When a collector in Davenport called us last spring wanting a scissor lift for automotive storage and light service, we walked through the same first-year decisions we have helped hundreds of Iowa owners think through. He was stacking a project car under a driver, needed exhaust and driveline access on both vehicles, and had a deep three-stall garage with twelve-foot walls. What he did not want was a two-post that would plant columns in the middle of his bay. This article is the practical first-year story: what we installed, how it landed on the freight truck, the workflow he settled into, and what the first oil-pan drop taught him about lift-bay layout in a real garage.

Why the scissor made sense for his garage

His garage was oversized in every direction, but the middle stall was where the family wanted room to walk around a parked car. A two-post would have planted columns exactly where they wanted floor space, and a four-post would have owned the bay whether he was working or not. A full-rise scissor lift for automotive service and light storage sat flat against the floor when he was not using it, then rose to full height when he was, then came right back down. That footprint flexibility was the whole reason it made his shortlist over the column configurations we usually quote.

The second reason was the vehicle mix. He had a lifted truck, a low-slung coupe, and a project sedan that needed regular under-body time. A pad-style full-rise handles all three from the frame or pinch weld the same way a two-post would. When we told him what a scissor gives up — the deck is under the vehicle so you cannot walk the length — and what it gives back — open sides, no columns, easy to stack a car over a car — he stopped comparing configurations and started measuring the slab. That’s the same conversation every collector eventually has.

Lift-bay layout: walkways, swing room, and pendant routing

We laid the bay out on paper before the freight was ordered. On a full-rise scissor, the deck is roughly the width and length of the vehicle sitting on it, which means you get real walkways down both sides — something a two-post surrenders because the columns eat the outboard clearance. We spec’d a 24-inch walkway on the driver side and 30 inches on the passenger side, because that is where the toolbox lives. The anchor pattern was straightforward on his four-inch pour, and we sighted the deck parallel to the wall so a car could pull straight in without a hunt-and-peck approach.

The second layout decision was overhead clearance and pendant routing. His twelve-foot walls gave him more than enough travel; a full-rise scissor lift for automotive work typically tops out around 72-76 inches of pad height, and that is plenty for a six-foot tech to stand upright under a passenger vehicle. Storing a car on top of a car needs another 48-56 inches of clear stack, which he had. What he did not have was a 220V circuit near the bay — that got added during install, and we ran the pendant cord where it would not get pinched under a wheel every time the deck came down.

Freight delivery in Davenport: what actually shows up

A common surprise on first-time lift orders is the truck. A full-rise scissor arrives on a common carrier LTL, palletized and shrink-wrapped, and the deck-plus-base assembly is heavy enough that a residential driveway drop is not going to work with a liftgate alone. On his delivery day we coordinated a rollback wrecker to pull the pallet down, because he did not own a forklift and the LTL driver was not going to fight with a 1,300-pound crate on a residential slab. Some buyers rent a forklift for the day; others use a landscape trailer plus a rental skid steer with pallet forks. Both work.

Once the freight is on the ground, the install is a day. We uncrated on the driveway, walked the components into the bay, dropped the anchor pattern, and torqued the pad to the slab. Hydraulic bleed and cycle testing takes another hour or two, plus the safety-lock walk-through. The first exhaust job: room to work and where the arms sit

His first real job on the lift was pulling the cat-back off the coupe. On a two-post, exhaust work is comfortable because the entire under-body is open and you can walk from front to back without dodging anything. A pad-style scissor is different — the deck is under the vehicle bumper to bumper, so you cannot walk the length; you work from the outboard side and reach in. What that means in practice is that we set his exhaust hangers by dropping the deck to shoulder height, cutting the hangers off, and then raising the lift to feed the pipe past the rockers.

He was worried the deck would block his angle drill on the flange bolts. It did not, because the pinch-weld pockets on a full-rise scissor lift for automotive pad work sit inboard of the rockers, so the outboard rocker edge is exposed. The catalytic converter itself came out from the passenger side without a fight. If you are running long-tube headers on a track car and you need to lower the exhaust straight down, a two-post is easier — that is the honest tradeoff. For a normal cat-back, muffler, or resonator swap, the scissor is fine and often faster because you never walk around a column.

Driveline access and how deck geometry helps

Driveshaft work — pulling the two-piece on the truck, greasing the U-joints on the coupe — is where the pad-style deck earns its keep. On a full-rise scissor, the tunnel between the two pad rails runs the length of the vehicle. You are looking straight up at the driveshaft from the center of the bay, and there is no obstruction. That is exactly how a two-post feels, minus the columns to walk around. He greased the U-joints on the truck in about ten minutes, which is what he had been dreading on jack stands for the last two winters.

Rear-end fluid changes on the sedan and truck were the same story. The differential cover sits directly above the tunnel, the drain plug drips into a pan you slide between the pad rails, and the fill plug is accessible from either side. This is one of the areas where owners who cross-shopped a scissor lift for automotive service against a low-rise or mid-rise scissor tell us they made the right call — the low-rise gives you tire-off work but not full-height driveline work, and if you have the ceiling for it, full-rise is the answer for a home shop that does its own fluid service.

Storing a car on it: locks, height stops, and long-term rest

The reason he wanted a lift in the first place was storage — a summer car up in the air over the daily driver in winter. Full-rise scissors set on mechanical locks at fixed intervals, not on hydraulic pressure, which is exactly what you want for long-term parking. On his unit the locks click at roughly two- to two-and-a-half-inch intervals from about 24 inches up to full height. Once the deck is on the lock, you can shut off power, unplug the pendant, and walk away for six months without the cylinders bleeding down under load.

What we tell every long-term-storage customer is to raise the lift, engage the locks, then release hydraulic pressure so the load sits on steel and not on oil. Cylinder seals last decades that way. He set his winter storage height at about 60 inches of pad — high enough to slide the winter beater under, low enough that opening the coupe’s door did not tag the garage-door track. If you are considering a scissor lift for automotive storage plus service, plan your winter and summer heights before install, because the walkway around the parked vehicle is different at each height.
