A southeast Iowa dealership service manager called us last quarter asking about a scissor lift for automotive service in a new fast-lane bay. His shop already had six 2-post lifts on the main floor, but a new express-service bay was going in and he wanted a mid-rise scissor for quick oil, tire, and differential fluid jobs. This deep-dive covers the technical decisions: single-phase versus three-phase power, breaker sizing, conduit runs, real dimensions from the install manual, and how a scissor integrates with a dealer’s warranty and downtime workflow. What a dealership actually needs from a scissor
A dealer’s fast-lane bay is optimized for cycle time. Every second the vehicle is in the bay is a second the customer is in the waiting room drinking bad coffee. A scissor lift for automotive service in that context has to do three things: lift fast, hold securely, and lower fast. Cycle time from drive-on to full lift on a well-maintained mid-rise runs 25 to 35 seconds. Return to floor runs about the same. That is comparable to a 2-post but with no arm-swing or spot-arm placement, which shaves another 30 to 45 seconds per job.
The tradeoff is wheel access. A mid-rise pad-lift scissor holds the vehicle at the frame or pinch weld, so wheels stay attached. Fine for oil changes and diff fluid service, not fine for tire rotations. The manager wanted a full-rise scissor with drive-on runways and rolling jack plates so his express techs could pull wheels for tire and brake work. That pushes the spec up in size and cost, but it keeps the bay universal. One lift covers oil, tires, brakes, and differentials. We recommended a 9,000-pound full-rise unit.
Single-phase versus three-phase power
Every fixed scissor lift for automotive service is available in single-phase 220-volt or three-phase 208- or 480-volt configurations. Single-phase is the residential and small-shop standard, drawing 15 to 20 amps at 220 volts. Three-phase is the commercial standard, drawing 6 to 10 amps at 208 or 480 volts depending on the motor.
For a dealer that already has three-phase service coming into the building, going three-phase on the lift is almost always the right call. Motor life is longer because three-phase motors run cooler and smoother than single-phase. Cycle time is faster by two to four seconds because the three-phase motor puts out full torque immediately. Cost of a three-phase power unit is about $200 more than the equivalent single-phase. If the building has three-phase and you go single-phase to save $200 up front, you pay it back in six months in slower cycle time and more motor replacements. The dealer’s building had 208-volt three-phase, so we spec’d a 208-volt three-phase power unit and matched motor.
Amperage draw, breakers, and conduit
The 208-volt three-phase power unit on the 9,000-pound scissor draws 8 amps at full load. National Electrical Code requires the breaker be sized at 125 percent of full-load current for a continuous-duty motor. That means a 10-amp breaker at minimum, and we typically spec a 15-amp three-phase breaker for headroom and to accept motor startup surge without nuisance-tripping.
Conduit run from the shop’s main three-phase panel to the lift power unit was 45 feet in the dealership’s case. At 15-amp continuous load over 45 feet, number-12 THHN copper is adequate but we upsized to number-10 for voltage drop margin. The conduit itself was 3/4-inch EMT run along the ceiling. We do not recommend running lift power in the slab because if you ever need to service the run, you are jackhammering the floor. Overhead conduit costs an hour more to install and saves days of downtime if something ever goes wrong. A scissor lift for automotive dealer service should be wired like it will be there twenty years, because it will.
Dedicated versus shared circuits
The dealer’s main three-phase panel was at 60 percent load before we added the lift. Adding 15 amps of continuous load pushed it to 68 percent. Below the 80 percent threshold NEC recommends as continuous-load maximum. So the shared panel worked without needing a subpanel.
If your dealer panel is closer to full, you have two choices. First, add a subpanel dedicated to the service department and put the lift on it. This gives you future headroom for a second or third lift and clean isolation if a lift ever throws a fault. Second, load-shed something else. Every dealer service department has one or two circuits that are wildly over-spec’d (that 200-amp compressor circuit for a 40-amp compressor is common). Reallocating headroom is fine but requires a licensed electrician to re-tag and rebalance. We work with two electricians in southeast Iowa who understand shop panels and can turn a load calc around in three days. Differential fluid service workflow
The dealership’s express bay does about 30 differential fluid services a week between customer-pay and factory-scheduled maintenance. On the new full-rise scissor, the workflow is: drive up onto the runways, raise to 60 inches (walk-under height), engage safety locks, roll the drain pan cart under the differential. Break the fill plug first with a 3/8-drive breaker bar to confirm it will loosen. Break the drain plug next. Drain. Inspect drain plug for shavings. Clean threads. Reinstall drain plug at 25 to 35 foot-pounds depending on manufacturer.
Refill through the fill port with the vehicle’s spec gear oil. Most manufacturers call for 75W-90 GL-5, some newer trucks call for a synthetic 75W-140 with limited-slip additive. Pump until fluid dribbles out. Reinstall fill plug at spec torque. Lower. From drive-on to drive-off, a full differential service on a scissor lift for automotive dealer use runs 12 to 15 minutes for a single differential and 18 to 22 minutes for both front and rear on a 4×4. Compare to 25 to 35 minutes on a 2-post where you have to move the vehicle to reposition arms. Cycle-time savings are the whole reason a dealer picks a scissor for the express bay.
Real dimensions the manager wanted
Dealer service managers want numbers. Here are the real dimensions from the unit we installed. Overall length of the runways: 168 inches. Overall width: 82 inches. Height when fully lowered: 4.75 inches from floor to top of runway. Maximum lift height: 74 inches to top of runway. Rise time: 45 seconds. Descent time: 40 seconds. Motor: 3 HP 208-volt three-phase, 8 amp full-load current. Reservoir capacity: 3 gallons hydraulic fluid, ISO 32.
Anchor pattern: eight 3/4-inch wedge anchors, torqued to 110 foot-pounds. Recommended slab: six inches minimum, 3,500 psi, number-four rebar on 18-inch centers. Ceiling clearance required with typical passenger vehicle raised: 11 feet 6 inches. Ceiling clearance required with a stock full-size pickup raised: 12 feet 4 inches. The dealer’s bay ceiling was 13 feet 6 inches, so every vehicle in the fleet clears with room. If your ceiling is below 11 feet, we look at a mid-rise instead of a full-rise for the same functional bay.
Warranty, downtime, and dealer integration
Manufacturer warranty on a commercial-grade scissor lift for automotive service is typically two years on the structure and one year on the hydraulic power unit. ALI-certified units carry an additional third-party structural certification. We only sell ALI-certified units to dealers. If a covered failure happens in year one, the manufacturer ships the replacement part free and we swap it in a scheduled downtime window. Turnaround is usually three to five business days for a hydraulic power unit, two to three days for a lock cylinder, same-day for wear items like ramps and pad covers.
