The Cedar Rapids owner had a 4Runner, a Tacoma, and a project 1996 Bronco he was slowly building. What he wanted was a scissor lift for automotive maintenance that could take the Bronco to full rise for a slow differential swap and drivetrain refresh, and still be there for oil changes on the daily drivers. We looked at three lifts: Rotary MR6 mid-rise, Rotary XA14 full-rise, and Challenger DX77 full-rise. He picked the DX77 for the 14,000-lb capacity and the drive-over ramp geometry, and because he wanted the option to lift a friend’s diesel dually someday without regretting the choice.
The DX77 palletizes to just under 2,900 lb and ships from Kentucky on common freight. Total shipping distance to Cedar Rapids was about 480 miles, one lane change through Illinois, three-day transit standard. From order confirmation to freight pickup was six business days; from pickup to Cedar Rapids delivery was three business days. Coordinating the truck route to a rural driveway
Rural Iowa freight delivery is not the same problem as commercial dock delivery, and any dealer who quotes it the same way is going to surprise a customer. The trucking company’s dispatcher wants to know: what’s the last quarter mile of road, is there a mailbox on the shoulder that a 53-foot trailer can clear, is there a turnaround at the property, and is there any gravel or soft ground the truck will need to sit on for unloading. We knew this going in and had planned for the pallet to come off the truck at the apron and get moved to the building by a rental forklift we’d staged the night before. That single call to dispatch is the difference between a smooth delivery and a driver refusing to leave the pallet where you need it. Never assume the delivery driver will improvise — assume he won’t, and plan every step.
Unloading in a residential driveway
The truck arrived at 10:30 on a Thursday. Liftgate down, pallet on the gate, gate to the ground, pallet jack under the skid, roll it eight feet onto the concrete apron. Total on-driveway time was under twenty minutes. The rental forklift was already staged next to the apron — we’d picked it up from a rental yard the previous afternoon for a half-day rate. Forks under the shipping skid, tilt back, drive it thirty yards to the pole building, set it inside on the layout marks.
What could have gone wrong: the pallet jack tipping on the seam between the apron and the driveway, the liftgate motor stalling under 2,900 lb of load, the driver arriving without a working liftgate at all. We’ve seen all three happen on prior builds, and the fix for each starts with confirming carrier equipment before pickup. Concrete verification before install
Before the install day, we asked the owner for the original concrete spec from the pole building. He didn’t have it. His builder had passed away two years earlier and the paperwork was in a filing cabinet none of us wanted to dig through. So we cored a two-inch sample from an inconspicuous corner of the pad the day before install. Install day sequence and timing

Break-down: 8am arrival and unloading of remaining tools, 8:30 to 10:30 was anchor drilling and setting, 10:30 to noon was frame assembly and deck placement, lunch, 1pm to 2:30 was hydraulic plumbing and bleed, 2:30 to 4 was electrical, 4 to 4:30 was first cycle and lock check, 4:30 to 5 was load test and owner walkthrough.
The electrical was the surprise. The owner’s existing shop had a 60-amp subpanel that we’d been told was fine on the phone. On-site inspection showed a 40-amp breaker actually feeding the run, which was fine for a mid-rise but too small for the DX77’s 30-amp draw with any margin. We shut down, called the local electrician the owner had used before, and had a 60-amp breaker in and hot within ninety minutes. That’s the kind of variable no seller can pre-diagnose over the phone, and it’s why we build a two-hour buffer into every install day. Do not schedule an install day tight against a customer’s plans — always leave slack for the electrician.
First differential job on the new deck
The first job on the finished lift was the reason he bought it: a differential fluid service on the 4Runner and a full differential rebuild on the Bronco project. The 4Runner went on the deck first for a shakedown. Drive up the ramps, chock the front tires just because he wanted to, cycle to full rise, engage the safety locks at the top, walk under with a drain pan. Fluid drained clean, magnetic plug came out with normal fuzz, refill through the fill plug, done in about forty minutes.
The Bronco was the real test. Frame contact points, full rise, locks engaged, and the owner spent three days pulling the rear axle for a full ring-and-pinion rebuild. On day two, the shop lost power for an hour during a thunderstorm. The lift didn’t move — that’s what the mechanical safety locks are for. The car sat exactly where it was, engaged on the lock rung, until power came back. This is the specific reason a scissor lift for automotive restoration work is worth the money over jack stands. First, they underestimate how much coordination the day-of delivery actually requires.
