Overlanding builders in eastern Nebraska are increasingly asking for a scissor lift for automotive service in their home shops, and the reason is straightforward: a fully built 4Runner or Tacoma with roof tent, drawers, and armor sits taller and heavier than the stock rig, and working under it on jack stands stops being fun after the first six months. We are Auto Lift Services, based in Ames, Iowa, and this case study walks through a recent install we completed for an eastern Nebraska overlander, from the financing structure through the first oil change on the new lift. Background: the build and the shop
The customer is an overlanding builder who runs a small custom-build side business out of his home shop, a 40 by 50 pole building on his property in eastern Nebraska. He mostly works on his own Tacoma and 4Runner but also builds one or two customer rigs a year. When he called us, he had been running his shop on jack stands and a floor jack for four years and had reached the point where the height and time of every service was killing his weekend availability.
His main criteria were: a scissor lift for automotive service that could handle a fully built 5,500-pound Tacoma, a lift he could still park a smaller car under for storage, and a payment plan that would not tank his cash flow during the winter months when customer work slows. Those three requirements narrowed the search quickly to a full-rise commercial scissor with financing.
Sizing the lift for a built rig
Overlanding rigs are deceptively heavy. A stock Tacoma weighs about 4,400 pounds; add a rooftop tent (150 pounds), a bumper and winch (250 pounds), sliders (100 pounds), a drawer system with fridge (200 pounds), armor and skids (150 pounds), and larger tires and wheels (100 pounds), and you are at roughly 5,350 pounds curb weight before passengers or fuel. That is close enough to the 6,000-pound rating of an entry scissor to make us uncomfortable, so we spec’d a 7,000-pound scissor lift for automotive service with a longer platform to handle the extended wheelbase of a crew-cab Tacoma.
Platform length matters here. A stock scissor platform runs 60 to 68 inches, and a Tacoma double-cab wheelbase is 127 inches, which barely fits. We spec’d a 74-inch platform to give the customer 3 to 4 inches of margin at each wheel. That extra platform length adds about 10 percent to the equipment cost but eliminates the risk of a tire hanging off the edge.
Financing structure: 0% APR for 12 months
The financing conversation was where this deal came together. The customer was cash-flow-tight because he had just poured a new heated slab in his shop. We ran him through our lender for 0% APR financing for 12 months on qualified purchases. He put a modest down payment and financed the balance across 12 equal monthly payments with no interest, which fit his monthly budget without dipping into his emergency fund.
The lender is a Midwest-based business lender we have worked with for years, and approval typically comes back within two business days for buyers with reasonable credit. If you cannot qualify for the 0% offer, extended terms at 6 to 9 percent are also available through the same lender. For an overlanding builder or hobbyist, spreading the cost across the year is often the difference between buying now versus waiting another season.
Install day: what actually happened
Install day was a Thursday. Our crew arrived at 8 a.m. with the scissor, mounting hardware, and hydraulic fluid. The customer’s slab was fresh (6 inches, 4,000 psi, cured 60 days), so anchor pullout was not going to be an issue. Electrical was pre-stubbed to a 208V single-phase 20-amp circuit adjacent to the anchor point. Total install time was five hours from arrival to commissioning.
The one surprise was that the customer’s building had a floor drain positioned exactly where the safety-cam channel would sit. We rotated the lift 90 degrees so the safety-cam channel cleared the drain, and everything else fit. That kind of on-site adjustment is why we do turnkey installs rather than dropping equipment and driving away.
Commissioning and safety walkthrough
After anchoring, plumbing, and wiring, we ran the scissor through three full lift cycles unloaded, then loaded it with a 4,000-pound test weight for another cycle. All safety cams engaged audibly, the hydraulic pressure gauge stayed steady, and the emergency lowering procedure worked as documented. We walked the customer through the daily pre-use inspection, the monthly hydraulic-fluid check, and the annual inspection requirement to keep warranty and ALI certification in force.
He asked one really good question during commissioning: what happens if the power goes out with a vehicle in the air? The answer is that the mechanical safety cams hold the platform on their engaged notch, regardless of hydraulic pressure. Losing power does not drop the platform. That question, and its answer, is worth understanding before you buy any scissor lift for automotive service, because insurance carriers ask it too.
First oil change on the new lift
Two weeks after install, the customer sent us photos of his first oil change on the Tacoma. He raised the truck to about 45 inches of platform height, engaged the safety cams, and slid a drain pan under the oil pan. Total time from drive-on to drive-off was 22 minutes, versus roughly 60 minutes on jack stands. That is the productivity delta a scissor lift for automotive fluid service actually delivers.
He also noted that his back felt substantially better after standing under the vehicle at 45 inches of height instead of lying on a creeper. That is not a small thing for anyone who has done extended undercar work. Twelve-month check-in and lessons learned
Twelve months later, we did the customer’s first annual inspection. Everything was in spec, the hydraulic fluid was still clean, the safety cams still engaged crisply, and the anchor bolts had not backed off. His only complaint was that he wished he had spec’d a slightly wider platform to catch the outside tires of a duallies build he took on late in the year. Not a warranty issue, just a spec lesson for the next buyer.
