A third-generation family-owned garage in the Des Moines metro asked our team recently whether the symmetric versus asymmetric distinction that dominates 2-post lift conversations applies to a scissor lift for automotive differential fluid service. It’s a smart question. The short answer is that scissor lifts don’t have swing arms, so the classic symmetric-asymmetric arm choice doesn’t apply directly, but there is a related decision about pad placement and runway geometry that has the same practical effect on how a car sits and how a tech works around it. This piece is a technical deep-dive with real dimensions from installs we’ve completed in the metro.

Why symmetric vs asymmetric doesn’t map cleanly to a scissor lift for automotive service

On a 2-post lift, symmetric means the front and rear arms are the same length and the vehicle sits centered between the columns. Asymmetric means the rear arms are longer than the front, and the vehicle sits offset forward so the doors clear the columns for the driver to get out easily. Both configurations put a swing arm under each of the four jack points, and the choice comes down to what fits your customer mix.

A scissor lift for automotive service has no columns and no swing arms. On a drive-on runway model, the vehicle rolls onto two parallel runways that lift the tires directly. On a pad scissor, four pads spot under the frame jack points from below. Neither configuration has the driver-door-clearance problem that drove the asymmetric 2-post design in the first place. But there’s an analogous choice: runway width and pad spread relative to the vehicle’s track width and wheelbase, which we’ll walk through in the next sections.

Runway width dimensions and what vehicles fit

Standard scissor lift for automotive runway width is about 21 inches per runway, with the inside spread adjustable from about 34 to 44 inches. That covers passenger cars with track widths of 55 to 65 inches and light trucks with track widths of 65 to 72 inches. A Ford F-150 has a track width of about 68 inches, which sits inside the standard runway spread with a couple inches to spare on each side. A Ford F-350 dually has a rear track width of about 79 inches, which is outside the standard spread and needs a wide-runway option.

Wide-runway scissor lifts spread the runways from about 38 to 56 inches inside, which handles the dually and even some medium-duty trucks. If your Des Moines metro shop sees a mix of half-ton and dually pickups, the wide-runway option is worth the couple hundred dollars extra. It’s the closest analog on a scissor to picking the right arm length on a 2-post. Get it wrong and the truck won’t fit or won’t balance properly. Get it right and every truck rolls on smoothly.

Pad spread on a pad-style scissor lift for automotive work

Pad-style scissors have four adjustable arms that reach out from the base, with pads on the ends that sit under the vehicle jack points. The forward pad spread is typically about 24 to 42 inches, and the rear spread is about 42 to 60 inches. That range covers everything from a Miata to an F-250 with the right adjustment. It doesn’t quite cover a full-size van because the wheelbase is too long, and it doesn’t cover certain sports cars because the pinch welds are in unusual positions.

The analog to asymmetric 2-post here is that some scissor pad arms are designed to extend further to one side than the other, letting you shift the vehicle center of gravity forward or backward on the machine. This is useful on vehicles with mid-engine or rear-engine layouts where the balance point is not centered between the axles. For most differential fluid service on typical Iowa vehicles, the standard pad geometry works fine. The exception is Corvettes and mid-engine European sports cars, which need careful spotting.

Differential access and clearance for jack stands and drain pans

Differential fluid service on a scissor lift for automotive service is one of the more common jobs at a family-owned metro shop. On a rear-wheel drive truck like an F-250, the diff hangs about 10 inches below the axle, and the fill and drain plugs sit at 3 and 9 o’clock. On a full-rise runway scissor at 68 inches, the diff is at chest height and the plugs are at eye level. The tech doesn’t need to reach up or crouch down, which speeds the job dramatically.

On a pad-style scissor at similar height, the wheels hang free and the differential is fully exposed with no runway blocking access from below. That’s actually a slight advantage for diff work versus a runway scissor: you can walk under the axle without the runways in the way. On the other hand, catching drained fluid is easier on a runway model because the drain pan sits flat on the shop floor without needing to slide around obstacles. Both configurations work; the choice depends on what other work the shop does.

Balance and center-of-gravity on rear-wheel-drive trucks

Center of gravity on a rear-wheel drive truck is roughly one third of the way back from the front axle when empty, and shifts further back when the bed is loaded. On a scissor lift for automotive service with a runway configuration, you want the vehicle spotted so that the center of gravity sits roughly centered between the runway lift points. On most trucks that means the front bumper hangs about a foot past the front of the runway and the rear bumper hangs about a foot past the back.

On a pad-style scissor, the four pads should carry roughly equal load. On a truck this means the front pads sit under the frame rail just behind the front tires, and the rear pads sit under the frame rail just ahead of the rear tires. If the truck is loaded with a heavy tool box in the bed, shift the rear pads slightly rearward to keep the balance right. Our install crew teaches this in the on-site walkthrough. Getting the balance wrong isn’t dangerous on a proper lift but it puts extra load on two of the four pads and can shorten seal life over time.

Fluid capture, waste oil handling, and shop floor drainage

A family-owned garage doing regular differential service will burn through diff fluid at a rate of a few gallons a week. A scissor lift for automotive service in a well-planned shop should sit near the waste fluid tank so the drain pan doesn’t have to travel far. The typical layout puts the lift on one side of the bay, the waste oil tank in the corner with a foot pedal pump, and the fresh fluid dispenser on a rolling cart. That keeps the tech’s walking path short and the risk of a fluid spill low.

Shop floor drainage under the scissor should be considered but usually not needed. Diff fluid is thick and stays in the pan; unlike a coolant flush, there’s no spray or overflow. What does help is a small floor sink or a spot with a shop rag mat under the runway drop point. Selection summary: what a metro family shop should buy
