A West Des Moines hobbyist rebuilding a Ford AOD transmission needed to know something specific: could a scissor lift for automotive transmission service actually fit in his existing three-stall garage without a floor remodel? The answer, after a real site survey, was yes — but only because we caught two things in the walkthrough that would have blocked the install if he had ordered blind. What a site survey actually looks like

A real site survey takes about an hour. We drive to your garage, walk the space, take measurements, photograph the floor, and check the electrical panel. We are not selling you anything on that visit — we are collecting data. For West Des Moines customers, the drive from Ames is short enough that a same-day survey is normal, and we do them free of charge for any serious buyer within our regional service area. Coffee is optional but appreciated.

What we measure: floor slope (which affects lift level), floor thickness where we can determine it (often through as-built drawings), ceiling clearance to the lowest hard object above the lift zone, garage door swing at the raised position, side-wall clearance for door swing on the vehicle, and the amp capacity of your electrical panel. We also inspect existing floor cracks and expansion joints, because those affect anchor placement. Every one of those measurements has a checkbox on our site survey form, and the completed form is what we use to spec your scissor lift for automotive service with confidence.

Concrete assessment: what the floor has to be

Concrete is the first blocking issue on most residential installs. Standard residential three-stall garage slabs are usually four inches of concrete over compacted subgrade. For a full-rise scissor lift for automotive service at 10,000 lb capacity, we prefer to see six inches of concrete with mesh or rebar. Four inches works for lighter-duty scissors and portable mid-rise models, but for a serious drivetrain-work lift, thicker is safer and stiffer under repeated cycling.

If the site survey turns up four-inch concrete and you want a heavier scissor, you have two options. Option one, downgrade to a portable mid-rise or a lower-capacity scissor that the four-inch floor supports. Option two, saw-cut a section of the existing floor and pour a thickened pad in the lift zone. That pour is a one-day concrete job that runs a modest four-figure line item in the Des Moines metro. Most West Des Moines hobbyists opt for the pad extension rather than downgrading the lift, because the extra cost is small compared to living with an under-spec lift for 15 years.

Ceiling and door-track measurements

Ceiling clearance is measured from finished floor to the lowest hard object directly above the lift zone. That “lowest hard object” is often not the ceiling itself but the raised garage door track, an HVAC duct, a plumbing run, or a lighting fixture. If you have a 12-foot ceiling and a garage door track that hangs down to nine feet six inches in its raised position, your working clearance is nine feet six, not twelve. Measure the raised-door position, not the closed-door position.

Nine feet six is tight for a full-rise scissor with a full-size pickup on top. Our threshold for “comfortable” is 10 feet minimum, 11 feet ideal. If the site survey shows nine feet six, we run a specific calculation: your tallest vehicle height plus the lift’s full-rise height plus a six-inch clearance buffer. If that number is under your usable ceiling, you are fine. If it is over, you either raise the door track (rare and expensive) or downgrade to a mid-rise scissor. Most West Des Moines garages we survey have workable ceilings, but every third survey turns up a door-track issue that would have been a nasty install-day surprise.

Electrical service and circuit run

Full-rise scissor lifts run on 220-volt single-phase, drawing 15 to 30 amps depending on the model. That is a dedicated double-pole 30-amp breaker in your panel with a short home run to the lift’s control box. In most West Des Moines residential garages the electrical panel has room for that breaker and the home run is a straightforward pull for a licensed electrician. In some older garages the panel is at capacity and a service upgrade is needed first before any lift-related work.

The site survey covers this by opening the panel and counting available breaker slots. If you have two spare slots side-by-side, we can install the dedicated circuit. If you have zero spares, you either add a subpanel (a modest project) or upgrade the main panel (a bigger one). We do not do the electrical work ourselves — we recommend a local licensed electrician — but we tell you exactly what circuit spec to have installed. Do the electrical work before the lift ships, so that on install day we can plug the pump box into a ready receptacle and finish the work in one visit.

Scissor lift for automotive transmission access

Transmission service is space-hungry. The Ford AOD our West Des Moines customer wanted to rebuild is not small, and pulling it requires clearance underneath the vehicle for the transmission jack, the trans itself, and the technician’s arms. A scissor lift for automotive transmission work needs to give you at least 60 inches of undercarriage clearance at full rise, plus enough width between the runways for a transmission jack to roll in under the vehicle without fighting the deck edges on the way in.

Standard-runway scissors give you the full undercarriage clearance but the trans jack has to enter from the side. Open-center scissors give you top-side access to the tunnel but slightly less floor space for the jack. For AOD-scale transmissions (heavy passenger-car automatics), standard-runway is fine. For heavier truck transmissions or transfer cases, open-center starts to earn its price premium. We spec the configuration based on what you tell us during the site survey about the vehicles you plan to work on most.

Delivery logistics: freight and forklift

Once the site survey is complete and the lift is ordered, delivery logistics become the next hurdle. A full-rise scissor lift for automotive service arrives on a 53-foot dry van, palletized, weighing 1,800 to 2,600 pounds depending on the model. That freight cannot come off the truck with a hand truck. You need either a forklift, a skid steer with pallet forks, or a lift-gate truck (which we can arrange for an added freight cost at the time of ordering).

For West Des Moines home garages, the most common play is asking a neighbor with a skid steer or renting a forklift for the delivery afternoon. Both work. What does not work is having the lift arrive with no unloading plan — the driver will not wait, and you either get charged a return fee or the driver drops the pallet in the street. Coordinate the unloading equipment before the freight ships. We flag the ETA in your order tracking so you know when to line up the forklift. That single coordination saves a real headache on delivery day.

What the West Des Moines hobbyist ended up buying

The site survey caught a floor-thickness issue in the corner of his garage that would have made the original anchor plan marginal; he added a pad extension for a modest cost before install. He also caught a plumbing run at 10 feet three inches that we relocated four feet sideways to open his usable lift zone before the lift shipped.

Install took one day. First job on the lift was the AOD rebuild, and the second was a Ford 9-inch rear-end swap. Both jobs completed comfortably standing upright, both went in the maintenance log, and the customer’s follow-up email described the lift as the single best garage upgrade he had ever made.
