An EV specialty shop owner in northeast Iowa called us last summer with a set of assumptions we hear often and have to correct almost every time. He thought a scissor lift for automotive electric-vehicle work needed to be a specialty product, that ALI Gold certification was a magic seal of approval covering everything, and that he needed a special battery-drop kit built into the deck. Two of those three assumptions were wrong. The third had a partial answer. This piece walks through the common myths we hear from EV shops and lays out what actually matters when you are picking a lift for battery service, differential work, and general maintenance.

Myth: a scissor lift for automotive EV work needs to be a specialty product

The specialty-lift market for EVs is largely marketing. What EV service actually requires is capacity for the vehicle weight, adequate deck spacing under the battery pack, and safe access to the underside for pack removal. A standard commercial scissor lift for automotive service handles all three if it is sized correctly. A Tesla Model Y weighs about 4,400 pounds. A Rivian R1T weighs about 7,100 pounds. A Ford F-150 Lightning weighs about 6,500 pounds. Every one of those numbers is inside the capacity of a mid-range 9,000 or 12,000-pound scissor from Rotary or Challenger, no specialty product required.

What the specialty vendors sell is often a standard commercial scissor with a battery-drop table accessory. The table itself is useful for battery service. The lift underneath it is not proprietary. If you already have a 12K scissor in the bay, adding an EV battery table costs a fraction of buying an integrated system, and the table works with any lift that raises to the correct height. Do not let a sales pitch push you into a specialty product when the accessory route gets you to the same outcome for half the capital. Myth: ALI Gold certification guarantees the lift is safe forever

ALI Gold certification is the Automotive Lift Institute’s independent third-party validation that a lift meets ANSI/ALI ALCTV design and manufacturing standards. It is a genuinely useful benchmark. What it does not do is guarantee ongoing safety after the lift leaves the factory. Certification covers the equipment as manufactured. It does not cover installation quality, operator training, daily inspection habits, or maintenance schedules. A Gold-certified scissor lift for automotive service that is installed on inadequate concrete, operated over capacity, or never inspected can and will fail exactly like an uncertified unit.

What we tell EV shops looking at certifications: start with Gold-certified equipment because the manufacturing baseline matters, then invest in the installation, training, and inspection habits that keep the lift safe over its life. Ask about the anchor spec for your concrete before ordering. Attend the operator training we include with every install. Run the daily inspection checklist every morning. That is what actually keeps the shop safe. The Gold sticker on the column is a starting point, not an endpoint.

Myth: EVs need special deck runners because of the battery pack

This one has a partial truth. Standard scissor deck runners on Rotary and Challenger commercial units are sized for typical passenger-vehicle and light-truck rocker panels. EV battery packs sit under the vehicle floor pan, often flush with or extending slightly below the rocker line. The concern from EV shop owners is that the deck runners will press on the battery pack instead of the rocker. In practice, for every EV we have serviced, the pack is designed to be lifted from the pinch points at the rocker line, and standard scissor deck-runner rubber pads land correctly if the vehicle is positioned right on the deck.

Where the concern becomes real is if the operator drifts the vehicle sideways on the deck during positioning. Then the runner can miss the rocker and contact the pack side. The fix is not a specialty lift. The fix is positioning technique and, on some vehicles, a set of vehicle-specific adapter pads that raise the contact point off the runner and onto a designated rocker pinch. We sell those adapter pads and include a positioning-technique walk-through as part of the training when the shop is EV-focused. Both together solve the actual problem.

Myth: you need a low ground clearance lift for every EV

Some EVs sit low. The Model S at stock ride height clears about 4.6 inches. Most EVs sit at typical passenger-car ride height, 5 to 6 inches. A drive-on scissor with a loaded ramp angle around 7 to 8 degrees clears both cleanly. What you do not need is a specialty low-profile lift unless the shop is specifically servicing lowered performance EVs or aftermarket-modified Rivians and Lightnings. For a general EV shop running Model 3s, Model Ys, Bolts, and stock trucks, a standard scissor lift for automotive service handles the ground clearance question without any accessory ramp.

If the shop does see lowered vehicles frequently, we sell a supplemental low-angle approach ramp for around a hundred dollars per pair. It sets in front of the drive-on ramp and reduces the effective approach angle to about 4 degrees. That covers essentially every stock and mildly-lowered EV on the road today. We keep those in stock and ship them with the lift if the shop mentions ground clearance during the quote conversation. It is a small add that saves the pain of scraping air dams.

What actually matters: capacity, deck length, and lock height increments

The specifications that determine whether a scissor lift for automotive EV service will work in your shop are capacity, deck length, and lock height spacing. Capacity should match your heaviest realistic vehicle plus 25 percent margin. Deck length should exceed your longest vehicle wheelbase by at least six inches to leave working room. Lock spacing should be two to three inches so the technician can position the vehicle at whatever height is most comfortable for the job, not just fully up or fully down. Every Rotary and Challenger commercial scissor we sell hits those three specs.

What you can ignore in the spec sheet unless you have a specific need: color, remote-control options, integrated air lines (nice to have, not essential), and painted-versus-galvanized ramps. Those are preferences, not deciders. What we hear from experienced EV shop owners who have run their equipment for five-plus years is that the boring specs are the ones that matter. The showy specs sound good in the sales pitch and do not affect the daily work.

Northeast Iowa install logistics and service coverage
