody work and then drop it two clicks for a torque-to-spec pass with the suspension loaded. Compare lock spacing between the models you’re considering — some designs have coarser increments, and coarse increments mean you’re always working at a height that’s slightly wrong. It’s a small line on a spec sheet with an outsized effect on how a scissor lift for automotive service feels in daily use.

Platform Length, Drive-Through Width, and Real Bay Fit

Platform length determines which wheelbases the lift supports safely. Short mid-rise platforms are fine for sedans and compact crossovers but leave a long-wheelbase van or extended-cab pickup with too much overhang. If your Waterloo shop is EV-focused today but you know a customer’s F-150 Lightning is coming in next month, size for the longer vehicle. Extension pads help, but they don’t turn a short platform into a long one, and stacking adapters to make it work is how vehicles end up unstable.

Drive-through width and the underside profile of the frame matter too. Owners look at photos and can’t tell how wide the clear space is beneath the platforms, which is a fair complaint — the photos never show it well. Ask for the actual dimension between the base frame rails and compare it to your tire width and your track width. Then measure your bay including the walkway you need on both sides, because a technician who has to squeeze past a raised vehicle sideways with a strut in their arms is a safety problem waiting to happen. Myth: A Cheaper Import Unit Is the Same Machine

Price gaps between brands exist for reasons you can see if you know where to look. Cylinder quality, seal specification, hose routing, weld quality on the scissor arms, and the material and hardness of the slide blocks all differ. We rebuild leaking cylinders on budget units regularly — it’s a real chunk of our service work — and the pattern is consistent: cheap seals and rough bore finishes fail early. Parts availability is the other half. When a proprietary import cylinder needs replacement and lead time is eight weeks from overseas, that bay is dark for two months.

That’s why we point commercial shops toward Rotary and Challenger, and home garages toward BendPak and Atlas. Not brand loyalty — parts logistics. We stock and source components for those lines, so a failed cylinder or a worn lock pawl is a few days, not a quarter. How We’d Narrow Six Models Down to Two

Here’s the filter we ran on that spreadsheet, in order. First, cut anything under 65 inches of rise, because the shop’s core work is suspension and standing height is non-negotiable. Second, cut anything with a platform shorter than the longest vehicle he services. Third, cut anything frame design that engages wheels rather than the frame, since strut work needs the wheels free. Fourth, cut anything without documented North American parts stock. Six models became two, and the remaining decision was budget tier and lead time.
