Mid-rise scissors typically top out around 40 to 48 inches, sit low to the ground when collapsed, and are the friendliest pick if you might move the lift or park a truck over it. Full-rise scissors get you into the 65 to 78 inch range — real overhead access, standing under a truck comfortably, and enough room to work on exhausts and driveline in addition to tires. For a western Illinois farm shop where tire rotation is the primary use and everything else is done on jack stands, a mid-rise is usually plenty. Arms, pads, and the symmetric vs asymmetric question adapted for scissors
Symmetric versus asymmetric is a 2-post conversation, but the equivalent choice on a scissor still matters: how the arms and pads reach the vehicle’s lifting points, and whether the platform has a side-shift feature. A wheels-free scissor uses swing arms and pads similar to a 2-post — line the pads up under the frame lift points. A runway-style scissor has you drive up onto a flat deck and use a rolling jack for tires. For tire and wheel work, wheels-free wins because you can spin a wheel without lifting the whole truck twice. For a family fleet of mixed pickups and cars, check the arm-pad adapter kit and confirm a truck adapter is included — most scissors from Rotary or Challenger sell one, but you have to ask. Frame-contact adapter height is the other spec worth checking; a lifted diesel needs taller stack adapters than a stock sedan.
Capacity ratings and how they change with pickup truck length
A scissor lift for automotive spec sheet lists a rated capacity — 6,000, 7,000, 10,000, or 14,000 pounds most commonly. What is easy to miss is that rated capacity often assumes the load is distributed evenly on the arms or runways. Push a long-wheelbase pickup onto a shorter scissor platform and the front axle can overhang, which shifts load in a way the rating did not assume. For farm shop use where you may have a diesel three-quarter-ton, we usually recommend rating up: buy a 10,000 or 14,000 pound scissor even if the truck itself weighs 7,500 pounds, so the platform length gives you the wheelbase room. Trailer axle work, small dump-body wheels, and skid-steer wheels also do better on the larger platforms. Do not shop by curb weight alone — shop by platform length plus rated capacity plus your longest expected vehicle.
Power source options: 110V, 220V, or shop air
Farm shops in rural western Illinois often have a single 220V line to the welder and a handful of 110V outlets — and that is it. When you spec a scissor lift for automotive tire work, ask up front whether the model runs on 110V, 220V single-phase, or shop air with a hydraulic-air pump. Lower-capacity mid-rise scissors will typically run on 110V. Full-rise scissors above 10,000 pounds usually want 220V single-phase. If your building only has 110V and a run to the sub-panel is expensive, an air-over-hydraulic model can be a workaround, provided your compressor is sized to keep up. Concrete pad prep for a scissor lift in a metal-frame farm building
Most metal-frame farm shops in western Illinois are poured with a four or five inch slab, sometimes with wire mesh, sometimes without. A scissor lift for automotive use needs a slab that will handle the concentrated load under its anchor points or feet. Four inches with mesh, 3,000 psi or better, is the common minimum for mid-rise scissors. Full-rise scissors usually want five or six inches. If you know the slab was poured for a garage with no plans for a lift, we will ask a few questions about age, cracks, and joint layout before you commit. Portable or non-anchored scissors can side-step the slab question at the cost of shifting the load rating. Never anchor to an expansion joint, and never sit a lift foot on a slab section thinner than the manual calls out.
