An RV and trailer service shop northeast of Cedar Rapids called us in the spring wanting a scissor lift for automotive work they’d been doing on jack stands for eleven years. Their bread and butter was trailer axles and wheel bearing service — brake drums off, races pressed, seals replaced, repack, torque, done. They didn’t need a two-post. They needed something that got a tow vehicle or a light-duty truck up to a comfortable working height fast, then got completely out of the way when a 34-foot fifth wheel needed to roll through the same bay. We installed it in April. Here’s what the first year actually looked like, including the part nobody asks about until they’re selling: what the thing is worth on the used market.

Why an RV Shop Bought a Scissor Instead of a Two-Post

The bay geometry made the decision. Their building is a converted implement shed with 13-foot sidewalls and a 14-foot overhead door, which sounds like plenty of room until you remember that a two-post lift needs columns on both sides of the vehicle and an overhead beam or a floor plate. Columns in that bay would have meant permanently losing the drive-through lane they use to pull travel trailers in for roof and slide-out work. A full-rise scissor sits low, mounts to the slab, and when it’s down the bay is a bay again. That’s the whole argument, and for a shop that splits its week between RVs and the trucks that pull them, it’s a strong one.

The second factor was the work itself. Wheel bearing service, brake jobs, suspension inspections, and driveline lube don’t require access to the rocker panels or the doors. They require the wheels off the ground and the underside reachable. A scissor lift for automotive service delivers exactly that. Where a scissor struggles is body work, exhaust fabrication that runs the length of the vehicle, and anything needing an unobstructed centerline — the mechanism lives under the middle of the car. This shop doesn’t do that work. If they did, we’d have talked them into a two-post and figured out the trailer lane some other way. The right lift is the one that matches what actually rolls through your door, not the one with the best spec sheet.

The Install: Slab, Power, and One Surprise

We core-drilled and checked the slab before anything came off the truck. The shed floor was poured in two pours with a cold joint running right where the operator wanted the lift centered — we found it with a hammer and a chalk line and shifted the layout 22 inches so no anchor landed within six inches of that joint. That’s a five-minute conversation that prevents a cracked slab two years later. Concrete depth came in at just over five inches of decent 3,500 PSI material, which is adequate for a full-rise unit in the 7,000 to 10,000 lb class. Anything thinner and we’d have been quoting a cut-and-pour pad.

Power was the surprise. The shop had 240V single-phase available but the nearest circuit was shared with a compressor that cycled constantly, and the voltage sag was enough to make the power unit unhappy under load. An electrician ran a dedicated 20-amp circuit before we energized. We see this constantly in older Iowa farm buildings converted to shops — the wiring was sized for lights and a grinder, not a 3 HP hydraulic pump pulling starting current. Budget for it. If you’re planning a scissor lift for automotive use in a converted building, get an electrician to walk the panel with you during the quote stage, not the day the freight arrives. It’s the single most common reason an install day turns into an install week around here.

First Six Months: Wheel Bearing Work at Chest Height

The measurable change was cycle time on bearing jobs. On stands, their process was jack, crib, block, verify, then work sitting on a creeper with a drop light. Every hub took a trip to the bench and back. With the lift, the tech sets the vehicle at whatever lock position puts the hub at chest height and the whole job happens standing up. The shop’s own tracking put a two-side bearing and seal replacement on a 3/4-ton tow vehicle at roughly 40 minutes faster than before. Over a busy month of pre-trip inspections in April and May, that added up to real invoiced hours.

The adjustable lock positions matter more than people expect. A good scissor doesn’t just go all the way down or all the way up — it locks in increments of roughly two to two-and-a-half inches through its travel, so you pick a height instead of accepting one. For bearing service that means the hub sits where your hands want it. For a low-slung car it means you’re not overextending the arms to clear a rocker. We walk every customer through finding and hearing those locks on install day, because a tech who trusts the mechanical locks stops relying on the hydraulics to hold load, and that’s the habit that keeps people safe. Hydraulics hold pressure. Locks hold weight. Different jobs.

The Maintenance Nobody Budgets For

A scissor has more moving contact points than a two-post: pivot pins, bushings, slide blocks or rollers at the ends of the arms, and the hydraulic cylinder mounted in a tight, dirty spot. In an RV and trailer shop that means grease, road salt, and axle grit end up in all of it. Our recommendation for that Cedar Rapids shop was monthly grease at every pin, a quarterly look at the slide blocks for uneven wear, and a hard look at the cylinder rod and hose routing twice a year. They stayed on it. At the twelve-month inspection everything was within spec and the fluid was still clean.

The thing that gets shops in trouble is the cylinder. Because it’s buried in the mechanism, a weeping seal doesn’t announce itself the way a two-post cylinder leak does — it drips into the pit of the lift where nobody looks. We’ve rebuilt plenty of leaking cylinders on scissor and mid-rise units, including a fair number on off-brand equipment where the customer’s first symptom was slow drift-down under load. If your scissor lift for automotive service starts settling an inch over ten minutes with a vehicle on it, stop using it and call somebody. That’s either a cylinder seal, a check valve, or a fitting, and all three are fixable — but not while you’re standing under it. What a Used Scissor Lift for Automotive Work Actually Sells For

Here’s the honest part. We buy, sell, and move used equipment, and the resale market treats scissors differently than posts. A clean, name-brand two-post that’s ten years old still commands a meaningful percentage of new because everybody wants one, the design is simple, and parts are everywhere. A used scissor is a narrower market. Buyers worry about the cylinder, the pivot wear, and whether the control system still has support. So expect the resale curve to be steeper — a well-maintained unit in the middle of its life typically trades in the range of a third to a half of new pricing, and off-brand units with no parts support sometimes trade for scrap-plus-freight.

Two things move a used scissor’s value more than anything else. First, brand and parts availability: if we can look up a seal kit, a power unit, and a set of slide blocks by model number, the lift is worth real money. If the manufacturer is gone and nothing interchanges, it’s a gamble and buyers price it that way. Second, documentation. A binder with the annual inspection records, the install paperwork, and the anchor torque log makes a buyer comfortable, and comfortable buyers pay more. We told that Cedar Rapids shop to keep the binder from day one, and they have. When they eventually upgrade to a second bay, that lift will sell in a week — locally, to another Iowa shop, probably with us in the middle of the transaction.

Flush-Mount vs. Surface-Mount and Its Effect on Resale

The shop chose surface-mount, and for resale that was the right call even though flush-mount looks better. A surface-mount unit bolts to the slab and comes back up with a hammer drill and a couple of hours of labor. A flush-mount scissor sits in a recessed pit you cut into the concrete, which gives you a dead-flat floor when the lift is down — genuinely nicer for rolling toolboxes and trailer tongues across. But that pit is a permanent modification to your building, and removing the lift leaves you with a hole to fill.

From a buyer’s perspective, a pulled flush-mount unit is fine — it re-installs into a new pit anywhere. From a seller’s perspective, the removal is more expensive and you’re left patching your own floor. So the calculus is: if you own the building and expect to keep the lift for its full service life, flush-mount is a legitimate upgrade with real day-to-day benefit. If you lease, or if you suspect you’ll outgrow the equipment in five years, stay surface-mount. We’ve had this conversation with dozens of shops across eastern Iowa and it usually comes down to lease length. One more wrinkle: a flush-mount pit needs drainage consideration in a building where wash water or snowmelt runs across the floor. Standing water in the pit rusts the mechanism from underneath, and we’ve condemned units for exactly that.

Sizing, Capacity, and What We’d Recommend Today

For a shop working passenger vehicles and half-ton to three-quarter-ton tow rigs, we generally point people at a full-rise unit in the 9,000 to 10,000 lb range rather than a 6,000 lb mid-rise. The mid-rise is cheaper and it’s a great tire-and-brake tool, but it tops out around chest height on most vehicles and it doesn’t let a tech stand fully upright underneath. If you’re doing a full day of wheel bearing, brake, and driveline work, that difference in posture is the difference between a productive Friday afternoon and a sore back. Runway length matters too — check the wheelbase of the longest thing you service, not the average.

The other honest recommendation: if your bay can accommodate columns and your work includes anything at the vehicle’s centerline, a two-post is usually the better dollar-per-capability buy. We’ve told plenty of customers that a scissor lift for automotive service costs more for less versatility in their specific situation, and we’d rather lose that sale than install the wrong lift.
