Why A Written Schedule Beats “We Look At It”
Every shop owner tells us they look at their lifts. We believe them. The problem is that looking at a scissor lift while a car is on it tells you almost nothing — the scissor stack is closed, the cylinder is under load, and the hydraulic lines are tucked inside the frame where you cannot see a weep. Real inspection happens with the lift empty, raised on its locks, and with a flashlight in your hand. That only happens if somebody wrote it on a calendar and assigned a name to it.
The other reason to put it in writing is documentation. ANSI/ALI standards call for an annual inspection by a qualified inspector, and your insurance carrier or a workers’ comp auditor may ask for records. We have walked into shops where a lift was tagged out because there was no proof of inspection, not because anything was actually wrong with it. A one-page log taped inside the electrical panel door — date, initials, what was checked — solves that. Daily: Thirty Seconds Before The First Car
Daily items are the ones your techs will actually do, so keep the list short and physical. First, walk the deck. Look for hydraulic fluid on the floor under the lift or pooled in the frame channel. A dime-sized spot is a seal or fitting talking to you; a puddle means stop using the lift. Second, check that the approach ramps, if you have them, are undamaged and seated. Third, cycle the lift once empty and listen. A scissor lift that groans on the way up, chatters at a specific height, or lifts unevenly is telling you a pivot bushing is dry or a cylinder is starting to bypass.
Fourth, and this is the one people skip: confirm the mechanical locks engage audibly on the way up and hold when you lower onto them. Never work under a scissor lift that is only holding on hydraulics. Fifth, look at the control station — frayed cord, cracked pendant, sticky button. On a mid-rise in a tire shop, that pendant gets stepped on and rolled over daily. We replace more damaged controls than we do power units. All five of these take under a minute combined, and they belong at the top of any scissor lift maintenance schedule you post on the wall.
Monthly: Grease, Torque, And Fluid Level
Monthly is where a scissor lift maintenance schedule earns its money, because this is when you touch the wear parts. Raise the lift, set it on locks, and hit the pivot points with grease. Scissor lifts live and die on their pins and bushings — that geometry puts enormous side load on a handful of pivots, and a dry pin will egg out the bushing bore, which introduces slop, which makes the lift rack and bind. Grease is a few dollars. Replacing a scissor arm is not.
While you are under it, check hydraulic fluid level with the lift fully lowered, not raised. Low fluid causes cavitation, which cooks the pump and aerates the oil until the lift feels spongy. Look at the fluid color too — milky means water intrusion, dark and burnt means heat. Then torque-check the anchor bolts on surface-mounted units and the frame fasteners on portable mid-rises. Iowa shops go through real freeze-thaw cycles, and concrete moves. We have re-shimmed plenty of anchors that were dead tight at install and loose eighteen months later. Wipe the cylinder rods clean while you are down there; grit riding into a seal is the most common cause of the slow drift-down we get called about.
Quarterly: Hoses, Cables, And Synchronization
Every three months, go deeper. Trace every hydraulic hose from the power unit to the cylinders and flex each one by hand. Look for cracking near the crimped ends, chafe marks where a hose rubs the frame, and any swelling. A hose that looks fine sitting still can split under 2,500 PSI. On lifts that use equalizer cables or chains to keep the two platforms level, check tension and inspect for broken strands, kinks, or rust bleeding out of the cable. One frayed strand means order a set — cables get replaced in pairs, never singly.
Quarterly is also the right interval for a synchronization check on dual-platform units. Run the lift to full height with nothing on it and measure both platforms off the floor. More than about a quarter inch of difference and something needs adjusting before it becomes a load-shift problem. Test the safety lock release under load and make sure both sides drop together. Finally, blow out the power unit’s cooling fins and check the motor mounts. Shop dust plus a hot motor equals a short pump life, and a power unit is one of the more expensive line items on any scissor lift. Annual: The ALI Inspection And Fluid Service
Once a year, the lift gets a full inspection by someone qualified to do it — that means an ALI Certified Lift Inspector, not the tech who happens to be free that afternoon. We perform these across central Iowa, and it is a genuinely thorough process: load test, structural inspection of welds and arms, measurement of pin and bushing wear, verification of every safety device, checking that the labels and capacity placards are legible, and a written report you keep on file. If something fails, we tell you what it costs to fix before you decide.
Annual service is also the window for a hydraulic fluid change on a heavily used lift, or every two years on light-duty use. Fluid does not last forever — it picks up moisture, breaks down under heat, and carries metal fines from normal wear. Drain it, replace the filter or suction screen if the unit has one, and refill with the manufacturer’s specified fluid. Do not mix types. We also use the annual visit to touch up rust on the platforms, replace faded warning decals, and swap any rubber pads or contact blocks that have gone hard. Adjusting The Schedule For How Hard You Run It
The intervals above assume a normal independent shop — one to two dozen cars a day, indoor, heated. Real conditions vary a lot, and your scissor lift maintenance schedule should flex with them. A tire shop running a mid-rise up and down forty times a day is putting five times the cycle count on the pivots and cylinder seals as a general repair bay, and those pivots want grease every couple of weeks, not monthly. A quick-lube operation with constant traffic is somewhere in between.
Environment matters as much as volume. If your lift lives near an open bay door in an unheated building, you are dealing with road salt, condensation on cold steel, and cold hydraulic fluid that is thick as syrup at startup. Salt attacks cable ends and anchor bolts; condensation gets into the reservoir. Those shops should shorten the quarterly items to monthly through winter. Same goes for a scissor lift in a wash bay or anywhere it gets sprayed. On the other end, a home-garage lift used a dozen times a year still needs an annual inspection and a fluid check — infrequent use lets seals dry out and lets moisture settle.
