Deck size and lift height for restoration and metal work

Restoration work needs deck length. A body shop scraping rust from a rocker panel or replacing a quarter-panel needs the technician standing under the vehicle with both hands free, and cars run longer than a stubby mid-rise deck can support. The Rotary and Challenger full-rise scissor units we spec for dealership back-bays run 80 to 84 inches of deck length with drive-on ramps that add another 24 inches loaded. Full lift height sits at 72 to 74 inches under the deck for models like the SX14 or RLP77 class of unit, which puts the vehicle chassis at about neck-height for a six-foot technician doing seam welding.

A scissor lift for automotive restoration work should also handle a low ground clearance. Restored classics and modified vehicles frequently sit below three inches of factory clearance. A drive-on scissor needs the loaded ramp angle to stay under about 8 degrees for those vehicles to clear cleanly. The mid-rise units we sell run a lower deck height loaded, which is fine for oil work but wrong for restoration because they cap out around 48 inches of lift. Get the full-rise. The extra capital is worth it for the shoulders and back of whoever is welding under the car for three hours.

Weight capacity ratings and how they map to real vehicles

The Urbandale dealership was working restoration jobs on classic Mustangs, mid-70s pickups, and the occasional Corvette. Those vehicles run 3,400 to 4,200 pounds curb weight, so the capacity question felt obvious to him. It is less obvious than it sounds. Restoration work often involves welding sub-frame reinforcements, adding weight during the job, or moving the vehicle back onto the lift with a partial engine installed. Buffer your capacity 25 to 30 percent above your heaviest realistic loaded configuration. A 7,000-pound scissor is honest for classic-car restoration; a 9,000-pound is fine and leaves headroom for the occasional half-ton or three-quarter-ton truck.

What we would not do is undersize. A scissor lift for automotive metal work sees stress the manufacturer did not test for. Hammer-and-dolly work on a fender vibrates the deck. Sub-frame straightening pulls sideways on the linkage. Grinding sends sparks into places you did not intend. Getting the capacity buffer right means the lift lasts fifteen years instead of eight, and it means an insurance auditor visiting the shop will not have anything to write up on the equipment line. Both matter for a dealership body-shop line-item that has to justify itself on P&L every quarter.

Ceiling clearance and drive-on approach angles in a body shop

Body shops rarely have generous ceilings. The Urbandale bay was 12 feet 4 inches to the underside of the exposed truss, and the technician wanted the option to lift a Suburban later for undercarriage rust repair. A full-rise scissor with a 72-inch deck-height puts the top of a Suburban at roughly 11 feet 8 inches, which cleared their bay with four inches of headroom. That is tighter than we would ordinarily like but it works if the ceiling is clean, if there are no drops for the paint booth exhaust, and if the operator is careful with the top-most locking position. We measured before we quoted.

Drive-on approach matters too. Body shops usually have polished concrete or epoxy floors and painted lane markers. The drive-on ramp of a scissor sits about 5 inches at the outside edge. That transition is fine for most vehicles but scrapes on lowered restoration cars unless the shop preps a smooth entry with a supplemental low-angle ramp. We sell those as an add-on for around a hundred dollars a pair and they save the pain of scraping air-dammed front bumpers on the way onto every job.

Financing terms and how the payment schedule really works

The Urbandale service manager’s real question was cash flow. The dealership had budget for the reconditioning contract but had already committed the equipment line for the quarter. We offer 0 percent for 12 months through First Business Bank with a 90-day payment deferral. Practically that means the lift is delivered and installed, the shop starts earning revenue on it inside week one, and the first monthly payment is not due until the fourth month. For a bay generating $3,000 to $5,000 in labor per week, the lift pays for itself before payment one hits the accounting system.

Extended financing beyond 12 months runs 6 to 9 percent depending on credit and equipment class. What we tell dealer principals and fleet managers is this: run the 0/12/90 program first if you qualify, because free money is free money. If the payoff timeline is longer than 12 months, extended financing still beats putting a scissor lift for automotive restoration onto a company card at 22 percent.
