A three-phase unit is available on most models as an option, and it draws less amperage per leg, but it is only worth ordering if you already have three-phase service in the bay. Bringing three-phase into a light-industrial rental is not a project a solo operator wants to fund.
For this east-central Iowa install, we ordered the single-phase power unit. It runs off the existing 240-volt outlet with a properly sized breaker and disconnect. Startup amperage is higher than run amperage, so the breaker sizing has to account for the inrush, and we spec that with the customer’s electrician before we ship. A right-sized breaker means the lift never trips on a routine lift cycle, and the electrician does not have to come back.
The disconnect and the hard-wire question
Code in most Iowa jurisdictions requires a disconnect within sight of the equipment for a scissor lift for automotive service. That is usually a lockable disconnect box mounted near the power unit, wired from the panel through appropriate conduit. Some smaller lifts ship with a cord and plug that can drop into a standard 220 outlet, but for a commercial-duty scissor in a rented bay we recommend hard-wiring to a disconnect regardless of what the manufacturer allows.
The reason is inspection. If the shop is ever inspected for insurance or for a lease renewal, a hard-wired disconnect signals a professional install and a lift that is not going to be an insurance problem. We coordinate with the customer’s electrician on install day so the electrical work is completed while our crew is on the runway. That is one hour of coordination that saves a return visit and a delayed startup. Small logistics wins.
Slab and anchor prep in a rented bay
The bay this mechanic rented was originally used for light manufacturing, and the slab was five inches of 3,000 psi concrete, which is well over the minimum spec for a scissor lift for automotive tire and brake work. We still hammer-tested it before we set anchors. The test came back solid, and we drilled and set sleeve anchors according to the manufacturer template. If the slab had failed the test, we would have proposed anchor pads before we shipped the lift.
Anchor location matters when the tenant may eventually move.
