Choosing the Right Scissor for Storage Duty
For seasonal storage we spec’d a 7,000-pound-capacity full-rise scissor lift for automotive service with mechanical locks at multiple heights, drive-on platform, wide track for classic-car wheelbase and width, and a hydraulic system with a check-valve holding circuit. The check-valve holding circuit is the underrated feature in this application because it isolates the cylinders from any slow-drip issue elsewhere in the hydraulic system when the lift is parked on the mechanical locks. Some cheaper scissors rely on the hydraulic seal itself to hold the load between mechanical locks, which is fine for daily service and problematic for months-long storage.
We steered him away from a mid-rise because the storage bay had 14-foot sidewalls and he wanted maximum clearance underneath the raised car to stack a second car below. The full-rise gave him roughly 76 inches of clearance under the raised platform, which is enough for any of his floor cars to pass under without concern. A mid-rise would have given him 48 inches, which does not clear the roofline of a first-gen Camaro. That single measurement decision was the difference between a working storage stack and an expensive lift that stores one car. Match the working height to the storage math before you order.
Electrical Circuit Sizing and the Phase Question
His garage was already wired 200-amp service with a subpanel in the bay he wanted the lift in. The subpanel had two open 30-amp double-pole breaker slots. The commercial three-phase option is faster and slightly quieter but almost never justifies the additional install cost in a home-garage application unless the panel is already three-phase for other reasons.
Install Day and the First Lift Cycle
Install day was late April, sunny and mild, garage doors open, coffee on the workbench. We rolled in with the lift on a lift-gate truck and had it staged on rolling dollies inside the bay within an hour. The concrete had been core-tested at six inches with rebar during the original garage build, so no slab work was needed. We anchored the lift frame to the slab with wedge anchors on a factory-specified pattern, ran the hydraulic lines between the power unit and the platform cylinders, and connected the electrical. Leveling to the manufacturer tolerance took another hour.
Load-test was done with a calibrated 6,000-pound weight before the collector’s own cars ever touched the lift.
