Earlier this year we installed a scissor lift for automotive work in an east-central Iowa pole barn for an overlanding builder we will call the customer, since he asked us not to publish the shop name. He runs a lifted three-quarter-ton diesel with a rooftop tent, roof rack, and enough recovery gear to outfit a small expedition. He wanted a lift for oil changes, fluid service, and skid-plate inspection between trips. This case study walks through the freight scheduling, the forklift day at the barn, the anchor pattern on the slab, and the first oil change he did once the lift was cycled. Nothing here is theoretical. It is a real install, generalized so the customer stays anonymous.

Why an overlander picked a scissor over a 2-post
Ceiling height in the pole barn was ten feet clear. The overlanded three-quarter-ton with the rooftop tent measures nine feet six inches at parked height. A 2-post lift would have raised the truck maybe eighteen inches before the tent smacked the trusses. That killed the 2-post option before we ran any other numbers. A full-rise scissor lift for automotive service, on the other hand, lifts the entire vehicle straight up with no arm sweep and no column head to worry about. The tent sits parallel to the trusses instead of rotating through the ceiling.
We also weighed portability. The customer had considered a portable pad lift so he could take it to a friend’s barn for weekend wrenching sessions. Ultimately the truck’s loaded weight pushed us to a fixed 9,000-pound mid-rise, which is heavier than any portable will support safely. He gave up mobility for capacity and hasn’t regretted it. A scissor lift for automotive rig work needs to be sized to the fully-loaded truck, not the empty truck on the sales floor. He was carrying about 900 pounds of recovery gear on top of the bed.
Freight scheduling from Ames to east-central Iowa
The lift shipped from our Ames warehouse to his county on an LTL common carrier with a lift gate. Ames to east-central Iowa is about a two-hour freight run, and the carrier’s terminal is in Cedar Rapids. He got a call the day before delivery to schedule a four-hour window. On delivery day, the driver pulled into his driveway, lowered the lift gate, and dropped the 1,200-pound pallet at the base of the pole barn ramp.
Freight always ships as-is on the pallet. The carton is corrugated and about waist-high. Nothing is fragile inside, but the hydraulic power unit and the ramp plates are the heaviest pieces and they sit at the top of the crate. We coach every customer to leave the pallet strapped until they have the equipment inside the barn. Cutting the strap outside means loose ramp plates when a March wind comes through. He waited until the pallet was inside before he touched a knife.
Forklift day: how we moved 1,200 pounds without one
The customer did not own a forklift. His nearest neighbor with a skid steer was on vacation the week of delivery. So we sent two of our install team down with a heavy-duty pallet jack, an appliance dolly, and a set of moving straps. The lift gate delivery placed the pallet on gravel about twenty feet from the barn door. Pallet jacks do not roll on gravel. Straight up they will not budge in loose stone.
Our workaround: we laid two eight-foot 2×10 boards from the pallet to the barn threshold as a temporary road for the pallet jack. Two guys pushed while a third steered. The pallet crossed the gravel in about fifteen minutes. Inside the barn the concrete was smooth and the jack rolled normally. Total unload-and-position time was about an hour. If you do not have a forklift and you cannot borrow one, plan on that hour and have three able-bodied helpers. A scissor lift for automotive garage delivery is not a one-person job on gravel.
Anchor pattern on a ten-year-old pole barn slab
The pole barn slab was poured in the early 2000s to a five-inch spec with number-four rebar on 18-inch centers. We drilled a test hole in an inconspicuous corner to confirm before we committed to the anchor pattern. The slab measured 5.25 inches. Rebar hit at 2.5 inches down, right where the plans said. That is a strong slab for a scissor lift for automotive service.
The lift base is a rectangular footprint about 78 inches by 60 inches. Six anchor points, two on each of the long sides and two on one short side. We laid the base plate on the slab as a template, marked the six anchor holes with a paint pen, and drilled with a 3/4-inch hammer bit to a depth of 4.5 inches. Blew the concrete dust out of each hole with compressed air. Dropped in the wedge anchors, tapped them home, torqued to 110 foot-pounds. From lift-off-the-pallet to fully anchored took about two hours with two of our crew. He watched and asked questions the whole time so he could re-anchor if he ever moves the barn.
The first oil change on the new lift
The customer’s first job on the new lift was the truck’s overdue oil change. He drove up onto the pads at low idle, chocked the wheels, and raised to 42 inches. The oil drain plug on the diesel oil pan sits about four inches below the frame rails, so at 42 inches of lift the plug was at chest height. He set a fifteen-quart drain pan under the plug on a rolling cart, broke the plug with a 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and let it drain.
While the oil drained, he pulled the oil filter housing on top of the engine and replaced the cartridge. Cleaned the oil pan drain plug threads with a rag. Torqued the plug back to 25 foot-pounds. Refilled with 12 quarts of the 15W-40 diesel spec oil the truck calls for. Total time from drive-on to drive-off was 35 minutes. On jack stands, he told us the same job used to take two hours because of the ground-level pan-swap and the tight clearance to the oil filter. A scissor lift for automotive maintenance pays back the purchase price in labor time within maybe three years for a weekend wrencher who works on two or three vehicles a week.
Where the scissor shines for overlanders
Skid plates are the killer feature for overlanders. Every serious overlanding build has a full underbody of aluminum or steel skid plates protecting the transfer case, transmission pan, fuel tank, and control arms. Removing those skids for inspection or fluid service is a nightmare on jack stands because the bolts are all overhead and you cannot get a torque wrench square to them. On a mid-rise scissor at 42 inches of lift, every skid plate bolt is at chest height and every torque wrench swing is horizontal.
He removes the transfer case skid every winter to inspect the case and change the fluid. He removes the transmission pan skid every 30,000 miles for a filter and fluid change. He removes the fuel tank skid annually to inspect the tank straps for corrosion. All of that is 15 minutes of skid work at chest height on the scissor instead of 40 minutes lying on his back with an overhead torque wrench. When we say a scissor lift for automotive rig maintenance pays for itself, we mean the labor time saved on jobs he was already doing.
What we would change on the next install
Two things we would do differently. First, we would pour a temporary gravel ramp of crushed limestone from the driveway to the barn door before the freight truck arrived. The 2×10 boards worked, but a graveled path would have shaved the unload time in half. Cost: about $200 for a load of number-two limestone. Second, we would run the 220-volt outlet before delivery instead of after. The customer had planned to add the outlet the weekend after the lift arrived, so we could not power-cycle the lift the same day. We had to come back for a second visit. Front-loading the electrical saves everyone a trip.
Everything else went to plan. The scissor is anchored, cycled, and holds fluid pressure without leak. He is on his fifth oil change and third differential service, and reports the lift is quieter than his neighbor’s 2-post.
