You need a stable platform that will not sway under a technician leaning on a tie rod, a level runway front to rear so the alignment heads read true, and clean access to the wheels so you can spin, adjust, and torque without fighting the deck. All three matter at once. Some scissor decks are optimized for quick brake work — short deck, high center clearance, minimal accessories. Those will hoist the car just fine, but the alignment tech will fight the geometry every single job.

What you actually want for alignment is a longer runway model with integrated front turnplates and a rear slip pocket, sized for the wheelbase range you already service. In central Iowa that usually means everything from a Subaru Outback to a three-quarter-ton pickup. If you spec down to a compact-only deck to save money, you will end up rolling the truck jobs to the four-post and losing bay flexibility. Manufacturers love glossy PDFs. What actually matters when you compare a scissor lift for automotive alignment sits in five lines of the spec sheet. First, capacity — 6,000 lb is fine for cars but marginal for loaded three-quarter-ton work; 9,000 to 12,000 lb is the sweet spot for a shop that touches trucks. Second, runway length — 168 inches minimum for full-size trucks; 180-plus if you rotate anything with a long wheelbase. Third, minimum collapsed height — a 4-inch deck lets low sport sedans clear the ramps; a 10-inch deck forces you to fight approach angles all day.

Fourth, maximum rise — you want at least 68 inches for a tech to stand under it comfortably; 74 inches is better. Fifth, and this is the one that gets ignored, the certification stamp.
