Either way, the fix is the same: a proper rebuild kit with the correct wiper seal, rod seal, and O-ring set for your specific cylinder bore size. A second sign is visible fluid weeping at the base of the cylinder or pooling under the unit after it’s been sitting overnight.

A third sign, more specific to a scissor lift / portable setup, is uneven lowering — one side of the scissor pair drops faster than the other because the seals on that cylinder have worn more than its partner. This is common in shops where techs favor one unit for heavier trucks and let the other handle lighter cars, creating uneven wear over a few years. We recommend rotating which unit handles the heavier work if you can, and inspecting both cylinders annually so you catch a failing seal before it strands a vehicle mid-alignment.

Rebuild Kit vs Full Cylinder Replacement

Once a customer decides they need service, the next question is whether to rebuild the existing cylinder or replace it outright. In most cases a rebuild kit is the right call — the cylinder housing itself rarely wears out, it’s the seals and sometimes the rod surface that fail. A rebuild kit runs a fraction of the cost of a new cylinder and, done correctly with clean hydraulic fluid and a properly honed bore, will get you several more years of service.

Full replacement makes sense when the cylinder bore is scored or pitted from years of contaminated fluid, or when the rod itself is bent from an overload event. We see this more on portable units that have been dropped or knocked during a move than on fixed installations.
