An independent pro shop owner in northern Missouri asked us last winter to compare two scissor lift for automotive configurations for his back bay. The use case wasn’t service — it was seasonal storage. He wanted to park a customer’s project car up in the air from October through March, store another vehicle underneath, and free up floor space for real work during the winter grind. That question comes up a lot, and it lands on a specific fork in the decision tree: full-rise scissor versus a 4-post lift. Why storage is a different conversation than service

Service lifts and storage lifts optimize for different things. A scissor lift for automotive service work rewards low deck height, drive-through center access, and mechanical safety-cam engagement at working heights. A storage lift rewards vertical clearance, drive-on stability, and the ability to sit under load for months without cylinder drift. Those are related but not identical priorities, and the shop owner in northern Missouri was smart to raise the difference upfront rather than default to whichever lift the local rep pushed hardest.

For pure storage, most owners default to a 4-post because it drives on easy and holds a vehicle by its wheels, which is arguably safer for long-duration parking than pinch-point pad engagement. But a full-rise scissor lift for automotive shops can absolutely handle storage duty when the deck is long enough and the drive-on ramps are integrated. The tradeoff is bay-space efficiency versus vehicle safety and cost. We run this comparison for a lot of Midwest shop owners, and the honest answer depends on more than just price.

The two configurations, side by side

Configuration A: a 9,000 lb full-rise scissor lift for automotive storage plus service, drive-on version with integrated ramps. Deck length about 175 inches, deck width 87 inches nested, lifts to roughly 68 inches. Two hydraulic cylinders, mechanical safety-cam engagement every two-plus inches. Roughly a 4-by-8 footprint on the concrete when nested.

Configuration B: a 9,000 lb 4-post lift, drive-on with runways. Overall length about 190 inches, width around 110, lifts to about 76 inches. Cable-equalized with mechanical safety locks at multiple heights, and integrated slip plates for alignment prep. Roughly a 5-by-9 footprint on the concrete. Both handle the pro shop owner’s storage vehicle plus the daily service load. The scissor takes a smaller footprint and drops flat when not in use, so the bay is fully usable for other work. The 4-post takes more floor space but drives on faster and holds vehicles more stably long-term. Cost lands within a few hundred dollars of each other in this capacity band — not a decisive factor. Where the choice actually pins is bay geometry and the honest split between storage duty and service duty.

Site survey findings from northern Missouri

The northern Missouri shop had a 40×60 pole building with 12-foot side walls, open trusses at 14-foot peak, and a 5-inch concrete pour from 2015. That’s a plenty-strong slab for either lift. The bay in question was 12 feet wide by 25 feet deep — enough for either configuration, but tight on width for the 4-post’s ramps.

The scissor won the width fight cleanly, giving a foot and a half of clearance on either side for tech mobility. The 4-post left only 8 inches on either side of the ramps, which is tolerable for storage duty but annoying for service work between storage cycles. We measured, sketched both footprints on the floor with chalk, and let the shop owner walk both patterns. That’s the site survey step where the abstract comparison becomes concrete. On paper both configurations look fine. In the actual bay, the scissor felt right and the 4-post felt cramped. That kind of physical check should always happen before the order goes in.

The service work equation

Because this shop was going to run the lift as both a storage lift and a service lift for the other six months of the year, service work weighed into the comparison. A scissor lift for automotive service is faster for brake, tire, and CV work because the center is open. A 4-post requires a rolling bridge jack to get the wheels off the runways for brake and suspension work, which adds a step and a piece of gear.

For this owner’s mix — general seasonal maintenance including tire rotations, brake pad swaps, and occasional CV work — the scissor was the clear service winner. The 4-post’s storage advantage was real but limited: the storage vehicle would sit for five months, then the lift would run daily service for seven. Optimizing for the five-month use case at the cost of the seven-month use case didn’t pencil. That’s the honest tradeoff comparison. Different mix, different answer — but with this specific split, the scissor lift for automotive service and storage together came out ahead. Full-rise scissors and 4-post options are both stocked so we can compare them physically when a shop owner is on the fence.

What each configuration costs to install

Both installs run one day in the standard case. The scissor takes six to eight anchors, hydraulic hookup, and startup — call it six hours of on-site work. The 4-post takes fewer anchors (the columns often use just four heavy anchors each, plus cross-tie plates), but the cable routing and column plumbing take longer. Call it seven hours. Neither install pushes the day.

What differs is what happens if the pad’s not right. A scissor lift for automotive install needs level concrete under the platform footprint — half-inch variation and up starts causing issues. A 4-post has more forgiveness because each column can be shimmed independently and the cables self-tension. On the northern Missouri pour, the level was tight enough that either lift worked without issue. But we’ve seen jobs where a marginal slab pushed the choice toward the 4-post for that reason alone. It’s the kind of thing the site survey catches — the reason we do it before the order, not after the delivery truck shows up.

What we’d tell you to buy for storage-forward use

If your split is 70/30 storage-first or higher, we’d point you toward the 4-post every time. The safety of long-duration parking on the wheels, the ease of drive-on, and the redundancy of cable-equalized locks all favor that configuration. Add rolling jacks to handle occasional service work and you have a strong dual-purpose setup.

If your split is closer to 50/50 or service-forward, the full-rise scissor lift for automotive shops wins. You get the storage capability when you need it, the service speed for the daily grind, and a smaller bay footprint. That was the northern Missouri answer, and it’s the answer for most of the pro shops we work with in the Iowa-Missouri corridor. Where it gets nuanced is when the shop owner is planning a second lift within a year or two — in that case, we sometimes recommend the 4-post first for storage and add a 2-post or scissor later for service. That kind of two-lift roadmap deserves its own conversation, not a spec-sheet decision.
