The Rotary and Challenger 10,000-pound full-rise scissors we install run 218 to 240 inches drive-through length with ramps deployed, 84 to 92 inches overall width across the outboard edge of the runways, and 74 to 80 inches of vehicle clearance at maximum rise. Collapsed height sits around 4 to 6 inches for surface-mount, and flush-mount lands at floor level. The Urbandale dealership needed 240 inches of clear drive-through length in their express bay for a full-length truck to fit with ramps deployed. Their bay was 260 inches. That leaves 10 inches at each end for the tech to walk. It is tight. Any smaller bay and the truck would not fit. Measure your bay in inches before you order, not feet. Round numbers on the brochure lose the two inches that make the difference.

A scissor lift for automotive suspension work needs enough rise to get a tech underneath comfortably with a spring compressor and an impact gun. That is typically 60 inches of undercar working height minimum. Full-rise scissors from Rotary and Challenger give 66 to 78 inches at max, which is plenty. The mechanical lock positions on these lifts click every 2 to 2.5 inches through the rise, giving a tech 12 to 15 discrete height settings between the lowest usable working height and full rise. For a suspension job on a coil-over strut assembly, a tech typically wants the vehicle at chest height for spring compressor work, then raised further for control arm removal. Being able to click into a specific height and know the mechanical lock is engaged (not just the hydraulic hold) is the safety layer that matters for suspension work, where you may be swinging a heavy impact on a torque-loaded strut. Hydraulic hold alone is not enough for that work class.

Standard-length runways on a Rotary or Challenger scissor let a tech access the wheel wells, the strut towers from underneath, and the entire subframe. What you cannot do from a runway scissor is remove all four wheels without wheels-free jacks. Commercial-grade scissors from Rotary and Challenger use 3 to 5 horsepower single-phase or three-phase motors, with hydraulic pumps rated for continuous duty. Home-garage-grade scissors often use smaller motors rated for intermittent duty only, which will overheat under dealership use. The lift-and-lower cycle time on a commercial scissor runs about 45 to 60 seconds up and 30 to 40 seconds down. Over an eight-hour dealership shift with 20 to 30 lift cycles, the motor spends roughly 25 minutes running total. Dealership utilization math, hours-per-day and payback

The Urbandale dealership express bay ran about 6 hours of billable service per day per lift, at an average shop rate that puts each bay-hour into three-figure revenue territory. A commercial full-rise scissor at mid-tier commercial pricing paid back in under a year of that utilization. Home-garage or entry-tier scissors at half the price also pay back in under a year, but the failure rate under dealership duty means the total cost over five years is higher for the cheap unit than the commercial unit. Resale value on a scissor lift for automotive service after three to five years of dealership use depends on three things: brand recognition, ALI Gold certification status, and maintenance records. Rotary and Challenger commercial units hold 55 to 70 percent of new value at three years if the maintenance records are complete. The same units with no records drop to 35 to 45 percent. ALI Gold status boosts resale by roughly 15 percent versus non-certified units. Off-brand and non-certified scissors have essentially no organized resale market: you sell them locally on trade sites for whatever a hobbyist will pay. For a dealership planning capital-equipment residual values in the pro forma, the answer is buy Rotary or Challenger, keep the paperwork, and expect to recover 60 percent at five years. That was the number the Urbandale dealership needed to close the budget conversation. It matched their reality.

Total spend was in the top-tier bracket. Five-year residual projection was $6,500 to $8,500 per unit.
