A properly rated scissor lift anchored into an underpowered slab is not a safe lift, no matter what the ALI rating on the machine says. The slab has to be at least four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete for lower-capacity scissors, and six inches with rebar for anything over 10,000 pounds or any alignment scissor with full turnplate deployment. Anything less than that is a risk we will not sign off on, regardless of what the shop owner wants to save.

In an existing eastern Nebraska tire shop we always start the safety walkthrough by core-drilling the slab in the planned lift zone before we quote the install. That five-minute test tells us more than any conversation with the previous shop owner about what was originally poured. The safety verification we do on every install is to raise the lift to full height under a calibrated load, then bleed hydraulic pressure and confirm that the lift stays exactly where it is on the mechanical locks alone. Then we cycle down slowly through each lock position and confirm each engages crisply. A lock that hesitates or requires operator effort to disengage during descent is a service issue and we do not commission a lift with hesitating locks. Day-to-Day Safety Habits

Walk around the lift and check for hydraulic drips or oil pooling before the first cycle of the day. Look at the cable runs for any obvious damage or fraying. Verify the mechanical locks engage crisply on the first cycle. Position vehicles onto the lift platforms with the wheels centered on the pad locations. Never leave a vehicle raised on hydraulic pressure alone. Never let anyone stand under a vehicle that is ascending or descending. Never overload the lift beyond its rated capacity.

Those habits are trivial in isolation and safety-critical in aggregate. The Nebraska tire shop has all six technicians on the same daily safety routine, and the shop has completed the first eight months of ownership with zero safety incidents. That is what we want.
