The Quad Cities body shop wanted to store two vehicles per bay: one on the scissor at height, one on the floor underneath. That is the classic body shop storage move. For it to work, you need a full-rise scissor with enough clearance to fit a full-size vehicle underneath at the full rise position. Most full-rise scissors give 66 to 75 inches of vehicle clearance at max height. For a Toyota Camry or a common sedan on the floor, that is plenty. For a customer F-250 on the floor, you may run out of headroom. We run the math with actual vehicle heights before we sell. Stack two vehicles vertically only after you have measured the shorter one and confirmed the scissor’s actual clearance spec, not the marketing spec. Do not trust the round numbers on the brochure. Concrete requirements for long-duration storage
Concrete slab requirements for a scissor lift for automotive storage are stricter than daily service. A daily-cycled lift puts point-loads on the slab intermittently. A storage lift puts the same load on the same anchors for weeks at a time. Body shops built in the 1970s and 1980s often have four-inch slabs with no rebar. Those are okay for occasional service but marginal for long-duration storage. We recommend a minimum of six inches of 3,000 PSI concrete with rebar or mesh for storage-rated scissor installs. The Quad Cities body shop had an original four-inch slab and we ended up cutting a section and pouring a six-inch reinforced pad specifically under the lift footprint. That added a week to the install timeline and about $2,000 to the project. Better than a lift that shifts under six months of load. Buying used versus new for a body shop
Used ALI Gold scissor lifts do exist on the market, and for a body shop with a tight capital budget they can be a real value. But the resale market for scissor lifts is thinner than for two-posts, and the units that come up are often either heavily used former dealership floor lifts or lightly used home-garage returns. We stock a small used inventory and we recondition every unit before resale. The three things we look at on any used scissor for a body shop storage buyer: hydraulic cylinder rod condition (any pitting means seal wear), mechanical lock pawl wear (worn pawls do not click cleanly into position), and slave-side flow balance (imbalanced flow means one corner rises faster than the other, a serious hazard for a stored vehicle).
