Myth 1: You Cannot Do Real Alignment Work On A Scissor

A properly specified scissor lift with integrated turntable pockets and rear slip plates is capable of full four-wheel alignment on the majority of passenger EVs and light trucks we see roll into central Iowa shops. The catch is that not every scissor deserves that job. Low-rise pad-style units without a runway simply cannot host turntables, and asymmetric portable pad lifts leave the front wheels unsupported for a caster sweep.
What you actually need is an alignment-rated open-front scissor with a flush runway, integrated turntable cutouts at spec, and a rear slip plate pocket. Myth 2: EV Weight Is Not A Real Concern
EVs are heavy. A dual-motor crossover routinely tips the scales at 5,500 to 6,200 pounds, and a full-size electric pickup lives in the 8,000 to 9,500 pound band with a passenger and a full pack. If you are running a scissor lift / portable unit rated at 6,000 pounds because that is what your ICE alignment history said you needed, you will find its ceiling faster than you want to admit. We recommend a minimum of 9,000 pounds for a mixed EV alignment bay, and 12,000 pounds if a Lightning, R1T, or Silverado EV is even a monthly guest.
Capacity is not just about the sticker. It is also about where the load lands. Battery packs concentrate mass low and centered, which is friendly to scissor geometry, but a heavy front motor and dense front bumper on a pickup pushes weight forward of the front pivots. On short-runway portable scissors that changes the effective safety factor. We size the lift to the vehicle mix, not the average, and we always leave a 20 percent margin. It is cheaper to buy the right lift once than to buy the wrong one twice.
Floor Prep: Myth Vs Reality
The prevailing myth is that a scissor lift / portable unit needs no floor prep because it sits on the concrete. That is technically true for the lowest tier of stubby pad lifts, and misleading for anything you would actually want in an alignment bay. Any scissor with a runway long enough to host turntables imposes real point loads at the base frame, and those loads need honest four-inch minimum concrete with proper compressive strength. We have seen shops crack six inches of old low-strength slab under a 12,000 lb scissor because the pour was contractor-grade from 1978.
The right way to prep is to core a sample before we deliver. We coordinate that step during the site survey so the shop is not surprised on install day. A scissor that sits on a slab with a half-inch dip across the runway will read four-wheel alignment numbers that shift depending on ride height, and no software correction fixes physics.
Turntables And Slip Plates: Placement Matters More Than Brand
An alignment-ready scissor lift / portable unit is defined by the geometry of its turntable pockets and slip plates, not by what logo is on the power unit. The turntable center needs to sit under the front hub of the shortest and longest wheelbase vehicle in your regular mix. That sounds obvious until you realize a Tesla Model 3 and a Silverado EV have wheelbases nearly two feet apart, and if the pocket is fixed you will always be compromising. Look for adjustable pocket positioning or, better, a runway with a full-length pocket track.
The rear slip plates matter almost as much. If they are too short, a long-wheelbase truck runs off the plate and reads false thrust angle. If they lock too aggressively, a light EV never breaks the plate loose and reads phantom toe. We spec rear pockets rated for the truck end of the shop’s vehicle mix, then test with a Tesla Model Y on install day to confirm the plates float freely. Bay Depth And Cable Routing For A Portable Setup
One of the underrated advantages of a scissor lift / portable configuration is that you can move it. That advantage disappears if you have hardwired the power unit to a fixed conduit on the back wall. When we install a portable-friendly scissor for a border-region EV shop, we route the hydraulic and electrical lines with fast-disconnect couplers and a coiled service loop so the lift can be rolled to a different bay in an afternoon. That flexibility is what makes a portable scissor pay for itself in a shop that also does storage and detail work.
Bay depth planning is the other quiet mistake. Alignment work needs an aligner tower or wireless camera pod, and both want a specific relationship to the front turntables. If the bay is too shallow, the tower blocks the rollup door. If it is too deep, the technician is walking twice as far per adjustment. We measure the intended bay before we quote, mark the floor with painter’s tape for a full walk-through, and adjust before a bolt is set. Portable does not mean unplanned. It means planned to move.
When A Permanent Lift Still Wins
We are honest about this: a scissor lift / portable unit is not the right answer for every shop. If you run heavy-duty pickup alignments back-to-back, if you have a dedicated dyno-and-align bay that never changes purpose, or if you need underbody clearance beyond what any scissor delivers, a permanent open-front two-post or drive-on alignment rack will out-earn the portable option. The portable format shines where the bay must serve multiple jobs, where the shop rearranges twice a year, or where a landlord will not permit anchor bolts.
The other case where a permanent lift wins is high-volume commercial fleet alignment.
